To be slightly aghast that Shirley Valentine was only 42?

I do realise it's late 80s fiction but I'm not far off that age and don't feel middle-aged at all (except maybe in the mornings lol)most of my friends still have primary school aged children, I'm just slightly horrified when I watched it I assumed she was mid 50s lol

God
Shit OP
That terrible ! I’m older than her and still feel young
Ish , don’t look it though !

I think there's a thing where, became people stick with hairdos over their life, a style from a particular era looks old now in that era because we associate it with old people now. Look at some of Diana's in the early 80s. She was young, but in some ways looks older.

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter

And no, women in their forties did not look particularly older (or younger) then than they do today

No way, I completely disagree with this. In the 1980s women in their 40s looked waaaay older than they do now. The styling alone made people look a decade older (eg shaggy perms, pleated skirts, blouses etc).Look at women like anne diamond and carol vorderman- they look younger now than they did 20 years ago!

They definitely did.

I mean, if you actually look at Pauline Collins' skin, it's quite plump and unlined for a woman in her late 40s (which she was at the time of the film). So take away the frumpy clothes and the unflattering perm and she'd probably, if anything, look younger than her age. But the 'matronly' style of the day definitely aged women.

love that film but god yes, I thought she was knocking on 60 too!

Nonotthisagain · 14/07/2020 22:22

Fuck me I'm 48 and no way am I older than Shirley Valentine! I still wear miniskirts, have long hair, wear fuck off heels and shop in h&m!!

Dee1975 · 14/07/2020 22:39

Gosh, now I feel old (45)!

LemonBreeland · 15/07/2020 11:32

I'm glad I checked Pauline Collins age, because I am 43 and am terrified I look that old Grin

I don think there was a very frumpy way of dressing back then. My Mum was in her thirties in the 80's and she looked younger in her fifties, because she started dressing better.

Milssofadoesntreallyfit · 15/07/2020 11:35

I was amazed she was 42, I'm 45 and thought crap.........
I do think the 80s fashion was partly to blame though, it made her look older than she was.
