STAY BEHIND THE LINE!!

emmiemms · 15/07/2020 16:02

Was queuing up to pay in a shop today when the lady on the till shouted at me to stay behind the marked line. I was already behind it so stayed where I was. Customer in front paid for goods and so I began loading my items on. Again got shouted at to stay behind the line.

Customer left shop so I moved over the line and paid for items. Before I could pack my bag a member of staff came close behind me and said excuse me and squeezed past me. Leaving about 30cm between us.

Would I have been unreasonable to shout at her to stay behind the line?

The second time of being shouted at I would have left all my shopping and walked out

Milsplus3 · 15/07/2020 20:42

Staff are stressed don’t take it personally they have a job to do and many people are being difficult. I witnessed a lady running a small shop alone today with a queue of customers outside, one in one out rule, and people just pushing in ignoring her and not queuing correctly. She handled it well and had to raise her voice a few times, but I respect staff who are sticking to the rules. I’d let it go personally. Are you sure she was talking to you and it wasn’t a general statement or to someone behind you?

FrugiFan · 15/07/2020 21:06

Staff shouldnt be expected to shout "stay behind the line" at anyone. If the shop have make the marking clear enough they wouldnt have to. . She probably wasnt shouting at you, just sounded more annoyed because shes fed up with saying it a thousand times a day.

BlackPetunia · 15/07/2020 21:09

which shop?

emmiemms · 16/07/2020 09:10

I didn't like the fact she had to shout at me as i hate being Centre of attention and it made everyone look at me, I wasn't even over the bloody line. What annoyed me most was the fact the other staff member thought it was acceptable to come very close to me and no one said anything.

So customers cannot go within two meters of each other but customers and staff can Hmm

I wish I said something at the time.

I hadn't been in Morrisons since before lockdown, so stood in the wrong place to put stuff on the belt. You have to stand at the end of the belt (where in the past I would of put the trolley)

Yes got shouted at that I have to stay 2 metres away, all well and good apart form being scolded

Move to the bottom to pack up and no restrictions at all and the cashier frequently puts things in my hand

FrenchBoule · 16/07/2020 09:20

I had the same at tesco. She was even dictating which way the trolley should be.
Last 3 visits to Tesco were such a nightmare that I don’t intend to visit them any time soon.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 16/07/2020 09:28

Oh crikey I have to go to Morrison's tonight! Thanks OP, you've given me a nudge to be super careful about where the lines are!

ClashCityRocker · 16/07/2020 09:35

My tesco the line makes it impossible to pack your shopping unless you have arms like Mr Tickle.

In fact I suspect me having to stand behind the line and lean forward as far as possible whilst the cashier has to simultaneously lean forward to pass my shopping results in my head being closer to the cashiers than it would otherwise be.

I don't envy them having to police it at all though.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 16/07/2020 09:47

I've been in Aldi and the till operator has shouted a couple of times to people behind me in the queue. I pointed out to her that they were all behind the lines (I think it just looked as if they were close to each other from her angle). I suppose some staff are, understandably, anxious. Try not to take it personally, they may have been very anxious. I would probably have stopped the one from getting too close though, but without shouting at them.

It's a bit like the pictures in the newspapers on beaches. They all look so crowded together (and some are) but other pictures are misleading.

BoingBoingyBoing · 16/07/2020 10:07

Google covid shop assistant risk, maybe understand why some may be on short fuses and then get over it.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 16/07/2020 10:18

I was in Asda a few weeks ago and saw a "colleague " wearing a t shirt with "PLEASE PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING " emblazoned on it, walking up every single aisle the wrong way. And I mean every one. Whilst not socially distancing AT ALL. So not all those working in supermarkets are always trying their best.

I was too tired and pissed off and on a short fuse myself to say anything.

2andahalfpints · 16/07/2020 10:21

Asda worker actually brushed past me! Won't be going in store again for a long time

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 16/07/2020 10:25

Whereas in Sainsbury's this am staff were---- keeping their distance well and we kept having the

"after you",

"no, you go first",

"no, I insist"

dance Grin

Took longer to get round but safer and ver ver civilised although they had no Noilly Prat so there goes my weekend martini, grrr

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 16/07/2020 10:25

Ahhh epic strike through fail there Grin

DrMadelineMaxwell · 16/07/2020 10:32

On a recent trip to Tesco ther were 5 different staff members, all wearing the 'stay 2m away from each other' t shirts and all packed into the one small aisle either picking for online orders or stacking shelves, making it impossible for them to distance or any shoppers to enter the aisle if they wanted to be able to distance.

And when DH went to Morrisons recently he stood on the spot that was marked for standing on while waiting for the tils and was STILL asked to move back to a further away spot despite being exactly where he should have been in the first place.

It's all bonkers at present and the part I hate most is not being able to shop easily and normally anywhere, making everything a chore.

BluebellForest836 · 16/07/2020 10:40

When she shouted at you the first time you should of said ‘ I already am ‘

People and these lines, ridiculous

emmiemms · 16/07/2020 12:07

Seems this isn't just a one off then. I totally get that the workers are having a tough time. As for the printed t shirts, I have seen that too with 4 workers all stood closely together.

@BluebellForest836 I wish I did but I was too embarrassed as it was so abrupt I felt like a child being told off.

I got scolded for picking clothes off a rail in H and M. Was told to put them in a pile so they could be quarantined. Hmm

What were you expected to do? I haven't been clothes shopping yet!
OP posts:
Deux · 16/07/2020 12:45

Exactly. I can’t say I’m going to rush back either and I’ll stick to online. The member of staff was folding clothes on a display and pulled their face mask down to scold me then their germy hands continued folding clothes. I put it down to them having a bad day. 🤷‍♀️

It wasn’t like that in the other shops I went in to.

Iwantacookie · 16/07/2020 12:48

Just had this in aldi. The way you queue means people returning trolleys have to walk past the queue in close quarters. I took half a step back to let someone return their trolley and was shouted 2 meters by the staff member on the door. Unless he expected me to jump on top of the trolleys I had nowhere else to go.

KatieB55 · 16/07/2020 13:10

Social distancing doesn't happen at all in the Co-op where we live. I was unloading my shopping last week and had to ask the person waiting behind me to stand behind the line. It's all just really stressful! I've managed to get online orders for the next two weeks so I won't have to go again for a while!

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 16/07/2020 13:22

If you were definitely behind the line, then YANBU. I'd have left my shopping (on the conveyor belt just to be petty) then walk out.

To those saying "well they're sick of having to tell people a thousand times a day" I don't mean to be rude but it's literally part of their job. We're all confused, trying to get used to different rules in different shops. As long as the OP wasn't being deliberately twattish or rude herself then the checkout lady was very unreasonable.

Other supermarkets are less strict, it's different everywhere you go!!
