Spay scar? Posting for traffic. Does it look okay? Not my cat, my friend's and she's worried it's not right/looks messy or not done correctly?

Thank you. I've posted in the litter tray too but my friend has quite bad anxiety and I just want to be able to try help. I personally don't think it looks too bad? Yanbu- its okay
Yabu- Needs to go back to a(different) vet. Thank you.

When was the cat spayed? How is she cleaning the stitches? Has the cat been jumping up on things? I confined my girl to one room after ,her op with no where she could jump to I also slept in the room.

Nameisthegame · 14/07/2020 22:29

Btw not a vet she should contact her vet if worried or looks worse.

jellybeanz1212 · 14/07/2020 22:32

They often get water under the wound but will disperse. Depends when this was done? If it's not hot, smelly or leaking fluid it looks ok to me but it's hard to tell. Friend should call her for advice if concerned

jellybeanz1212 · 14/07/2020 22:32

Call her vet should say

Whendoesthisgeteasier · 14/07/2020 22:34

It looks how I remember our cats looking. They are pretty gory. It does look a little like the cat has been picking slightly at the stitches as there is blood around the area? Has the cat been wearing a cone? Hopefully a vet or someone with more knowledge will be along soon to confirm it's looking ok.

Whendoesthisgeteasier · 14/07/2020 22:36

It shouldn't feel hot around the wound. It really looks ok to me on closer inspection.

Housewoes23 · 14/07/2020 22:39

Aw thanks so much all of you. It will make a real difference to her. :)

Housewoes23 · 14/07/2020 22:51

It was only done today. And she's wearing a cone. :)

That looks ok to me, she just needs to speak to the vet if there is any discharge, Swelling or if it feels hot. Puss should be having a post op check soon anyway so I'm sure it will be fine.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 14/07/2020 23:19

Looks fine! Not a vet but a cat owner for 20 years and been through many operations.

ArthurMorgan · 14/07/2020 23:23

I'm not a vet but I've had a lot of cats, it looks ok to me given that was done earlier today, spay stitches can look a bit gruesome, probably because of where it is so the skin can be bunchy looking.. but echoing previous posters, if it gets warm to the touch or starts leaking / oozing, call the vet immediately.

Wriggles10 · 14/07/2020 23:36

It does look a little messy but I'm sure it's ok and will be fine when she's cleaned herself a little more. Just for reference here's my cats wound on the day she was spayed last week.

PotholeParadise · 14/07/2020 23:47

I was going to say it looks like she's been scratching at it, but I see it was only done today, so I'm maybe blaming the cat for something she hasn't done! It doesn't look abnormal for the first day.

Not a vet, but I have fussed over my own cats getting spayed. I'd say to tell your friend to just follow the vet's guidance: keep an eye on it, give her TLC and keep her inside, check whether it feels hot to the touch, or starts oozing, and whether she starts eating and pooing normally once the anaesthetic has worn off tonight. And send the vet the follow up photos on the days they specified (day 2?) so they can monitor how it's going.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 14/07/2020 23:52

I'd echo what everyone else says, looks nice and clean. Keep her cone on and it should be fine.

PotholeParadise · 14/07/2020 23:53

P.S. I don't want to body-shame the cat, but is she a rather large young lady? Grin It looks like they had to do a longer incision than on my own bonsai cat. That might account for the ugliness.

VeggieSausageRoll · 14/07/2020 23:56

It's a large incision for a spay but the wound looks fine. If she wants to clean it up a bit she can use some cooled boiled water and something non fibrous so a swab or something rather than cotton wool

Emmelina · 15/07/2020 00:10

It doesn’t look bad, if it’s fresh today. Your friend will have been advised to discourage the cat from jumping up on things for a couple of days and what to look out for in terms of healing.

Housewoes23 · 15/07/2020 00:32

@PotholeParadise Friend told me that the vet actually said to her that the incision is wider than normal because her cat is fat!Grin

I'll pass the advice on, thank you.
And thank you so much everyone
I'm quite touched was a little worried people would tell me to bog off posting on here :)

Oh dear. Grin

Tell her not to google spay incisions. Google doesn't help! Is this is an adult or nearly adult cat, whose procedure was delayed by lockdown? If she googles, she'll get pictures for cats of very different stature, like small for their age 4 month old kittens. My vet won't neuter until they reach 2kg, so very small. Judging by my own bonsai, the incisions can be positively minute on minute cats. She'll worry herself sick!

Housewoes23 · 15/07/2020 08:39

I know lol

She's a rescue and yes an adult
Thanks again all, I'll message her later to see how puss is doing and I'm guessing she's already googled and scared herself!

ifonly4 · 15/07/2020 08:48

Haven't seen one for many years, but if it was done in the last 24 hours, I wouldn't worry. As with any operation, just keep an eye on weeping in terms of blood or infection. With Covid restrictions, the vet would probably be quite happy to have an initial look at a photo if your friend is worried in the next few days.
