My husband gave my five year old off milk

Posting for traffic.
My husband gave my son cereal with milk that was in date, but clumpy and split. It doesn't smell, but I'm worried it's going to make him ill. What do you think?

If it was bad he would have spat it out. Off milk is disgusting. But it won't make him ill.

Mol1628 · 16/07/2020 07:17

He will be fine. Might just give him a bit of an upset stomach. Not much else you can do.

Duggeeismysaviour · 16/07/2020 07:17

It will probably be absolutely fine but in the kindest way, not much you can do now, so not sure what a load of AIBU responses will do to help. Carry on as normal with your morning and time will tell. Good luck!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 16/07/2020 07:17

I'm amazed he could stomach it if it was really off. It won't make him ill.

foamrolling · 16/07/2020 07:17

I accidentally gave my child a bottle of off milk she was 1. It was 5am so I was clearly half asleep and didn't clock it. She drank it all and then threw it all back up. She was fine after vomiting but I still feel guilty over a decade later!

PippinMeriadoc · 16/07/2020 07:18

Are you sure it wasn’t clumpy because it had frozen slightly?

BwanaMakubwa · 16/07/2020 07:19

Yoghurt is effectively off milk. He'll be fine.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 16/07/2020 07:30

DD did herself some cereal at 6 or 7 with off milk. She ate it all and was fine but complained afterwards "it tasted funny" and didn't eat or drink it again for a while.

Wither · 16/07/2020 07:33

Well he may well be ill, although if it tasted that bad he would have spat it out.

There’s really not much you can do about it, even if he is ill.

Aragog · 16/07/2020 07:58

Dh did this,to me by accident a while back now.

I actually did eat a fair bit though- breakfast in bed, tired and weary and it took a while to,work, out what was wrong.

I was pretty sick on and off all day but I suspect a lot of that was as I already don't really like milk ( I only have a bit disguised in tea and on flavoured cereals) and the thought of it all day.

If he ate it and didn't notice chances are he will be fine. His tummy might feel a bit off so maybe plain food for the rest of the day if that's the case.

dottiedodah · 16/07/2020 08:31

My Stepdad used to say that he preferred milk that was a day old as it had more taste! I am sure DS will be fine .Maybe tell DH to check for another time though?!

AltheaVestr1t · 16/07/2020 08:47

I did this by mistake when DS was small. He was fine!

mrsBtheparker · 16/07/2020 09:17

My late mother saved off milk to make scones, they were lovely, it's not bad for you it just doesn't taste good! He'll be fine.

Loveinatimeofcovid · 16/07/2020 09:18

Are you sure it was actually off and not unhomogonised or defrosted or something?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/07/2020 09:30

Worst thing it may do is put the child off milk for life.
Really off milk tastes vile.

psychomath · 16/07/2020 10:27

It can't be very off if it doesn't smell and he willingly ate it - I'm sure he'll be fine.

Thank you all for the replies x

Those of us who remember those horrid little bottles of free milk at break times at school in the 70s will have drunk an awful lot of questionable milk and we are still going strong!

thepeopleversuswork · 16/07/2020 14:00

It will be fine. Worst case scenario he will vomit it back up.

I'd be surprised if its properly off, tbh, probably off milk is undrinkable. If he was able to consume it it was probably just slightly on the turn. Milk can go a bit like that if its rich and is about to go off.

nicknamehelp · 16/07/2020 14:03

my dh did this once whilst I was away ds promptly projectile vomited all over our bed and was fine. DH learnt to check milk 1st!

IwishIhadaMargarita · 16/07/2020 14:08

It’s cottage cheese really. Although my friend was hungover and drank milk from the carton that was off and lumpy....it was everywhere she spat it out!

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 16/07/2020 14:12

Two of my kids drank off milk (I hadn't realised was off until they'd had some) before we started our journey home from holiday once. A few pukes along the motorway but they were fine otherwise. Smelt absolutely rank though.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 16/07/2020 14:14

I don’t think it will make him ill but it does sound disgusting!

Zaphodsotherhead · 16/07/2020 14:38

My milkman leaves my milk on the doorstep quite early in the morning. In the hot sunny weather. I'd quite often find that that would have 'split' a bit when I opened it up and used it in tea or coffee. It was still in date, wasn't off, but didn't keep as long.

Tasted fine. But my kids have got a thing about 'bobbly' milk being off and will pour it down the drain rather than use it.

I've never had a problem with it. If it tastes okay then milk is usually fine. If it tastes even slightly sour you can tell straight away.
