To think visiting a zoo can make you unwell?

Stay with me, I appreciate it might sound a bit bonkers.

Last time I went to the zoo in 2017 I came down with a virus the day after and was laid up for a week.

I visited the same zoo this week and as per last time, I'm coming down with a similar thing now.

Is it coincidence?

I'm as sure as can be that it's not covid. I don't have any of those symptoms.

@MrsSSG

Sore throat and lethargy are symptoms of Covid. Please do a test, you may have to isolate.
On both occasions it sounds like you are bringing the sickness to the zoo...
Keepdistance · 16/07/2020 21:07

Do you eat the food there?

I wouldnt rule out covid if you went by tube somewhere busy. Was any of it indoors?

My allergies come up very quickly but food ones can be delayed.
Covid can be 1-14+ days.
Even using a public toilet can spread it

Yes OP Everyone can get a test now - you should probably read up on latest info tbh.

NameChange84 · 16/07/2020 21:16

I rarely go the the Zoo. Once every three years. Every time I come back I feel as you say;

Swollen Glands
Heavy eyelids
Scratchy throat/eyes/nose
Extremely tired
Achy/shivery
Foggy Head
Sometimes my nose starts to run
I often have to go straight to bed

I didn’t realise it was related until I had to go the the zoo several times in a year (every 6/8 weeks).

I’m sure it’s allergy related. I’m allergic to lots of things! Myself and one of my parents get really ill when we visit Sarasota (randomly). If we get an allergy shot otc out there we are instantly better. Again, we just thought we were coming down with something the first time we stayed there (for a week) but we even get it when we go there on day trips. Within a few hours we feel achy, lethargic, scratchy throats, streaming eyes, heavy head etc Every. Single. Time.

Some environments just aren’t great for people. Looks like the Zoo could be like this for you.

Hiddennameforever · 16/07/2020 21:18

I read somewhere that a woman caught a serious virus in zoo.
I think it was with the around rhinos or similar large animals.
I am not sure whether it was someone wrote this on FB in one of my groups I’m in..but it did shocked me.
It was like some kind of rare tropical disease.

I've just tried to order a test from gov website and I'm unable to because they can't verify my details. They verify your name and address via something called trade union and my details aren't working.

I often have trouble with post as my address doesn't come up on the royal mail directory so maybe that's why?

Either way it's not working. The nearest walk-through site is 7 miles away and I wouldn't be able to get to it without using public transport which is a no no if there's any chance of covid.

Looks like I'll have to go without :/

  • not trade union but trade something.

It's a way they verify who you are and they can't verify me for some reason.

TransUnion Grin

I've no other way of getting a test unfortunately. Looks like I might have to isolate just incase.

There was another thread with this identity failure. There is a number on the site to call if it can't identify you. They will then order you one over the phone.

Thank you alen I will have a look for the number

OP posts:
RichardMarxisinnocent · 16/07/2020 21:33

You can arrange a test by phone, I think the number to call is 119

Utini · 16/07/2020 21:34

@TheHighestSardine 5-10 days incubation period for anything "coldy" is incorrect.

Colds and flu typically have an incubation period of 2 days:

HowFastIsTooFast · 16/07/2020 21:39

I'd say it's probably a coincidence OP. We're members of our local zoo and go all the time, no ill effects ever that I can think of 🤔

Yellowc · 16/07/2020 21:44

I found the number (thank you for that) and spoke to a lovely lady who has ordered me a test which will be with me within 48 hours.

Fingers crossed for a negative result, I will isolate in the mean time just incase.

@NameChange84 that's very interesting to read, pretty much exactly like me!

I thought people would think I'm bonkers when I posted, it's reassuring to know I'm not the only person this has happened to.

The more I think about it the more an allergy makes sense!

OP posts:
Sportsnight · 16/07/2020 22:13

You’ve been on the tube and you’re blaming the zoo?!

Yellowc · 16/07/2020 22:33

@Sportsnight

You’ve been on the tube and you’re blaming the zoo?!
I was wearing a face mask on the tube.

I only questioned whether it was the zoo because the same thing happened last time I went, long before coronavirus.

I went to leon in france and had a horrific allergic reaction literally could not stop sneezing. Probably hayfever.

Glad yiu got the test sorted.

TheHighestSardine · 16/07/2020 23:24

Thanks @Utini! That's very interesting, dunno where I got mine from.

Yellowc · 17/07/2020 09:17

Well I've pretty much ruled out allergy, I took antihistamines last night and this morning to no avail.

I feel worse now than I did yesterday. It feels very fluey/a bit like glandular fever which I've had once before. My test will be here tomorrow as confirmed by email so I've let my immediate family know to stay away until I get my results.

DH brought the DSC here yesterday though despite me telling him the night before I was coming down unwell so he'll have to have an uncomfortable conversation with their DM.

OP posts:
Keepdistance · 18/07/2020 19:13

Oh dear. A few covid people have had what seemed like a reactivation of glandular fever.

Yellowc · 19/07/2020 08:04

My test arrived yesterday eve but the email instructions say not to do the test or post on a Sunday so I have to wait until tomorrow now.

I'm not feeling as bad today it's gone from feeling like GF to just a cold. I'm isolating just to be on the safe side.
