To be sad that there will be no £500 vouchers

Being able to make a frivolous purchase definitely would have got me back to the shops!

I’d have been happy with £50, and let’s face it, the high street is going to need help too.

As it is, we don’t eat out very often anyway but the thought of eating out at the moment, in an enclosed space with other people, doesn’t hold any appeal for me.

AJB120 · 08/07/2020 22:01

It was never gonna happen

AldiAisleofCrap · 08/07/2020 22:08

The people who think the vouchers were a bad idea, do you not know that Australia gave stimulus cheques after the 2008 crash and the US did the same for Covid.
The vouchers would have helped the economy, the government would not have been £500 down per voucher.

BlueBrian · 08/07/2020 22:08

Yeah bit of a bummer, was contemplating what to buy for £500 that would get the best price if resold on ebay, so I could have the cash.

SeasonFinale · 08/07/2020 22:17

US might have had a stimulus cheque but they don't get furlough pay. My sister gets unpaid furlough 2 weeks on 2 weeks off

gluteustothemaximus · 08/07/2020 22:26

Yep. I got very very excited. We all did. The thought of money we weren't expecting, to be able to spend on things we couldn't normally afford. Yes, it was nice to dream.

Cadent · 08/07/2020 22:41

There was never going to be a £500 voucher, a think tank came up with the idea and the media grabbed onto it. Think tanks come up with lots of lovely, but implausible ideas.

I wonder how it leaked?

SarahBellam · 08/07/2020 22:43

Everyone would have just bought an iPad and a takeaway. That’s what I’d have done, and then cried as the tax rate went up to 30p in the pound.

SarahBellam · 08/07/2020 22:48

Most chains offer discounts Monday to Wednesday anyway, and you can’t use more than one offer at a time, so you’re unlikely to be able to use your Clubcard vouchers and the gvt discount scheme.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 08/07/2020 22:48

The half price restaurant thing sounded quite good when I heard it in the chancellors speech - then realised 13 days max, and £10 max - not going to have everyone rushing, is it.
Might encourage me to eat out Mon-Wed rather than at the weekend.

Ginkypig · 08/07/2020 22:51

Ok I saw the news I get it now.

unchienandalusia · 08/07/2020 22:55

God people really don't get it do they!? It wasn't about giving you a bloody treat it is about incentivising people to go out and spend in our massively suffering hospitality industry.

Lexilooo · 08/07/2020 22:57

@RaininSummer

It isn't a £10 voucher, it is 50% off to a maximum of £10 per head. So you can buy cheaper items but will always have to put your own cash in and will never get change.

If your bacon buttie costs £3 you pay £1.50. If you go for a meal and it costs £30 per person you get £10 off per person and pay £20.

DollyPartons · 08/07/2020 23:01

Yanbu . UK needs to deal with obsesity not assist it.
£500 would've got me into high st. Oh well, I'll stay home, stay alert and not spend .

Vouchers for poorest seaside towns would have been an idea .

ActuallyItsEugene · 08/07/2020 23:02

I find it unbelievable that Rishi and his merry men think that a 50% discount (max £10 per head, how generous!) is enough to get people spending again. The way he announced it as though it was going to be a groundbreaking, revolutionary end to all our problems.

There's 3+ million people in this country who've had no income since March. They're facing food banks, repossession, rent arrears, debts up to their eyeballs.. but hey, have up to £10 each off of your dinner. Oh but only on certain days, at certain times (if you can book a table) and no alcohol,

With that, plus the banging on about stamp duty, he's really only 'helped' (if it can even be called that) those that are comfortable anyway.

Whilst £500 vouchers were very pie in the sky, I think he could've done something more to help people.
It doesn't support the majority of small, independent businesses either.

Lexilooo · 08/07/2020 23:04

www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2020/07/chancellor-announces-50--off-meal-discounts-in-august/?utm_content=1594210899&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook

You can use the offer alongside other offers and vouchers.

You can use the scheme as many times as you like, so you could have three meals a day three days a week for August if you wanted.

It does have to be eat in, so no takeaways unfortunately.

TeaLibrary · 08/07/2020 23:05

I'm disgusted. I'm an NHS front line employee. No decent pay deal or any recognition for us other than a few weeks of claps and a smack in the face from the government who are reinstating parking charges. Somehow a pathetic £10 off a meal out on monday to Wednesday isn't exactly an incentive to eat out.

ballsdeep · 08/07/2020 23:06

I'd already spent mine (in my head)

Randomfires · 08/07/2020 23:12

I’d planned to buy a big piece of furniture that is £1000 and use that for half....can’t buy it now

stairway · 08/07/2020 23:16

Tealibrary it's even worse for care workers, not only no recognition but they've even been blamed for care home deaths.

BlueBrian · 08/07/2020 23:17

Looks like the green deal thing might be worth far more than £500 to me anyway, have to take a look at the small print when it's out.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 08/07/2020 23:26

Yes gutted , liked the voucher idea especially if could use on the high street , incl restaurants as you still have to spend your money to get money off meal so even if £40 yOu need to spend £20 and of you have'nt got it, then you wont benefit
Even £200 each voucher would of been great , i blame papers for getting us all excited

goose1964 · 08/07/2020 23:29

It's my wedding anniversary in August so well probably eat out then. I'm hoping my local Italian or Indian sign up.

Purpletigers · 08/07/2020 23:32

It was a ridiculous idea and I’m surprised anyone thought it might actually happen . We’ll have enough to pay for by the time this is over, without giving out £500 to spend in restaurants .
Some restaurants will close but there are too many anyway.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 08/07/2020 23:36

@Purpletigers too many restaurants ? Maybe where you are but we have a lack of choice here and several ahut down recently with more since covid
We know have lots of empty premises and more people out of work
That one too many restaurant is someones livlihood or job
