Bunk beds

Really conflicted about getting my kids a bunk bed. Eldest one really wants one as seen others with one. I don’t feel they are safe. Top child could fall off and bottom child I would keep stressing about more as the bunk bed could collapsed and crush my child. What are your opinions? Please be kind I do worry about EVERYTHING!

My two have a bunk bed. The only time either of them has fallen out of it is my youngest who fell out of the bottom bunk. We took the bed guard off last year and the first night with it off, he rolled out!

Ours is from ikea. Every single bunk bed I have seen has a frame around the top bunk to stop falls. They are a pain to change. I have to get DH to do the sheet on the top bunk because it is as tall as me.

If you are worried about the youngest on the bottom, you could look into a loft bed. It still allows you to save space. We looked at a loft bed first. We were planning on putting all the toys etc under the loft bed. But when we looked at prices and getting the most out of what we bought, we decided big bunk beds were better. I put DS2 in the bottom when he was 2.5 with a bed guard.

Invest in a good one! We have one from kidsfuntime beds which is excellent- double in bottom. My kids 4 &6 never had issues!

My oldest was in the top bunk until he was about 10, then the youngest went in the top when he was about 4. They have never fallen out. I slept in bunk beds until about 11.
The youngest is now 6, and does like to climb up to the top of the bunk bed and jump off 🙄 hasn't broken anything yet surprisingly.

I'd be more worried about the 2yo climbing the ladders

Mine did this - and fell off!

If you are worried about beds collapsing, couldn't you fix them to the wall somehow? I'm sure I've seen this done, with heavy brackets, to stop the beds being tipped over sideways (which also never happens, btw).

My boys were in bunks for a while and two of my girls also had bunk beds. Never ever did anyone fall out or anything collapse, and the only injuries were mine, incurred whilst trying to change the beds!

DC 9 wanted bunk beds ( didn't need them but wanted the bottom bunk for teddies and sleepovers).
I'm paranoid - so when friends come over I drag both mattresses to the floor and make both DC and friend sleep there instead whilst the bunk bed stands empty Grin

I'd never get one again.
My worry is collapse.

InkieNecro · 14/07/2020 17:29

I imagine most of those injuries are idiot children swinging into the bottom bunk from the top or leaping off and injuring themselves rather than the beds collapsing.

I never fell out of my top bunk or hurt myself. My brother broke his arm jumping off and a friend of his knocked a tooth out trying to swing like Tarzan.

It will depend on your children and how much you can trust them.

Regarding sheets...
Ds1 learned to put a fitted sheet on very quickly Grin

No one ever fell off the top bunk but they had a habit of pulling the mattresses off and jumping off the top bunk Hmm

They had bunk beds at my mums before they had them at home. Ds2 was always climbing the ladder and getting stuck on the top bunk. So mum used to take the ladder off when they were visiting. He scaled the bed frame instead and got stuck on the top bunk Grin

My DSis and I had bunk beds and I had the top one. I never fell out while sleeping but did fall over the side whilst larking about. The beds were very close to a wall and I was wedged upside down. I got down ok and found it very funny. I was 10 and DSis was 7. She never fell out.
