Breakfast - peanut butter on toast
Lunch - homemade veggie soup
Dinner - homemade chilli/curry with cauliflower rice

My diet is shite but I don’t have the motivation to stick to a proper restrictive diet. I have around a stone to lose. I’m a picky eater and don’t like faffing.

I feel the soup isn’t enough on its own but don’t really want to add more carbs to it?

You need more protein at lunch...

whattimeisitrightnow · 11/07/2020 13:27

Something with lots of healthy fat and protein to go with lunch, like a handful of nuts or a yoghurt?
Chili/curry is always tasty, and you can bulk it out with pulses to make it more filling and nutritious

Lockheart · 11/07/2020 13:27

I think you should post this in the weight loss forum. AIBU isn't the best place...

MikeUniformMike · 11/07/2020 13:31

Chuck some soya chunks into the soup or add lentils when you make it.

pigsDOfly · 11/07/2020 13:37

I don't have the motivation to stick to a proper restrictive diet.

What you've listed sound incredibly restrictive to me. There's not enough food and definitely not enough protein.

You'll get very hungry on that sort of diet and won't be able to stay on it for long.

It's completely unnecessary to go a a madly restrictive diet to lose weight, you just need to eat the right things in the right quantity.

Why peanut butter on toast for breakfast? Much better to have something like porridge that will fill you up for longer and will probably be fewer calories.

Soup won't fill you up for lunch and by the middle of the afternoon you'll be looking longingly at something to make the hunger go away.

Something like piece of fish or chicken and a large salad with maybe a jacket potato would be better.

Batqueen · 11/07/2020 16:33

I often do butternut squash and lentil soup for lunch and add a splash of olive oil to keep me full longer. (It’s basically Mary Berry’s recipe with added red lentils).

I find I also need a 1-150 cal snack at around 4pm but otherwise has been working very well!

managedmis · 11/07/2020 16:34

What's in the soup?

Cut the peanut butter on toast, have eggs instead

Ginkypig · 11/07/2020 16:40

I always like bread or a roll (no butter though) with soup recently Dp has been making his own which is lovely with soup but if you don't want to add more carbs why don't you add some lentils or pearl barley or even rice when you are making your soup?

It will bulk it out but any of those things also fill you better than veg on its own.

midnightstar66 · 11/07/2020 16:43

I'd be starving and probably shaky if that's all I ate. It's sounds very restrictive to me! Even adding half a slice of whole meal bread and a slice of cheese with lunch would balance it if you feel ok on it though

MikeUniformMike · 11/07/2020 19:48

@Ginkypig, rice and pearl barley are carbs.

rosiejaune · 11/07/2020 20:03

Put the recipes into Cronometer and see what micronutrients you are short of, then adjust as necessary (e.g. add legumes to the soup). You still need to meet your nutritional requirements or you will crave food and overeat.

EasternDailyStress · 11/07/2020 20:23

I've lost a stone and a half by doing the following:

Breakfast 40g overnight oats, made with skimmed milk and chopped up fruit

Lunch Chicken/tuna/hard boiled eggs/ham with massive bowl of chopped up salad veg, with olive oil dressing and a handful of seeds

Snack: piece of fruit around 4.30 pm

D "normal" dinner (around 700 cals)

No eating after that, only water to drink, therefore fasting for around 12 hours until the next morning.

I have one evening off a week, when I will drink alcohol and eat crisps, chocolate etc.

I usually burn around 2200 calories, so try to stick to around 1700 a day. That way I average 1lb a week weight loss.

I feel this is healthy and sustainable.

Ginkypig · 11/07/2020 20:24

Well yes but they aren't complex or processed carbs like bread. I thought that's what the op would have meant.

You are right I made assumptions when I shouldn't have!

I hope you find something to sort out your lunch op!

beatrixpotterspencil · 11/07/2020 20:29

I eat very much like this, recently pescatarian though, and I have done for most of my adult life.
im 5'4 and 8 stone.
I've never had issues with energy levels, but I do have IBS so it suits me and I've never really messed with it.

people have said, over the years, that I eat like:
a) a sparrow
b) a rabbit
c) a disordered person

whatever.

unlike you I don't have a lunch but I have a 'supper' instead, usually cheese with nuts or fruit. or when I'm feeling frivolous, a large dairy milk or cupasoup Blush

we are all so individual with nutritional needs that if it works for you, you have energy and feel good (skin, mind, body) then I wouldn't worry.

beatrixpotterspencil · 11/07/2020 20:33

apologies, I had somehow not noticed you were wishing to lose weight.

on the face of it, you do not seem to eat too much. I think that was my point.
I tend to gain if I snack outside of meals or drink too much wine.
other than that my bodyweight stays relatively stable.
im 46.

unless you are adding massive portions or ingredients that are very calorie dense, I don't know how you could restrict without losing nutrients.
if someone asked me to give up my morning peanut butter on toast (with jam) id hoof them one Grin

forrandomposts · 11/07/2020 20:42

@Ginkypig but they are complex carbs? Which is a good thing!

lljkk · 11/07/2020 20:42

Needs more Doritos & chocolate.

cleanseTone · 11/07/2020 20:44

I often have two rice cakes with low fat cream cheese to go with soup. You need a bit of crunch to go with liquid. I also second putting lentils into soup, really fills you up.

Sparklynails7 · 11/07/2020 20:52

I’m slightly underweight and I’d be starving on that. Need more protein and healthy fats. I’ve heard that if you restrict to lose weight then you’ll just put the weight back on once you eat normally again.

MikeUniformMike · 11/07/2020 21:00

Rice isn't good as it is high GI. Brown rice is good though.

2020iscancelled · 11/07/2020 21:05

Meh. It really does not matter if you eat the greenest, leanest, holiest foods straight from the garden of Eden, if you eat more than your calorie expenditure you will gain weight. Yes even if all you eat is celery all the live long day.

Calories matter. You do not need to be restrictive, you need to download a decent tracker - I suggest Lose It app (much better than my fitness pal) and calculate the calories you need (the app will do it based on several factors) and then stick to it.

Eat whatever you like within that number and you will lose weight.

It REALLY IS that simple. It is unequivocal science based fact that the only element which matters in fat loss is your calorie deficit

Ginkypig · 11/07/2020 22:03

I'll just get my bloody coat will I! Blush
