Work as a publicity/press manager. I'm on the on call out of hours rota for tonight, don't have a problem with that. But since the office has closed at 5:30 I've had 9 calls with "urgent media enquiries", aibu to think this is going to more like a night shift than an on call shift?

We’re the media enquires actually urgent?

JudithGrimesHat · 16/07/2020 20:32

*were

This sounds like a role where responses may be time critical if you have to respond to/ comment on a relevant news item. Were the inquiries urgent or could they have been left until the next day?

Thehop · 16/07/2020 20:35

Just respond “that’s not urgent please call the office tomorrow”

Happyforeveriknow · 16/07/2020 20:36

@VimFuego101 @JudithGrimesHat

Four of them were not urgent.
I'm just thinking it's more like a night shift as I can imagine my phone just ringing all night now.

It's not usually like this, usually only 1 or two per night.

@Thehop

That's what I've had to do for 2, well didn't say to call the office, just gave them the press office email and told them to email it in and it will get picked up in the morning by the publicity team.

Some people in our industry don't have jobs now after COVID-19.

You've given no indication of whether the "urgent media enquiries" are actually urgent, and there's a crisis that merits lots of media contact (don't tell me, it's probably "outing".

No, instead it's just a complaint about having to actually respond when on call.

Some folk make me wonder sometimes about the modern PR industry. Used to be a nerdy passion for some, now people just want to respond to Twitter inquiries with a stock boilerplate Hmm

OK just read this.

Other industries are available, please see Monster etc.

Can't a message be put on the out of hours line "if you have an equiry or item which is non urgent, please hang up and email [email protected] and your enquiry will be responded to tomorrow. If you have an urgent requirement, please stay on the line"

Happyforeveriknow · 16/07/2020 20:44

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

We use our mobile for on call and I don't know how to put something like that on my mobile.

I knows it's my job and I wouldn't mind if all of the enquiries were actually urgent. Its the having the phone ring in the middle of the night, waking you up and answering it and finding out it's far from urgent that pisses me off.

OP posts:
CallMeOnMyCell · 16/07/2020 20:47

If you’re on call then you’re on call... not sure what you’re complaining about?

GinDaddyRedux · 16/07/2020 20:48

@Happyforeveriknow

Apologies if I came across a bit harsh but seen a lot of job losses, friends of mine go under so to speak.

Happyforeveriknow · 16/07/2020 20:49

@CallMeOnMyCell

I don't mind being on call, it's the being woken up by the non urgent calls that pisses me off.

GinDaddyRedux · 16/07/2020 20:55

OK more constructive (hopefully) from me:

I'm admittedly old school but is there an opportunity here to educate the journalists on what is urgent etc, build a relationship with them and say "I'll get someone to give you something on X that can make your deadline" etc? Or tell your boss about it and say "hang on, what relationships do we have with people where everyone calls the out of hours line instead of developing their stories through normal channels?"

I know it doesn't solve the problem of your phone ringing, but I for one would appreciate someone feeding back to me that this is the culture.

Happyforeveriknow · 16/07/2020 20:56

Just had another bloody non urgent call then while trying to put my DC to bed, its honestly pissing me off tonight.

Justjoshin22 · 16/07/2020 21:04

It does sound like a particularly high number of calls... what sector do you work in? Are you agency / in house?

Thehop · 16/07/2020 21:05

The non urgent would piss me off too x

ShebaShimmyShake · 16/07/2020 21:06

Are you in an organisation that would expect so many out of hours media calls?

Xiaoxiong · 16/07/2020 21:12

You must be in an industry which requires round the clock media availability. Nowhere I've ever worked has needed such a thing, so the very fact that you even have an out of hours rota seems to indicate that it's necessary. And it sounds like 5 of the 9 calls were actually urgent and necessary so thank goodness you were on call!

I think you'll have to live and learn, next time you are on call out of hours make sure you have cover for the kids as you would during the work day. (Sod's law you get very few calls next time).

Hope your next out of hours slot on the rota isn't for a while!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/07/2020 21:16

But it's not the middle of the night.

CoRhona · 16/07/2020 21:16

Do you work for Brad Pascale? Wink
