Just wondering what they ask?
I'm presuming they'll ask when I shit last, but just wondering what else they'll ask I guess?

Depends what you’re in for really!

I have Crohn’s so see a colorectal surgeon for that. Man saved my life a few times! And managed to recreate me a belly button after a big surgery. He’s my hero!

But yeah probably ask alllllll about poo - how often, any pain, consistency, any blood, he might need a look and/or to stick a finger up and have a shufty about.

bellinisurge · 10/07/2020 17:32

Speak to your GP. Giving you the benefit of the doubt that you aren't getting off on this.

jessstan2 · 10/07/2020 17:34

I had a date with one, does that count? :-)

First off they'll ask about your bowel movements, any changes, blood, pain, frequency.

GimmeAy · 10/07/2020 17:35

Bellinsurge - you're a cynical sort - do an advanced search and you'll see that I'm not 'getting off' on anything. I've another thread related to this. But thanks for being a bit of a shit haha - it's fitting.
It's a telephone consultation so he won't be have a root around anywhere thank you very much!

What's it for? I have, but it was for liver surgery - the questions they asked were related to my condition (cancer) and the surgery I was waiting on.

GimmeAy · 10/07/2020 17:37

I suppose my bowel movements will be the topic of conversation then. Great. And it's at 9.30am, when my bowels might well decide to explode. Oh well.
Is it just your bowel movements that they discuss?

It's for blood in stool and months of diarrhoea and cramps I suppose. Blood in stool sample is what prompted the referral though.

I'd imagine they would ask about your general health, whether you have lost weight recently, what your diet is like, etc.

Didthatreallyhappen2 · 10/07/2020 17:40

You might be asked about any pain "down there", blood, changes. Family history of problems. They might ask you to go for blood tests (looking for coeliac for example). It seems horrendously embarrassing, but they do it 20 times a day and is perfectly routine for them.

Proudboomer · 10/07/2020 17:40

Depends on your illness.
My brother saw his surgeon before major surgery for colon cancer. Basically the surgeon told him what he would need to do to give him the best chance of living. He got to ask questions and then give his consent. But the choice was his whether he went ahead with a pretty large operation which would have life long implications even if he did survive the op as 20% don’t.

Oh God. Knowing me I'd want to vomit permanently on a a date with such a profession.

I take it he wasn't 'the shit' since it was one date only lol

Are you sure it's with a colorectal surgeon and non a gastroenterologist?

WombatStewForTea · 10/07/2020 17:44

But yes you will talk about poo. You get used to it Grin

GimmeAy · 10/07/2020 17:44

Ye well no history of any weird bowel stuff in the family.

Ugghh. I just can't stand the thoughts of discussing my poop.

I'll get over it.

I'm just shy, so unlikely to give gory details.

Yes, I'm 100% sure.

OP posts:
Proudboomer · 10/07/2020 17:45

I doubt it will be a surgeon as you only tend to see these after everyone else and it has been decided that surgery is needed.
Before my brother even saw the surgeon he has seen several other doctors and had chemo and radiotherapy on the go.

GimmeAy · 10/07/2020 17:46

I'd never heard of a colorectal surgeon before, so yes, I'm pretty sure that I heard correctly.

My brother saw mr Jenkins who is the leading core two surgeon in Europe and works out of st marks in Harrow which is a bowel hospital.

Belowwreck · 10/07/2020 17:48

That's medical. Colorectal is a surgeon.
GimmeAy · 10/07/2020 17:48

I love this on MN, where you state something and people start arguing with you!

Yes, it's a colorectal surgeon that I have an appointment with. Jees.

OP posts:
WombatStewForTea · 10/07/2020 17:49

Yeh that's what I thought. You'd only be seeing a colorectal surgeon if they were planning on surgery and seeing as you don't have a diagnosis yet they aren't going to jump straight to that. Even if it was suspected bowel cancer I can't imagine you'd see one.

GimmeAy · 10/07/2020 17:50

If it was a gastroenterologist I'd have used a different thread title for fucks sake.

WombatStewForTea · 10/07/2020 17:50

That's medical. Colorectal is a surgeon.

Can you explain what you mean?

Sharkerr · 10/07/2020 17:50

Ugghh. I just can't stand the thoughts of discussing my poop.

...really?

Coulda fooled me Hmm

GimmeAy · 10/07/2020 17:51

Well Wombat - I ain't seeing him/her, but I've an appointment with one on Tuesday morning.
