Aibu to want a massive car?

cultkid · 15/07/2020 11:53

I have an Arteon at the minute. It's basically the biggest cabin and boot size I could find without having a van/ SUV which would be quite the gas guzzler / possibly a bit too big to be respectful on school run

We have 3 bikes and my youngest will have one soon too. We love the outdoors. Lease is coming up in Jan and I need to order a new car sort of in the next 12 weeks or I need to extend the lease

The car is 260£ all in pm which is a great price and I really love it but the car is too small for the boys now with their long legs/ car seats in the back

I can't even fit between the two car seats in the back and I am only 47 kg

What cars could I look at and is it bad to get a big one? I want another baby, my husband doesn't but I think we will have one anyway. It would likely be during the lease period of this next car I order so what ideas could I have?

Thinking of
Sharan
Seat Altecca (i think that's what it is)
Mercedes Vito or whatever the van one is called
Transporter (husband had one for work but has now got a crafter coming it only has 3 seats)
Xc90 (but not keen)

I want to find a good deal as wellon the car

Ideas?

@TheStoic

You are going to have a baby against your husband’s wishes, AND you want a big car, AND you’re only 47kg???

You could’ve had 3 different threads. Lazy.

😂😂😂💀

Shmithecat2 · 15/07/2020 13:04

You'd be better off getting a bike rack and looking at an estate car like the Skoda Superb.

Loveinatimeofcovid · 15/07/2020 13:04

Don’t discount a good estate car. You can get roof racks for bikes and you get plenty of bout and leg room usually. We had a BMW a while back that was as roomy as a full sized Range Rover.

fuckinghellapeacock · 15/07/2020 13:08

£260 is a good price? Fuck me I can't comprehend MN sometimes.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 15/07/2020 13:10

@TheStoic Grin

Also - Oh dear I seem to have set off the human rights police

Which of your human rights are we policing OP?

BikeRunSki · 15/07/2020 13:11

@cultkid- it drives fine. I’ve driven diesel VWs for years, just feels like a bigger one of them. It’s not much longer than the Octavia it replaced, and certainly shorter than the Octavia + tow bar mounted bike rack.

We walk to school.

Marpan · 15/07/2020 13:12

That’s odd. I’m 5.6 45 kg and fit in between two car seats. You must have massive car seats.

Pinkypie86 · 15/07/2020 13:15

Ford Kuga. Huge boot, good on fuel, 3 standard sized seats in the back, all leather option.

BMW X3. Again, similar but, more pricey.

Audi Q7. I'd recommend going the whole hog, getting a family car with 7 seats, huge boot, ridiculous room in the back and, the diesel option isn't so bad on fuel.

You may need to go to the 4x4 section. :/

puffinkoala · 15/07/2020 13:18

I want another baby, my husband doesn't but I think we will have one anyway

Good luck with that. So you're going to have a child AND buy a big show-off gaz-guzzling car. Poor planet.

bamboothrough · 15/07/2020 13:19

We’ve got an outlander as mentioned above, it’s ok but not huge, you could probably fit in the back middle but not 3 car seats in the back. Boot is big but smaller than you’d expect

Northernexile · 15/07/2020 13:20

I have an XC90 and I love it. Two car seats currently in the 2nd row (one booster and one 5-point) , and a built-in pop-up booster in between them for the 8 year old. I could probably fit in the middle if necessary and I'm 5' 8. Two seats in 3rd row that we have for occasions when we have extra passengers. They even have decent leg room. Booot is cavernous when back row folded down and still big enough for shopping when up. It is pretty big but I live rurally so reckon I can get away with it. Not many cars can fit three seats in the middle row comfortably unless you go for an MPV, but this one can.

princesspuds2004 · 15/07/2020 13:22

Have you considered a Hyundai i800 ? its an 8 seater about the same size as a transporter, good boot size as well

cultkid · 15/07/2020 13:23

Yes we have a Saris Bones actually but the thing is it's an arse ache to get stuff out the boot with bikes on and seAts in the back

Ill look at a Skoda estate and an xc90

Yes our car seats are huge and I hate them but they are safe

Thanks for the more helpful replies I just got

YABU. Stop trashing the planet and get rid of the car entirely. Rearrange your life so you can walk/cycle/use public transport instead of driving.

It's not that you can't, it's that you've decided your lifestyle preferences outweigh others' rights to clean air, water, and a safe home.

GlassHouseYouGlassHouse · 15/07/2020 13:29

YANBU you can have whatever car you like. Go and have a look at some in the flesh, might help you decide.

1forAll74 · 15/07/2020 13:30

But please don't come parking outside the school here,in my village, with a narrow road. It is usually full of these large vehicles on school days, and they block some residents in, who are unable to get into their own cars.

Enko · 15/07/2020 13:30

Have a look at the Ford C and S max too

Letsnotusemyname · 15/07/2020 13:31

We’ve got a T5 transporter, campervan.

The kombi versions have 5 seats and 1/2 a van load of space.

Bikes can go on towbar bike rack easily.

Does about 40mpg on diesel. Can keep up with traffic, great visiblity. Tough childproof interior.

Whilst its big its smaller on the road than many other SUVs, shorter than some estates.

Never found a carpark I couldn’t get into. So far (at 120k miles) its reliable.

LouiseTrees · 15/07/2020 13:31

I’m not getting into app the tangential points. Seat Ateca is a good car and a nice big boot.

sirfredfredgeorge · 15/07/2020 13:32

£260 is a good price? Fuck me I can't comprehend MN sometimes

It is, our Ford Focus was 500 quid and I thought that was a very good deal, 260 is barely above the scrap value!

pinkgin85 · 15/07/2020 13:33

I'm 5'1 and 47kg too and within normal BMI but I drive a Toyota Corolla hybrid and I only have 2 kids, do I win mumsnet? Grin

meowcatmeow · 15/07/2020 13:34

I have a Transporter; I can fit 4 adult sized bikes in the back easily without taking any wheels off.

Cornishmumofone · 15/07/2020 13:37

Have you looked at a Citroen berlingo?

IndecentFeminist · 15/07/2020 13:37

We have three kids and a whole lot of stuff quite regularly, we converted a long wheel base trafic. Sits 6. Three big seats in the back, loads of leg room (including erf car seats) and then a double passenger seat in the front.

Very good on mileage too, can fit loads of bikes, paddle boards etc

Llamazoom · 15/07/2020 13:38

Op, no car advice but going by some of these batshit responses you’ve had buy a bus and I hope you have triplets 😂
Nobody in their right mind would use public transport by choice at the moment and how can you transport kids on a bike!
