AIBU to ask what you dress baby in at night if room is 22 degrees

Got another thread about temperature worries but thought I'd ask outright
Ds is nearly seven months and the temp is his room.really seems to fluctuate at the moment with this weird.humid.weather
It was 21 when I put him to bed but is now 22.5 and will drop again in the early hours
He's been waking a lot recently and his legs and feet inside his grobag were cold plus he felt only slightly warm on chest and back by morning so I've got him in a one tog grobag and long sleeved vest, bare legs and feet.
He's fast asleep and seems happy enough and I've done a temp check to make sure he's not too hot

However all the guides say I've got him in too much and should be in a short sleeved vest? His hands and arms are like blocks of ice by morning if I do that and he wakes up more frequently

Just wondering what you put baby in around these temps?
I have a 0.5 tog but use that when it's 23 or above

With my 11mo i tend to just use a vest and sleep suit for this type of weather. Room temp is at 22. I always check temperature and she's always warm in the morning. She prefers being warm to being cold though. I think what he is in atm with the temperature is fine. As mine is a little older i sometimes leave a blanket in the cot in case it goes a bit cooler and she puts it over herself

Goosefoot · 16/07/2020 02:47

If he's sleeping through he's probably ok. Babies will generally wake if they are too hot or cold, which is annoying for you, but it won't hurt them. It's not likely to be so cool in the room in summer that you get hypothermia or anything like that. Hands or back being cool isn't all that significant, anyway, if the baby seems happy - check the crease between the neck and shoulder or the armpit. If they are cold, that is too cold. Otherwise you should be fine.

It is tricky when the weather is like this. I usually would go with something like a little shirt and diaper. I also used to put them to bed with no blanket and then when I went to bed, put a light sheet on. I realise they don't recommend blankets these days, but I think that's kind of dumb. No one wants to be cold and a hot baby will usually kick off the sheet, while they can't with a bag or clothes. Though socks might be worth a try - warmer feet can be nice even without much else on.

ChocolateCrunchies · 16/07/2020 02:48

Every child is different, Some feel the cold more, some get hot easily.

I would do a 1 tog bag and a long sleeve vest.... If he wakes and seems cold, you could maybe add a thin pair of trousers to the bag and long sleeve vest

ChocolateCrunchies · 16/07/2020 02:49

Cold babies wake

Hot babies tend to not wake if to hot

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 16/07/2020 04:51

I don't know if I've got it right as he keeps waking but I think he's going through a sleep regression, legs slamming etc so I don't think it's temperature related as he feels a good temp

Thanks for all the advice

Can't use blankets at the moment as he's a leg slammer so ends up pulling them all up and scooting about so he is in at weird angles

Go with your instincts, the gro bag ‘guidance’ in my experience results in chilly babies who wake a lot. They have to cover their arses though so I think it makes sense that their guidance is cautious.

You shouldn’t overheat a baby but it’s not a scientific thing - people managed for thousands of years without such precise instructions about what to wear at night.

I’d be bloody freezing with a 1 tog duvet and a short sleeved vest at night! Long sleeved vest sounds fine, or just no vest but a footless sleep suit.

Yeah. It's not like putting baby to bed in a greenhouse or something like that. There is a difference between overheating and being too warm in a room that's at a reasonable temperature.

Lolalovesmarmite · 16/07/2020 06:32

I think the guidance can be taken with a pinch of salt. Babies are all different. My 8 week old is a little furnace, he always feels really warm and is just in a sleep suit even though the room is about 18-19 degrees. If they’re cold they tend to wake up.

orangejuicer · 16/07/2020 06:37

At the moment DS (20mo) is in pyjamas and a 0.5 tog sleeping bag for 21-22c. It's difficult to get right sometimes but generally he's a good temp.

Camomila · 16/07/2020 07:28

I usually put 5m old DS2 to bed in a sleeveless vest, the t-shirt he's been wearing that day, and a summer grow bag. I don't measure the bedroom temperature unless its a boiling hot day though.

(He does get baths! Just in the morning)

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 16/07/2020 22:48

Thanks everyone I've switched it up tonight as it's slightly warmer so he's in a 0.5 tog bag, wraparound longsleeve vest and thin shorts and is sleeping happily (so far) at a comfortable temp so I'm hoping I've cracked it for him

OP posts:
Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 18/07/2020 22:31

just when I thought I'd cracked it...it gets even hotter Grin ah what fun

I found this super helpful: www.babycentre.co.uk/a25024140/what-should-my-baby-wear-at-night-infographic

My 14 month old is in a short sleeved vest and 1tog sleepbag tonight

Ineedcoffee2345 · 18/07/2020 23:11

Dd 7months is in 1 tog sleeping bag and Baby grow. She kept waking with cold arms and hates her feet being bare even under sleep bag

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 18/07/2020 23:25

I've got him in a long sleeved vest but with a very thin cellular blanket which will be kicked off shortly I imagine

PoodleMoth · 18/07/2020 23:41

My almost 2 year old is just in pyjamas (long sleeved but no vest). She has refused her sleeping bag this week so I put a blanket on but she just sleeps on top of it!

PoodleMoth · 18/07/2020 23:43

If she has been in her 1 tog sleeping bag she would have had a short sleeved vest and no pyjamas. I think she likes having her feet out like her dad!

2155User · 18/07/2020 23:58

Never followed all the temperature guidance, DS was always too cold.
Just like his father, he likes to be wrapped up.
So at 22 degrees we would use a short sleeved vest, long sleeved sleep suit and 2.5 sleeping bag

Misslees · 19/07/2020 01:34

At 22 degrees I would use a 1 tog bag and a long sleeved vest. I always think that my DD can't take her bag off or move it down, like we can with a duvet. So they should definitely not have too much as they just can't escape the heat. Nothing worse than lying too hot at night! They will wake and cry if cold and you can change the tog during night if the temp has dropped.

mummyh2016 · 19/07/2020 01:43

My DD is older but at 22 degrees at that age I'd have put her in a sleepsuit, no vest and 2.5 tog bag. Those groegg guides are ridiculous.

Leaannb · 19/07/2020 02:00

At that temp in Celsius my kids only wore diapers

NoMoreJunk · 19/07/2020 02:23

At 7 months old, i personally wouldn't chance a blanket, however thin

You could put him in Just thin pjs or just a vest, depending how hot it is

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 19/07/2020 07:28

I ended up swapping the blanket for a 0.5 tog bag and he slept soundly and was a nice temp

I'm slowly getting better at judging it!
