To not feel guilty about spending a week in Spain?

madcow88 · 15/07/2020 10:32

I know I will probably get slated for this but I returned from a week in Spain in the early hours of this morning. I had an amazing week and I very much needed a relaxing holiday in the sun after recently having the 18th and 19th operation on my brain and spine. I wore a mask most of the holiday, washed my hands and maintained social distancing at all times. I also stayed in a villa and travelled in a car and didn't take public transport other than the plane. I didn't feel unsafe and I will be returning in September with the children.

Well my best friend has just called me and told me she thinks I am a selfish Madame to have taken the holiday and I have single handed contributed to a second wave of coronavirus that will kill thousands more people. It would also appear it is my fault that her DS won't be able to return to school in September due to the country being locked down again.

AIBU-to not feel guilty about going on holiday.
YANBU-she is right I have potentially caused a second wave of CV and I am a selfish twat!

@CrazyToast

There's scared and then there is rude and over the top. Her friend said a selfish Madame to have taken the holiday and I have single handed contributed to a second wave of coronavirus that will kill thousands more people.

Now that is just ridiculous.

MrsClatterbuck · 15/07/2020 14:42

Yanbu.
You had a well deserved break or perhaps an old fashioned term a convalescent holiday. I can't even imagine having so many brain and spinal surgeries.
Sounds like you took a lot more precautions than some of the people at home.

Hope you are recovering well Flowers

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/07/2020 14:44

Best friends get to say stuff like this to you, so the people saying 'best friend!????!??!??!' are spouting nonsense. Best freinds are honest in my book.

Having said that, I think it's monumentally arseholish to go from areas of high to low infection or vice versa. Don't travel from NY to NZ for example. But UK/Spain, are they really that different in terms of infection at the moment?

sothebellsring · 15/07/2020 14:47

Just got back from holiday, was fab. If people are judging us they're doing it behind our backs. YANBU, you've done nothing wrong, glad you had a good time!

SusieOwl4 · 15/07/2020 14:50

Don’t even try to justify yourself to her . Why should you ? You measured the risk . Took precautions , as much as anyone else in this country . Glad you had a good time .

If she mentions it again just say you are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine . Let’s move on . If she keeps on say , sorry end of conversation, and put the phone down .

Chesneyhawkes1 · 15/07/2020 15:15

YANBU I'm off for a week to Spain too.

I've not long finished chemo and radiotherapy and I wanted something to look forward to and take my mind off my scan to see if treatment worked.

I won't feel guilty. I'll enjoy lying on the beach/around the pool and relaxing.

MzHz · 15/07/2020 15:44

@Powerplant

Ditch the ‘best’ friend.
^This

If this is what you class as a friend, let alone a best friend, time to reassess your friendship I think

You have done nothing wrong.

MzHz · 15/07/2020 15:47

single handed contributed to a second wave of coronavirus that will kill thousands more people

The second wave that was supposed to come after May Bank Holiday? Or VE Day? Or BLE protests?

madcow88 · 15/07/2020 22:14

Thank you everyone... I didn't feel like I had done anything wrong. I think I need to reassess my friendship! Smile

I'm going next week to stay with family. I am a bit worried about the plane but my mum flew out ahead of us today and she said it was very smooth and very empty. I'm really looking forward to a couple of weeks in the sun. We're staying with family with lots of land and a private pool and self contained accommodation so I probably wont mix much while I'm there. And their numbers are lower than ours, theres been a couple of outbreaks recently but small areas, lockdowned quickly and they have a really good handle on what's happening where.

From everyone in the aviation industry.

Thank you OP, please get out there spread news of your lovley time and enjoy thousands of people will be losing their jobs with attitudes like your friends.

As far as I know all the European airlines and fitted in HEPA filters for the recirculation part of the AC and they will remove all virus particulate.

Plus the air enters the pak system at over 400C before it is cooled and mixed with the filtered recirc.

Hope that helps alay any fears for anyone flying x

userxx · 15/07/2020 22:26

Tell her to fuck off, job done 👍. Glad you enjoyed your holiday, you sound like you fully deserved it.

FVFrog · 15/07/2020 22:29

Going through a horrible divorce, family home we don’t want to leave just sold, and beloved family dog just diagnosed with bad heart condition, not sure if my business will survive post lockdown. We have rented a friend’s villa with a private pool mid August in Southern Spain. Keeping an eye on outbreaks and numbers, but very much looking forward to it!

Dee1975 · 15/07/2020 22:31

Your friend is jealous! (As am I!)
Hope you had a great time. Sounds like you needed a well deserved break.
You did everything within law and felt safe.
The risk is in the uk. You don’t need to ‘bring it back from Spain’ to cause a second wave!!.
Don’t let this ruin your holiday memories

MonsteraDeliciosa · 15/07/2020 22:41

DD headed out to Spain the very minute flights recommenced. We have an apartment there. She’s working on a thesis and just chilling. She had a rubbish time isolating in a student house with a horrible bully during lockdown. She’s feeling happy again now.
We’re going to join her within the next week or two. I couldn’t give a flying fuck who disapproves. If it’s legal and we socially distance and follow all other guidelines then I can’t see the problem.

OP YANBU. I hope you had a lovely holiday. Sounds like you needed it. I’m sorry your friend is an idiot.

fluffi · 15/07/2020 23:00

YANBU - if you followed all the SD rules both in UK and abroad, then risk is minimal and you won't be singlehandly responsible for a 2nd wave. Your friend is being absurd!

FWIW I'm not going out except to pharmacy, wear a mask outdoors during exercise (and of course would wear a mask indoors) and only been on less than a handful of permitted visits to family under guidelines since March but I don't begrudge you, my friends, colleagues or anyone else a well earned break as long as all the rules are followed (which it sounds like you did) to minimise the risks. Most countries have less virus cases than UK anyway, and the ones that don't (e.g. USA) have a 2 week quarantine on return so there is no problem!

Fluffymulletstyle · 16/07/2020 10:26

Your friend was rude the way she phrased it.

I do think it's madness that flights and holidays are restarting. Globally the pandemic is not under control.

There are risks in everything but I personally would not be getting on an aeroplane.

Rubychard · 16/07/2020 10:40

Yet another case of people making up their own rules, then berating others for not following them.

BarefootHippieChick · 16/07/2020 10:45

Good for you. We would be going too if we were allowed! We've stayed in for months, barely ventured out the house and done everything correctly, while watching others cram on parks and beaches, have big parties and generally live life as they always have done. The problem is, there will be no specific 'end date' to this, so when is good to fly again? Tomorrow? Next week? Next year? No one knows so honestly, things have to start getting going again as safely as possible. Plus honestly, I think I would feel safer in a lot of places abroad than here.
