To think everyone knows that dogs are weighed in kilos but babies in lbs?

Well I'm obviously not bu because it's true that In the UK dogs, rabbits, cats etc are weighed in kilos ( ie you tell me your dog is 25kg and I can imagine the size )but babies are 8lbs 2oz and if you tell me the equivalent in kg I have no idea.
On the flip side I can imagine a 5k run more than a 3.3mile run but longer distances are in miles. Wine is in CL but pints are most definitely pints (as is milk but not coke)

Aibu to think we should decide what system we are using??

"Your baby weighs 2.135kg"
DH and I look at eachother
"Errr... What is that in pounds?"
"Not sure"

SleepingStandingUp · 09/07/2020 01:14

I don't really know what does into which, imperial or metric.
My babies are weighed in kg, I convert to lb for my sister 3 years older than me. They're measured in cm and converted into ft for the same sister. I do my own height in ft though and my weight in stones

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 09/07/2020 01:52

Hasn't the UK been in metric since the 1960's??? Surely anyone over 40 was taught metric at school?
That isn't the case. It is only since 1974 that all state schools have been required to teach the metric system as the primary system of measurement:

Had a funny conversation with my kids a while back who were ridiculing my old fashionedness in all things.
So I asked;
Their height? 5'4
Weight? 8 at 6lb
Weight at birth? 8lb 9oz
How far to work? 3 miles
Motorway speed limit? 70 mph
How many eggs in the box? Half a dozen
Temperature on a hot day? 80F
How muck milk in a big carton? 4 pints
Beer glass? A pint
How high to planes fly? 40,000 feet

I think they shocked themselves with their answers.

@JellyfishandShells @NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite- So metric was only taught at school since 1974, but that is still 46yrs ago!!!

Camomila · 09/07/2020 06:45

The midwives asked me if I wanted both DCs weights in kilos or lbs (4 year old and baby). I'm Italian and said kilos to both.
If someone tells me their toddler is 26lb or 2 stone I have no idea if thats tiny or giant unless I google it.

I also do all baking in grams not oz.

ContessaferJones · 09/07/2020 06:47

I grew up using kilos (different country) and now live in the UK. I have mostly managed to dodge imperial so far, hurrah Grin I find it a terribly weird system!

midnightstar66 · 09/07/2020 06:50

DC's were born abroad and weighed in kilo. I was actually surprised when we moved back here and the HV and Dr's still used the kilo measurement medically. I always thought they only used lb/stone as that's what everyone talked of. I understand kilo better but can convert it fairly easily in my head. I can flit between m and km fairly easily having spent significant times driving in different countries that use both

Hedgehog44 · 09/07/2020 06:50

I was taught at school with metric but my mum and dad used imperial so like most of us I use both. I like metric for cooking but maybe that's because i did more Home Economics at school than baking at home but I measure myself in stones and inches, wouldn't know a km if it bit me on the bum etc. It's a weird mixture when you think about it.

bluefoxmug · 09/07/2020 06:52

yabu
I learned in metrics (went to school abroad) and punds, stone, feet, inches, fahrenheit totally confuse me.

bluefoxmug · 09/07/2020 06:55

I like stones for measuring my weight though. such a nice low number Grin

Ifailed · 09/07/2020 06:58

pints are most definitely pints If a pub served me an American pint I'd be more than a bit annoyed.

thesparkthatbled · 09/07/2020 06:59

When I was buying a new house I would always look at the floorplans in feet and inches, but if I was to measure a room at home I use metric

TroysMammy · 09/07/2020 07:07

I prefer Fahrenheit in the summer because it feels warmer even though it isn't at the moment and I've put a vest on.

Hospital discharges show babies weight in grammes eg 3446g which means nothing to me. However when we ask the parents how heavy the baby was they tell us in pounds and ounces.

okiedokieme · 09/07/2020 07:10

My kids were weighed in kilos 20 years ago Hmm. The midwife did tell me the pounds for "my mother" but all charts etc were in kgs . My car distance counters, sat nav etc all in kgs. Can we please just go metric!???

WhiteCliffsBeside · 09/07/2020 07:13

I hate imperial, it's illogical and ridiculous.

KatyaZamolodchikova · 09/07/2020 07:16

This is so interesting. I’m 33. I do my height interchangeably in feet and inches or cm. I do my own weight in st & lb. I cook interchangeably in grams or oz. Distance is miles. Temperature is Celsius, Fahrenheit is confusing. Beer is pints, spirits are ml.

BikeRunSki · 09/07/2020 07:19

DBro works in oil exploration off shore.6
The American drillers he works with work in feet per hour. The Europeans work in m/s. Both believe that their’s is the correct way. Geologists from other parts of the world use other units but tend to convert to SI, m/S.

Aria20 · 09/07/2020 07:21

@notangelinajolie it's funny isn't it!im 33 and definitely when hear of people's weight or height prefer stones/lbs and feet/inches although I can use both. I cook with metric. Drive by miles though.

blueskys72 · 09/07/2020 07:22

We always ask for an inch/two inches etc off our hair at the hairdressers too!

AuntieStella · 09/07/2020 07:28

"Can we please just go metric!???"

We've been trying since the 1960s. I don't think there's a chance we shall.

I thought I was the buggered up age - both in use (allegedly) when I was young, but imperial being the 'right' way (quarter of sweets anyone?)

But my DC are taught both, so are better at switching between them. Knowing both, there's no need to move away from one or the other. Isn't it usually good for brains to be fluent in more than one system?

(A bit like a very mini version of learning other languages)

BikeRunSki · 09/07/2020 07:29

I run kilometres and cycle miles....

GlacindaTheTroll · 09/07/2020 07:29

Marijuana is sold in imperial - whose going to enforce change there? Trading standards? Grin

JacobReesMogadishu · 09/07/2020 07:35

I hate thaT car economy is mpg....surely they should quote miles per litre?

Oddly the vet weighs my cat in lb and the dog in kg.
