Not sure about the answers i'll get here, hoping to keep it mostly lighthearted but have been very interested reading about it.
AIBU to think Helen Kellers feats weren't too good to be true? She spoke 5 languages, could write in english, survived all sorts of things etc all while being blind and deaf and mute, which is incredible for a woman of her time period to do.
I wasn't too educated about her until DD told me about a theory of her going around on social media. People think that it was fake and that she wasn't blind/deaf etc at all Shock
Personally from what i'm reading I think that she was very extraordinary however i'm not too sure.
What are your thoughts? Confused

Well, social media is an entirely credible source, isn’t it!

It just seems to be a theory and to be honest it would make sense with what she did with her condition, but i'm not too sure.Confused

There are film clips of her available. Its obvious she is blind and she can not speak properly but can read lips with her hands and sign, and her companion can understand her speech and interpret.
With so much of her life on record I don't uunderstand why anyone would give credence to such theories? She was of the modern age, not some pre-historic figure. Her life was well documented and her books and films are there for all to enjoy.

Sounds very fascinating and a big accomplishment Smile

....yes, it was “a big accomplishment”. So why are you questioning it because you’ve heard second hand that a random on twitter has decided it’s not true.

I think the people who subscribe to this theory are the same sort of people who make snap judgements about disabilities in general. The same people who think ADHD is down to bad parenting or that someone couldn't possibly be autistic because they were smiling and chatting or that the person walking away from that car mustn't need a blue badge because they were walking.

These people see a person with a disability acting in a way that does not fit with their very narrow definition of what constitutes a "genuine disability" and so decide that the only possible explanation is that they are faking their disability or over exaggerating it.
