Trying to find a buggy for 6 year old

I'm trying to find a double buggy for my 2 year old and 6 year old -

I know he's too old normally but it's just for a holiday where we will be travelling by train a lot in the night and I want somewhere for both kids to be able to sleep.

Any recommendations please? Thanks!

Phil and Teds Dash Inline Double.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 16/07/2020 13:24

if you are travelling by train will he not have a seat to sleep on? I think it would be harder to get a double buggy onto a train than a single one.
try having a look for a second hand one on facebook marketplace, the Kato 2 stroller might suit if you can find one.
All the best x

Following this thread with interest. I have a 6 year old and a 7 year old who both have global development delay. The 6 year old is a bolter with no sense of danger and the 7 year old falls over all the time. The only double buggy I could find cost more than my car. So now I have just resigned myself to not going out unless they are at school or if dh is with us.

Sandytoes86 · 16/07/2020 13:37

Depends if you want a side by side or tandem, if your on trains and travelling I’d probably recommend a Phil and teds sport but neither seat lies flat . It has good wheels and is easy to fit through small spaces and on rough terrain . If your happy with a side by side the baby jogger city mini double is a good one to push and has seats that lie comfortably flat and a nice enclosed space for the children to sleep .

How tall are they ? My DS went in our out n about nipper ( can get a double version) at the weekend. He's 4 but quite tall at 110cm high he had about 2cm clearance of the hood ( it was very sunny trip out ). I know the weigh limit is high on those and it was easy to push as he's 20kg !

I hope it's not GWR as not a lot of pushchair space at all on there.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 16/07/2020 15:39

@elliejjtiny Could you try getting a single seat stroller for your 7 year old, and then using child reins for your 6 year old? (like these which are adjustable). It might work out cheaper x

concernedforthefuture · 16/07/2020 17:39

Mountain Buggy Duo is a good size (they're discontinued now so search gumtree etc. - the newer Duet model has smaller seats).

That said, unless he's very small for his age, I think he'll find it quite uncomfortable trying to sleep in any pushchair at 6. His legs would just be too long and his body too tall to fit along the reclined seat back. Sitting in a pushchair he would be fine but not lying down.

Boomclaps · 16/07/2020 17:43

Out n about nipper

1Number · 21/07/2020 22:56

6 year old is really tall, his dad is 6 foot 3 so you can imagine.
We're travelling in Europe so I have no idea what the trains are like for pushchairs.
We have a pram that I can add a second seat to (icandy) but he's huge in the seat now let alone in 6 months time.
I just want him to be able to sleep comfortably if we do a lot a night travel.

If you have a 6 year old, they sleep in beds. If you're on a train and want to sleep through the night, it's done on a bed in a sleeper carriage.

You can't possibly expect, or think it's healthy, for a child to spend a night sleeping in a buggy?

ECBC · 21/07/2020 23:02

This doesn’t sound ideal :/ are there no sleeper options?

Mammyloveswine · 21/07/2020 23:27

I wouldn't want to be travelling a lot at night with a 2 and 6 year old! Will you not be on sleeper trains? It'll be a pain carting a big double pushchair along with all your stuff!

Haenow · 21/07/2020 23:30

Sorry to say I think you’re being totally unrealistic expecting to push a sleeping 2 year old and 6 year old. It’ll be too uncomfortable for them to sleep in. Sorry!

Embracelife · 21/07/2020 23:35

@elliejjtinyyou can get connectors for mavkaren major buggies. You might be able to ask wheelchair services or OT .

Embracelife · 21/07/2020 23:37

op your kids can curl up on train seats to sleep
Bring blow up pillows for them and blankets.
There won't be room for opened buggies on the train you will be asked to fold them .

MoreCookiesPlease · 21/07/2020 23:45

Why/how would you expect your 6 year old to sleep in a buggy overnight? He would have his own seat/bed in an overnight sleeper train. Or just plan your trip to not be travelling overnight to avoid this

xyzandabc · 21/07/2020 23:46

Is there a reason you have to do a lot of overnight train journeys with young children? Doesn't sound like a great holiday. At 6 they'd probably be more comfy in their own train seat with their head on your lap. But then you won't get any sleep.

Though I guess if you were planning on them both sleeping in a buggy then one of you would need to stay awake anyway incase one of them woke up or someone tried to push them away.

Yawwwwwwwn · 21/07/2020 23:52

You can get special needs buggies and they do them for older, heavier children as well. Have a look.

I once borrowed a friends single disabled children's buggy and it was brilliant.

ShyTown · 21/07/2020 23:55

I’ve done train journeys in a couple of European countries and typically you fold the stroller and leave it on the luggage racks by the doors as it won’t fit down the aisle and there’s nowhere near your seats to even put it. If you did find something suitable which probably something designed for SEN children if it can safely take the weight of a tall 6YO, and your children did sleep in it then you’d probably find yourself standing up all night by the doors. I think it’s a bit of a bonkers idea when you could just take a blanket and pillow and they could sleep in their seat, which may even recline depending on the type of train. If you think about it it’s not much different to a night flight on a plane. You could also look into whether a sleeper service is an option on your route.

LittleBearPad · 21/07/2020 23:58

They’ll sleep on the seats, surely.

Bridecilla · 22/07/2020 00:00

I agree with previous posters. A 2 year old is portable and can sleep anywhere. A 6 year old would be miserable. Genuinely doubt you'll get an unfolded single buggy on the train never mind a double

Goingdownto · 22/07/2020 00:03

None of you will sleep comfortably if you do a lot of night travel! Get a bunk? Or travel in the day.
(Are you spies?)

user327253 · 22/07/2020 00:05

My 6 year old fits easily in her younger siblings City Mini GT, and they do a double version. AFAIK the Phil and Ted and the City Mini have the biggest seat units out of all prams. City Mini is great for travel as it has a pull strap in the seat to fold it in seconds, so you can easily fold it on a platform and pop it up again on the carriage. I have no idea what kind of train you are talking about though and if you'd have room to pop it up.
