Am I a horrible person to be kind of happy about this?

We got evicted in March.

Our LL was the worst we've ever had. She told us she wanted more money which is fine it's her house.. but she didn't fix a single thing in the time we were there. Apart from when the back door seized up and wouldn't open so she sent a locksmith round and asked if they could possibly leave the lock out because it cost less to fix. So she wanted to leave us without a locking door. The locksmith said no thank god. She also didn't provide any smoke alarms or carbon monoxide alarms when we moved in despite having a working wood burning stove and solid fuel aga so I had to provide those. When we moved out I took the carbon monoxide alarms with us because they cost a fair amount and I bought them! She actually had the audacity to try and charge us for taking them away with us because ' it's unsafe' well no shit Sherlock that's why I bought them!! She also just randomly turned up and let herself in as and when she wanted until we changed the locks and had a go at us for not giving her a key, but after she let the dog out to play in the traffic we couldn't risk it.

Anyway! It's still on Rightmove to let, it's just been decreased from 1200 to 850 which is what we paid. It's not really worth 850 but it's her house. Then when I walk past and see the garden all overgrown and weedy it just makes me laugh, it's a small village and she doesn't live here.

The tenants that were there before us were in the pub the other day talking to someone who mentioned that they had viewed it and they just destroyed the LL, admittedly they had a worse time of it than we did but it was quite funny listening. It's been on the market for 5 months because she put it on there before we moved out. Very luckily we managed to buy a house in the village in that time.

I used to be a LL and she is breaking the law by not having smoke alarms and C02 sensors.

Awful.

pandafunfactory · 17/07/2020 07:28

So she evicted you to get new tenants on a higher rent but hasn't actually been able to get any? So she's lost income from MArch to now?
You're right, that is pretty funny. Serves the grasping madam right. Bird in the hand and all that.

hatesomethinchangesomethin · 17/07/2020 07:35

@pandafunfactory yes that's correct. And the house is in the middle of the village and every single person who goes to the village shop can see how badly maintained it is because the garden is insane now

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/07/2020 07:36

Your LL is the horrible one, not you. It sounds as if several months of no rent coming in is the very least she deserves. Failing to provide smoke/CM alarms is surely against the law now!

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 17/07/2020 07:36

I’m a LL and my toes are curling with shame and embarrassment. Not to mention the illegal stuff of no CO2 monitors, charges for HW boilers etc.
Hiking up the rent. Urgh.

Some of us treat our rental properties as if we were living in them ourselves. In fact, I think it has more certifications than my actual home!

LLs are now bound by so much red tape, I’m surprised this stuff is still happening.

Thedogscollar · 17/07/2020 07:40

You are definitely not horrible OP. Karma at work. She sounds horrendous.

IloveJKRowling · 17/07/2020 07:53

It's not gossiping to warn someone of bad experiences they've had with a LL. Or indeed any organisation that's provided a shoddy service. This woman made a conscious choice not to keep a property safe.

It's actually a public service to be telling potential tenants about how illegally she behaves. No-one should have to rent in unsafe conditions, it is shameful that in this country this happens so regularly and it is so difficult for tenants to do anything about it. She should be barred from being a landlord.

I agree and I used to be a LL! How on earth is it "gossiping" to tell someone about what actually happened to you- she broke the bloody law. FGS, Ive never heard anything more ridiculous.

I’ve had one of theses LLs! I put a whole new boiler and heating system in (with a grant) and she tried putting my rent up. The toilet never flushed properly- they put a chisel behind the system - it was still there when I moved out 12 years later, and the toilet never flushed properly throughout the 12 years !
The sliding wardrobe door fell off and they said they’d put curtains in place of it.
Had the boiler serviced twice in 12 years (legally it needs to be every year).
They did absolutely nothing Maintenace wise even though I paid by dd, on time, every month.
Then they decided they were selling and I could have first refusal - errr, no thanks Confused. I moved to a lovely new build and they still haven’t sold it and now have lots of different tenants coming and going, and the garden is a mess 😒

YgritteSnow · 17/07/2020 08:00

It always fascinates me how some MNetters never fail to seize the opportunity to dish out a telling off to the the OP. No no matter how justified the OP is in whatever they're posting about they can always find a way to have a dig at them.

joyjester · 17/07/2020 08:05

Well you are right to be glad. that house is unsafe and illegal, so I am glad no one has moved in.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/07/2020 08:05

She sounds awful but yabu to delight in another's misfortune

Ignore this!

YANBU!

This would give me a warm rosy glow if I were in your shoes. I wouldn't wish ill on anyone, but if the universe comes back on them and bites them in the bum when they've done something nasty, I allow myself a little frisson of satisfaction!

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 17/07/2020 08:17

It is not gossiping, it is “providing a reference”.

But even if it was gossiping, and it was the OP who was doing the talking, not the previous tenant. She can gossip as she wishes, it is not her job to cover for and hide the misdemeanours of an irresponsible LL.

Coronabegone · 17/07/2020 08:19

You see what angers me is this....

As a tenant you need references, if you have bad references you won't get a new place.

If your a LL, no references needed, bad LL and no consequence.

The system needs changing.

It happens with employers and employees also.

@betteliefsen just tell me what misfortune the LL suffered, I've not read any on this post?

RaisinGhost · 17/07/2020 08:24

Ha ha, oh god she sounds horrible. She hasn't even really suffered that much misfortune (unfortunately). Misfortune would be if the roof caved in or something. A house being empty for a few months is just part of being a landlord really, she might even have insurance for it. And having an overgrown garden because you haven't bothered with it also isn't misfortune.

mrsBtheparker · 17/07/2020 08:28

Don't you just love the bleeding-hearts! Of course they are not unreasonable, I would make sure that the whole pub knows what she's like then it'll get round the village.

It's akin to being cut up driving by a boy-racer then seeing him a few miles down the road, stopped by the law! Not sexist by the way, simply my experience

ShebaShimmyShake · 17/07/2020 08:30

If I were in your shoes OP, I'd be delighted.

NoProblem123 · 17/07/2020 08:35

Corona- what a great idea ! References from Employers. Written by staff, love it 😊

AnyFucker · 17/07/2020 08:42

Yanbu. She gives decent landlords a bad name. All karma to her.

Coronabegone · 17/07/2020 08:42

Sone employers are shocking @NoProblem123 and deserve being outed!

SmilesAreFree2020 · 17/07/2020 08:43

@hatesomethinchangesomethin

She sounds awful. You should have reported her unsafe practices. Sadly someone might die in future in her unsafe property.

Hopefully it will stay empty for a while. Spread the news around the village about the facts - unsafe, smoke alarms, wandering in when she felt like it and it might put off prospective tenants.

Enjoy your new home

Yup it’s kind of hilarious. Eg “I just helped up an elderly lady who fell whilst crossing the road”- there’s always one: “omg how patronising of you, maybe her hobby is lying in roads and you just prevented her achieving the only thing that gave her happiness. Shame on you! Also you are being ageist- I hope you’re pleased with your awful behaviour”

😆

ZombieLizzieBennet · 17/07/2020 08:44

Not in the slightest. However, you're about to get some yoga level reaching from people who want to tell you YABU, so buckle up for that.

Coronabegone · 17/07/2020 08:46

@NoProblem123 I gave up a job I'd been in 15 years for one closer to home, it would give me more time blah blah! I had less time, you were questioned if you dared to consider going home on time, the work load was outrageous and never any appreciation. It was 14 months of hell and the bs k office system with a string of names a mile long who no longer worked there was proof that they were awful employers.

In fact the recruitment agency I was with stopped working with them. It was giving them a bad name.
