I am a journalist and after having a baby decided to go fully freelance after five years at a National. I have always wanted to progress to being an editor. At the moment I make around £500-£1000 a week, which is great, but of course this could all change at the drop of a hat due to not having any contracts. I’ve applied for an editor role and have got to the second stage of the interview process and I have worked with the company as a freelancer for a while so stand a good chance. However at the end of the second interview, they told me the salary is £27,000, and that I would not be able to freelance anywhere else. Taking my earnings from anywhere between £26,000 - £52,000 down. The thing is, they said they do a lot of in-house promotion and that I will be able to keep progressing, which is great. I’d also be able to work remotely. I’m just not sure what to do, whether to withdraw my application and keep freelancing right now as I enjoy being able to work when I want while still making okay money, or to go into a permanent role with a pay-cut into a more senior staff role with the chance of progressing. My partner only works part time so we would alternate childcare as we are doing right now. Any advice?
