Return to school date

BringBiscuits · 16/07/2020 13:10

My dd school has just confirmed the return to school date. As previous years y8 go back last. Monday 7 September is training day, tues 8 is for new starters, Wednesday 9 for everyone but y8. She will finally return on Thursday 10 September after 25weeks out of school. She will have been out of school longer than she was in it!
AIBU that they could have brought this forward this year after all the missed weeks? She isn’t settled in and dreads going back. I think it would be better to treat y8 with similar treatment to y7 so bring them back as soon as possible not at the end of the week when everyone is in.
Would you mention it to the school given that it won’t change anything? Or AIBU?

@BringBiscuits

Pandemic? Sorry mabel must have missed that. 🙄

I’m clearly in the minority here. That’s the point of this thread right to see if you are being unreasonable? One day someone will say yes I see your point of view, appreciate it’s frustrating, what a shame etc. but sorry you are being unreasonable. Instead it’s snarky comments.

I see your point of view, but YABU. Ignore any snarky comments on here.

Poor ds year 7 goes back first day in September!! Year 7 have all the ground floor and year 11 the top floor. Assume no school bus as nothing mentioned as yet.

BarbedBloom · 16/07/2020 15:32

I would say a gentle YABU. I totally get why you are upset but the training day will be really important this time. Plus for the new starts it is going to be intimidating enough, plus all the new changes on top so the fewer people around, the better.

Sunnydayshereatlast · 16/07/2020 16:40

I really am not bothered tbh. Some dc won't be going back at all - kind of keeps you focused...

my2bundles · 16/07/2020 17:43

Exactly sunny. OP you need to be realistic in your expectations, schools are planning under very strange circumstances and guidance which could change again. Start dates could change again before September and we need to face the very real possibility of bubbles, or whole schools being sent home due to outbreaks. Start dates are really insignificant given the circumstances

Mumtumwobble · 16/07/2020 17:56

My school are bringing back one year group at a time (daily) so they can get used to the new procedures etc. and we can help anxious pupils properly before the next one arrives. If all 700 came back in on the same day it would be carnage. School are doing this to try and keep everyone as safe and calm as possible not to piss off parents. Unfortunately year 8 are likely to be last in most schools because they’re not new and they’re the furthest from GCSEs. I don’t think a couple of days is going to make much difference in the grand scheme of things.

Mumtumwobble · 16/07/2020 18:00

Also school start dates are set 2 years in advance so people can book holidays. You can’t just change them. Inset days are vital so that staff are properly prepared to receive the pupils. It not just a bit of ‘training’. There are going to be a lot of changes for us too and I’m sure you want us to know what we’re doing so that we can keep your dd safe.

FrippEnos · 16/07/2020 18:04

BringBiscuits
postpone the training day is exactly what my sons school is doing

This is what you should be getting your panties in a bunch about.
There is so much wrong with postponing the first day of inset.

KangarooIsland · 16/07/2020 18:09

DS starts Reception this year and they are staggering starts - an hour here, an hour there, half days etc etc. He eventually starts full time the first week of October! I understand they need to ease the children in, but October is ridiculous.

KangarooIsland · 16/07/2020 18:11

Sorry OP, didn’t mean to post then - just to say YANBU but at least it’s only a few days so it shouldn’t make too much of a difference in the long run.

Feellikedancingyeah · 16/07/2020 18:35

@Sunnydayshereatlast how ?

2155User · 16/07/2020 19:21

And you think 2 days is going to make a difference?

How can you get so worked up about 48 hours

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 16/07/2020 19:29

At least you’ve been given a start date. Our secondary school are apparently going to do a “staggered opening”. Goodness knows when.

We’ve had a letter talking about how each year group will start and finish at different times (and then all hang about together outside before getting on the same school bus). But no actual date ...

Marsay772 · 16/07/2020 19:37

My year 6 and year 7 are going back on the 1zt September and my FS2 is doing 2 days a week for 1st 2 weeks of September. I can't fault the schools, they have both done a fab job. Their teachers deserve a good break after eveything this school year.

TheCanyon · 16/07/2020 19:48

A lot of schools in Scotland are going back a week earlier, all starting on the same day.

SionnachRua · 16/07/2020 19:53

Eh no! New starters will have had no transition time and this new school year will be especially tricky for them. They need to be given time to adjust to new rules and building.

For everyone else a staggered return will be important in order to teach new expectations properly. The training day will also be very important - this is the start of a school year unlike any other and the staff will have a lot to take in. It's only a couple of days, I'd put up and shut up.

roseapothecary · 16/07/2020 19:58

My school and my DS school are back first week of September, do you have a 7 week summer holiday? I would agree with PP that the inset days at start of year are important especially this year with the changes

IndiaPlace · 16/07/2020 20:17

Under the terms of teachers pay and conditions, which have not changed during COVID teachers are contracted and paid for 190 days plus 5 training days. These can't just be disregarded.

Training is vital not just because of COVID but each year the new Keeping Children Safe in Education document is released by the government. All staff in schools MUST be trained and this must be signed off.

Aragog · 18/07/2020 22:10

Moving the first inset day is a silly idea.
We need that training day to get everyone's heads round the new rules and guidelines, and ensuring everything is set up before the children return.

If any year needs an inset day on day one it's this year!

Dd2 year group goes back a whole week after new starters. Normally a day.
