School and wound

DD (year 1) fell off her bike today onto broken glass and after a trip to A&E her leg has been glued and steristripped. It was pretty deep and the Dr was unsure if it’d hold but it seemed to so she didn’t push for proper stitches. Would you send her to school this week? I’m working from home but have lots of long phone meetings, DH is back in the office. Other DC back at school too now. I’m worried about her falling over in the playground or if coming apart if she runs.

YABU - don’t send her
YANBU - Send her

Did you ask the dr about recovery time or anything she shouldn't do at the moment?

Foxinsocks1 · 13/07/2020 20:30

Dr just said to keep it dry and covered, gave us dressings to cover it if the current one comes off. And to avoid sports.

Never had the glue and steristrips on any DC before so not sure what we’re meant to do. I’m just worried because of how deep it was and don’t want it to open but don’t want her missing school unnecessarily or at home when I’m working if not needed.

School are used to this sort of thing. I’d send her.

lockdownparty · 13/07/2020 20:33

I'd maybe keep her off tomorrow, it will likely be sore overnight and she might not sleep well / be feeling a bit overwrought about being in hospital etc.
See how she is the following day? If she has to avoid sport / running around she might have to be kept in at playtime?

Sparklesocks · 13/07/2020 20:33

I would send her in and keep an eye on it day to day

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/07/2020 20:35

So she can go to school but with a note to excuse from PE /Physical activities and a warning not to run around in the playground..?

mineofuselessinformation · 13/07/2020 20:36

I'd judge by how much pain she is in the morning.
If she's able to walk about without complaining or obvious pain, send her to school, but let them know what's happened so she doesn't do PE, and ask the staff to keep an eye on her.

BlusteryLake · 13/07/2020 20:36

I wouldn't think twice about sending her in.

toria658 · 13/07/2020 20:38

I hope she is feeling better and you have recovered from shock! It all sounds very painful.

I think it depends upon your relationship with the school, is it possible that she is able to have a quiet space at playtime or lunch to ensure her wound is not knocked or jostled? Are you able to have a chat with her teacher and see what the school thinks? How self sufficient is she re asking for help if she needs it?

I’d talk to the school first and see what they can offer in terms of support. I do wish her a speedy recovery.

IncrediblySadToo · 13/07/2020 20:43

Just because the Dr wasn't sure about it holding, I'd keep her at home tomorrow to make sure she's not stressing the wound & I'd have a talk to the school Tomorrow, see if they can offer any assurances about alternative for break times etc (ours would let her read/colour in, whatever in a semi supervised space.

Hope it stays stuck!!

BackforGood · 13/07/2020 20:52

Send her to school, and let them know the hospital said to avoid running for X days, so can she sit out playtime / PE

Foxinsocks1 · 13/07/2020 21:03

Thanks all. Nothing like Mum guilt to make you overthink everything. My friend is a TA at the school and said they won’t be able to keep her in due to more regular cleaning of desks but PE isn’t going on at the moment. I’ll keep her home tomorrow and if all ok I’ll send her on Wednesday
