Dh and phone contracts petty I know

So dh and dd have phone contracts that dh took out. Both handsets are now paid off.
Yet dh has carried on paying 30 pm for the 2 contracts.
I have been nagging him to look into in but he couldn't be bothered.
So today managed to sort out new deal for dd saving £10 pm
So for the last year we have wasted £240 because dh couldn't be assed to sort it.
Aibu to be annoyed with dh but also with the phone company who have been increasing the monthly charge even though phone paid off.

Just be happy that you're saving money now and let the annoyance go. What's done is done!!

MsEllany · 10/07/2020 16:17

My husband is a tit like this.

He got a letter saying his contract was going up by £10 - for no reason. It said they’d do it automatically unless he contacted them.

I’m not kidding, he waited till ten minutes before closing before calling them to sort it. For no other reason than he couldn’t be bothered.

It wouldn’t irk me so much if it wasn’t ME paying the bill!

AryaStarkWolf · 10/07/2020 16:17

So were they still paying for the phones even though they should have been paid off? If so surely the phone provider owes the money back?

Northernsoulgirl45 · 10/07/2020 16:20

I must admit @AryaStarkWolf I thought they should automatically reduce the bill. It was incredibly easy to do it once dd found a way into the account on her phone.

hhhmmm I think I'd pursue that to see if they are owed some money back

sirfredfredgeorge · 10/07/2020 16:31

20 quid a month is still extremely expensive for a phone contract without any loan for the handset element.

ErickBroch · 10/07/2020 16:33

Yes it would piss me off but I would get over it. My DP paid £50 every month for a gym for 18 months and he went once. Couldn't be arsed to cancel it. When he finally called it took less than 2 minutes to cancel.

ErickBroch · 10/07/2020 16:33

@sirfredfredgeorge if you want unlimited data you are looking around £20 for a good sim deal.

zigzagbetty · 10/07/2020 16:35

I claimed money back when my old contract did this, though mine was only 3 months of overpayment.

Chloemol · 10/07/2020 17:00

Sorry but if you sorted now, why did t you do it a year ago?

gamerchick · 10/07/2020 17:05

Yeah they're twats like that. You have to physically wait for the renewal date and ring up if you want to go sim only.

It's pretty shocking.

Then your phone starts acting itself Angry

Northernsoulgirl45 · 10/07/2020 17:10

@Chloemol I didn't realise I could as contracts not in my name or dds name. Tried to ring but call centre shut. Told to download app. Did it on her phone so it worked.

My DH got a new phone but he paid so much PM for the phone and then so much for the calls data etc. They were separate direct debits. Phone now paid off and only one dd now for the contract. I would check the original contract as something is not right. We are with o2. Same for my phone.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 10/07/2020 17:12

Thanjs for tips i will suggest he tries to claim monry back. Thinking about it though its probably more like 20 months overpaying.

I think contract taken out before tbis was tbe norm @MrsClatterbuck

If you want to keep paying, then they don't owe money back. Its up to the person wjo has the contract to cancel or renegotiate
ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 10/07/2020 23:00

I’m another one with o2, once the 24 months are up you stop paying for the handset part and only pay your calls / data bundle. It happens automatically so I didn’t need to do anything. (I probably could get a cheaper sim only deal elsewhere, but I’m sticking for now as I get good signal with o2.)

IamMaz · 11/07/2020 08:19

I own my phone and buy 'Goodybags' from giffgaff [run via O2].
My current one is £8 a month.

Backbackandforth · 11/07/2020 08:24

O2 are the only company I know that do separate phone payment and tariff payment (as PP said when the phone is paid off that DD stops and just the tariff DD continues).

Other networks it’s say 30pm 24 month “minimum term” so no refund due and I’m sure quite the money maker for them!

eurochick · 11/07/2020 08:56

I can't believe the regulator hasn't stepped in to stop this yet. O2 is the only phone company acting honestly on this.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 11/07/2020 18:18

I am with O2. Been sim only for last few years. They are great at reducing your tariff when you ring but you still need to be proactive though.

My dh is like this. He insists on managing the bills. Fair enough. I'm not so precious that I actively want to do them. But he never shops around. We've been paying 50% more than we need to for electricity/gas for years now. And insurance is just as bad.
