Getting braces as an adult

Posting here for traffic.
Has anyone had braces/teeth straightening as adults? Had braces as a teen, didn't wear my retainer, one tooth on my bottom row has noticeably moved so just want braces on the bottom row as the top set are still perfect.
Did you have bracket braces or invisalign type braces? How much did it cost? Is it worth it? Has anyone just got braces for one row of teeth?

I had tracks, took six months for too and bottom.

Cost £2500 or thereabouts.

It was a deal off groupon. Was a dentist in cheshire.

I am really glad I did it.

I'm in the same situation, except it is a top tooth that has moved! Also thinking seriously about this - watching with interest!

I've had Invisalign, it's not cheap (£3000 for a light case, £4500 for a full case) but it has been worth it as my teeth would have just got worse and worse. I got a two year interest free credit card to just pay it off gradually.

BGirlBouillabaisse · 12/07/2020 18:05

I just had an Invisalign consultation (I had braces at about 25/26 but teeth have moved slightly). I was quoted £3200 for a six month treatment, which I found a bit expensive!

Matilda15 · 12/07/2020 18:08

I have Invisalign. I’m almost done and it cost £3750. Genuinely the best thing I’ve ever done for myself as it has done wonders for my confidence

prettygreeneyes12 · 12/07/2020 18:11

I’m 18 months in to having Damon braces which have white brackets are a bit less noticeable. If lockdown hadn’t happened they’d have been off by now. I’m so pleased I did it, I had braces twice as a teenager and the technology has come on loads and they are really straight this time. £4800 so not cheap but I paid in monthly instalments to my orthodontist. Well worth it in my view.

UnaCorda · 12/07/2020 18:16

Is it painful? Blush

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 12/07/2020 18:31

I didn't get braces as a teen, and my teeth are horrendous, I'm very self conscious of them but just can't justify so much money. Anyone know of any cheaper alternatives?

TicketToTheWrongFilm · 12/07/2020 18:35

I’ve wanted braces for a few years but it hasn’t been a priority. I’m now fed up and as soon as coronavirus isn’t in the way I’ll be getting them! I’ve discussed it with my dentist but there’s no need to start on it in these uncertain times.

In my case it’s just my 4 top front teeth that are now crooked (had braces as a teen). Nobody else cares in the slightest, but I do!

I had Invisalign treatment which finished in February of this year. Cost me 3 thousand, and involved having a mouth scan to create braces (basically retainers - I needed 16 so the whole process took 16 weeks) that you changed weekly. My cost covered the consultation, all the treatment, and three sets of retainers at the end of treatment. Some of the greatest things I have ever done. My teeth were fucked pretty crooked with a large overbite before, and it really damaged my confidence. I smile a whole heap more now, and actually look at my teeth in pictures and feel so happy about them. Fortunately, I paid in full using inheritance; I appreciate that I was very lucky.

Do you have to wear a retainer afterwards? My front teeth are crowded and I would love to have them straightened out but I’m not sure I would be able to sleep with a retainer in, I sleep so lightly as it is.

Spodge · 12/07/2020 18:42

I had Six Month Smiles - clear/white brackets and tracks. I originally only wanted the top done though the bottom was crooked too (but not very noticeable) but dentist advised me to have both done and I am glad he did. Cost about £2,500 and took - six months (!). It only moves teeth towards the front and is not suitable if you need loads of moving around, but my teeth were pretty crooked and they straightened up nicely.

The worst bit was the filing down in between the teeth to generate enough room for the movement necessary. It was not painful but like nails down a blackboard and very unpleasant.

The treatment was not painful but my jaw felt sore occasionally and it took a while for the insides of my mouth to get used to the brackets so I got the odd mouth ulcer

Food gets caught up in them, so you need to remember to check in a mirror after eating. No point in supposedly inconspicuous braces if they are full of bits of food!

Had to go back about once a month for adjustments.

You must, must, must use a retainer afterwards, though. I wear one every night even several years on. Could have had a fixed one fitted but I didn't like the thought of never being able to floss my teeth properly.

BroomHandledMouser · 12/07/2020 18:43

I have them!

I’m currently week 8 into 25 weeks of Invisalign. It cost me £4100, but I have a lot of movement and work involved too.

I have them for the top and bottom, they’re quite painful but a few days into the aligners and you get used to them.

I go once every month and have reductions made on my teeth, and then get given around four weeks worth of aligners.

I should be done around October time.

Thank you all for your replies! Did anyone pay in installments or was it a lump sum?

Sunnydayshereatlast · 12/07/2020 18:56

I got mine at 47!! Top and bottom train tracks. 10 months on. Retainer every night for a year then 2/3 nights a week forever! Very comfortable actually!
Cost 1500 quid at my dentist with their orthodontist.. NHS cost he said.

newhousestress · 12/07/2020 19:01

I had Six Month Smiles too which are clear brackets and a white wire. £3000 in total. Lower arch would have cost £1000 if you're just doing that. I had to pay 25% up front the rest in instalments. It was awkward at times but I'm really pleased with the results. Wish I'd done them when I was a bit younger!

AGirlHasNoShame · 12/07/2020 19:01

Also had Invisalign. My teeth blighted my whole life, I thought about them constantly and couldn’t bear to look in the mirror. I spent hours perfecting a weird smile that would hide the worst parts of my teeth and covered my mouth when laughing.

My teeth were horrendous! Getting Invisalign has changed my life, honestly. I actually love my teeth now and have a cracking smile (if I do say so 😂)

It cost £3900 and I paid in a lump sum but they had many many payment options.

Barely anyone noticed including all the nosey unfiltered children I teach. I would recommend it to anyone

Cuddling57 · 12/07/2020 19:02

Has anyone had stains from them after?

PaperMonster · 12/07/2020 19:05

I had braces as a teenager but I was never given a retainer so my top ones moved back - and they really messed up my bottom ones apparently. So I had NHS traintrack braces in my 40s. I’m unable to have fixed retainers fitted, so wear removable ones at night with no problems.

HemlockStarglimmer · 12/07/2020 19:05

I started wearing by a removable appliance first to slightly expand my upper jaw. Then 9 months of fixed appliances and head gear.
I was in my early forties and it cost a couple of grand. But that was the discounted price as my boss did it.

And I had the fixed ones out the week before I gave birth!

Sparklesocks · 12/07/2020 19:06

I had train track braces on my top row of teeth for about 18 months in my late 20s. It was about £1800, I also opted for the ceramic ones rather than metal which were about £200 more.

Didn’t mind wearing them, forgot I had them mostly and nobody ever said anything about them. Really pleased with the results.

I paid about £500 upfront and the rest was I monthly instalments.

FuckKnowsMate · 12/07/2020 19:12

I had train tracks on my bottom teeth at 22, best thing I ever did. Cost me about £1200 and I paid in 3 monthly installments. Had them on for over two years. Then when they came off I decided I wanted braces on the top so got them for £900ish, again paid in installments. I still have them on so all in all Ive had braces for about 5 years! And still no sign of them coming off any time soon!

AramintaLee · 12/07/2020 19:12

Another Invisalign wearer here! Best thing I ever did. I'd previously had metal train tracks and then a ceramic train track... both of which ripped the inside of my lips to pieces. Invisalign has been pain free and so convenient. You can take the braces out when you need to eat or drink... if you have a meeting at work or if you don't fancy wearing it on a date. It was expensive... about £4k, but I paid it off in instalments over the course of a year to avoid the interest rate.
