To ask for book recommendations

Can I ask for book recommendations for my ten year old DS please? He is what you would call a "reluctant reader". At the moment he's stuck on the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books, which are fine but I'd like him to branch out a bit. If you have DC of a similar age can you please let me know which books they enjoy? Thanks all.

Alex Rider has mine griped

Is he into football? New Roy of the Rovers good then Foul Play by Tom Palmer perhaps when he is a bit older. Then there's the Jamie Johnson ones.

For adventure try Rob Lloyd Jones' Jake Atlas or Wild Boy

Todaywewilldobetter · 12/07/2020 22:02

Tom Gates - mine reverts to these at any opportunity!
Frank Cottrell Boyce's books are funny
Iguana Boy series

NeutralJanet · 12/07/2020 22:03

My 9 year old likes the David Walliams books and has just started the Harry Potter series.

FourEyesGood · 12/07/2020 22:15

My DS got really into the Percy Jackson series when he was 10. They’re funny and well-written, and are a great way into Greek myths.

BankofNook · 12/07/2020 22:15

Alex Rider for mine too and the Percy Jackson series plus the Apollo books by the same author. Skulduggary Pleasant is another favourite, it's about a skeleton detective and there's magic. He enjoyed Mr Penguin and has just started reading a book called Nevermoor which seems pretty good.

Has he tried different genres? Maybe he just hasn't found the genre he loves.

For mystery/whodunnit try:
The Secret of the Night Train
The Nowhere Imporium
The Uncommoners series

For fun, silly puzzle solving muster I cant recommend the Mr. Lemoncello series more. It's so much fun; kids love it.

For magical adventure:
The Polar Bear Explorer's Club series
Atlantis Rising series
Mark of the Thief series
The Blackwell Pages (starts with Loki's Wolves)
The Beyonders (properly amazing)
The Cronus Chronicles

Something a bit easier but really fun:
Boot: Small Robot, Big Adventure and its sequel.
Jack Stalwart collection. (Secret agent kid)
The Notebook of Doom series.

Those last 2 are aimed at younger kids but if he is a reluctant reader then the short stories might be better suited, and they are entertaining and exciting.

Ooh, also, does he have access to a tablet which he could read on?

If you have kindle unlimited then there is a series called Time Hunters by Carl Ashmore. Its great.
The Accidental Pirates and its sequel are also available on kindle unlimited (if they still are!). They're very funny pirate adventure stories.

Thank you so much for those suggestions. You have given me lots of food for thought - I'll go and check them out now.

@BobbieDraper thanks for going to the trouble of typing out all those suggestions.

No problem.

There are lots of reading lists online for reluctant readers if he finds the larger chapter books a bit too daunting, this is one; www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/genre/rel/Reluctant-Readers.html#link3

Hopefully you find some books he will enjoy!

The books by Ross Welford are fantastic. Especially The 1000-Year-Old Boy and How Not To Be Invisible.

BobbieDraper · 13/07/2020 11:50

@Jerble

Oh! The 1000 Year Old Boy looks really interesting. We just got it and my 8 year old is looking forward to it; I was a bit worried it might be too melancholy. Glad to hear it's good

Jerble · 13/07/2020 11:56

@BobbieDraper - It was the first of his books that my children read and is a brilliant way to get them reading a longer-length novel. Lots of action so the story keeps moving along, but also interesting parts to think about. We all really enjoyed it.
