Should I eat the chicken

I bought a Sainsburys breast/crown of chicken with pork and sage stuffing a few days ago. It's dated the 15th July so thought I need to use it tonight. I've just opened the film and there is a smell, it's not overpowering, or rancid but it does have a weird smell. Maybe it's the pork stuffing? It's been stored at 4 degrees in fridge, it's not been out on counter and the film was intact. It takes 60 mins to roast. I've put it on oven but I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to serve it as the date was today. The smell wasn't overpowering but present. What would you do?

Sometimes things smell weird after being opened. I'd still eat it.

dogperson05 · 15/07/2020 12:02

Thanks, I'm hoping once cooked it smells better

Unless the weird smell was overly unpleasant, I would eat it.

Spidey66 · 15/07/2020 12:03

I need new glasses. I read it as ‘should I eat the children?’

I mean I know lockdowns been tough but that’s drastic!

dogperson05 · 15/07/2020 12:04

The smell wasn't great, but I didn't recoil, I went in for second sniff so no gagging or pungent smell but not great?

@Spidey66 hahah nope, no children! Just questionable chicken crown!

I will eat many things that are well past their use-by date, cut the mould off cheese etc but a chicken that smells a bit funny? Not a chance.

I had some raw chicken once that smelt a bit funny so I left it in the fridge meaning to return it to the shop I'd bought it from as it was still well within date. The next morning the smell was unbelievable so I'm damn glad I didn't take a chance!

I often find supermarket chicken/pork smells strongly due to the plastic packaging - so yes, I'd eat it

LoseLooseLucy · 15/07/2020 12:08

I'd cook it and see how it smells then.

dogperson05 · 15/07/2020 12:10

It's been in oven for about 30 mins, smells ok but now I just have it in my head that I'll get food positioning - but then I think well I'm sure the supermarket are probably still selling the same batch dated for today and reducing them so people will be buying and cooking them tonight too.

Food poisoning not positioning !!!!

Thanks for replies, I've cooked it and it seems fine, smells good. I've cooled it and put in fridge. Will heat up later with gravy and hope I don't make myself ill

If it's bad it will still have a funny taste/smell once cooked.

Unless the smell made you gag or was that very obvious bad chicken smell (kinda vinegary do you know what i mean?) then you should be fine :)

Callmedolly · 15/07/2020 13:50

Oh just seen its cooked and fine...enjoy!

dogperson05 · 15/07/2020 23:54

Thanks all, had it at half 5 tonight and we are both still ok! It was actually really nice 😅
