To feel shit scared about the state of the jobs market.

DH and me will be losing our jobs next month. I've actually been looking since before Xmas and had 2 interviews which I didn't get. I've continued applying for positions even in the lockdown and had no luck with interviews. These jobs are basic entry level literally pennies above the minimum wage. I just don't have a chance. I worry is it my age. Is it because my experience is too broad and not more deeper in one area.

Honestly I'm really scared. I'll do anything to keep a roof over my head and the kids but obviously long term I need to get back into work and it's just looking so shit. We've both been with our employees less than 2 years and won't even get statutory redundancy pay.

OP if you're interested in going into tech might be worth checking this out: codeclan.com

Are these courses actually any good? I worry that I'll spend a load of money on one and employees won't take them seriously. Isbutteracarb

Open university has lots of free courses at the minute. Seem like modules and range from introductory to advanced. Some are absolute bullshit but some look relevant.

Google open university free courses.

SepticTankYank thanks!

On a positive note, I've got an interview for the health records clerk!

Yanbu at all to be worried, I think most people are and it's a very difficult time.

Congratulations on your interview and good luck Flowers

We are always recruiting Health Care Assistants where I work, recruitment for that never ends, so if you get really stuck those roles are always worth looking for.

TeaAndHobnob · 10/07/2020 10:48

They are starting to recruit for roles to run the Census next year, the website opened this week. Have a look and see if anything looks suitable. And good luck to anyone facing redundancy & unemployment.

My nephew who is 23 has been told he could be made redundant he will find out today at some point.

SepticTankYank · 10/07/2020 23:39

Congratulations 🥳🥳🥳

Iamthewombat · 10/07/2020 23:45

I hope you get it, good luck.

I am terrified.

I have been made redundant after working throughout with a paycut. I worked like a dog for the company. some of the time there has been great and I progressed well. I was very proud of myself.

We had internal positions going. I had an interview this week. Two people doing one part and two doing the second. The first part was awkward. I did mess it up as just had to list examples of various topics. My own voice put me to sleep so dread to think what it did to them. No sectioning.

Anyway, the second part was with the most senior people. I was told they would call me. I waited twenty minutes before I chased. I was called back to be told that these two senior people were busy for the next few hours and would reschedule tomorrow. Too busy for a scheduled interview. That was on my first day of annual leave since Christmas (or thereabouts) and we drove home from our lovely British getaway early in the day so I could have good signal and not do the interview in Costa on the Motorway.

I'm so tempted to throw my toys out of the pram but need a job. Where is my pride?

ricksha · 14/07/2020 08:48

fuckingfuckers sorry to hear to you're going through this too. What kind of work do you do? Start looking for jobs now.

fuckingfuckers · 14/07/2020 10:00

@ricksha everything I do is tailored to the company I work for but it's asset risk/data/pricing for vehicles.

Prior to that I was sales and account management for the same company. I have a good skill set but it's getting that across without appearing a jack of all trades master of none. I'm terrified about the future and being unemployed.

How’s everyone getting on?

A glimmer of hope for anyone job seeking. After applying for what seems like a lot of jobs, I’ve finally been offered one. Just waiting for the reference and background checks but should hopefully be starting in the next few weeks.

GreyGardens88 · 17/08/2020 11:40

I was made redundant in July, was offered a new one a few weeks ago. But I started applying for jobs in May and glad I did

TazMac · 17/08/2020 11:55

Congratulations @GreyGardens88

It’s been the toughest job market I’ve ever seen but hopefully things are starting to pick up.

holymolyy · 17/08/2020 12:06

TazMac GreyGardens Congratulations to both of you. I have been offered a job. Hopefully start next month!

Unfortunately, my DH still hasn't had any luck. He's not even getting interviews for jobs that he is already doing. It's getting him a bit down.

Well that’s three of us. It was tough and I got rejected a lot more (or just no response) than usual. Good luck with your new roles and I hope things pick up for your husband.

Purplegloves · 17/08/2020 23:30

I can’t tell you how happy I am to hear that some of you have secured jobs! Huge congratulations! I have read this thread in horror and growing dread but seeing the recent posts has given me some hope.

I’m currently covering maternity leave until the end of the year and then it’s highly likely I’ll be given a thank you and goodbye before being faced with tackling the job market. I’m so terrified that there won’t be anything out there, especially one that will give me flexibility (I have two young DCs). I need to work for the sake of my mental health and would love to train as a nurse but haven’t got the right qualifications. I don’t like regretting choices I’ve made but reflecting on my career path (especially now) do make me wonder and worry that things might be too late (mid 30s).

Purplegloves · 17/08/2020 23:33

@holymolyy Really hope your DH finds something soon and anyone else looking. Sending all the luck in the world.

TazMac · 18/08/2020 00:12

@Purplegloves

Sending good luck to you too. I hope you find something. If not, would it be a good time to do your qualifications? If you’re mid 30s, then you’ve got a good 30 years of working life left. I retrained in my mid 30s but did it part time.

stayathomegardener · 18/08/2020 00:18

Congratulations!
