“Rioting” or protesting?

My bf was on the phone to his dad recently (they don’t speak that often). It was around the time of the BLM protests.

He asked if he/we had been out “rioting”.

I pushed my bf to ask his dad what he meant by this but he hasn’t.

It is still playing on my mind.

I presume he equates protesting with rioting and it riles me.

What do others think?

Rioting: "the violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd"

There was certainly a lot of this happening, both in the UK and the US.

A protest is peaceful.

From the media there did seem to be some rioting in amongst the peaceful protests for BLM.

Not all protest marches are peaceful. I was at the Brexit marches. They were peaceful. The anti-capitalist marches that take place in May each year usually target places near my office in the City. They are rarely peaceful and in some cases could be described as riots.

Where were the BLM riots?

It was rioting, but regardless, they shouldn’t have been protesting either. We’re in the middle of a pandemic Hmm

I had this row on Mumsnet a lot over the time of the BLM protests OP.
