To question if my 17-year-old DS is really passionate about racing?

DS1 (17) had talks about university applications at school today. He's decided he doesn't want to go to university as he's going to become a drift racer as cars are his passion. I questioned this as, despite playing a lot of driving video games, he:

(1) Has never shown any interest in working on the family car;
(2) Has been taken to car race events and didn't want to watch the races or trawl round the stalls;
(3) Hasn't made any attempt to prepare for his driving test despite having a licence for six months.

I have no problem with him wanting to be a drift racer, I'm just not convinced that this is really his life dream if he hasn't made any attempt to pursue it. So AIBU for questioning his passion?

Grin poor DS. You should probably point out he's about 12 years too late to make this career choice.

Also, he'd be better off getting a proper job to pay to do it, like everyone else does. The best the job, the better the car.

That's if you could stop laughing long enough though.

Also, if he is this immature, you might gently suggest that he take a year out and work at something ordinary and mundane before (if) he goes to university.

Err, who’s going to pay for the car, race entry fees, etc.?

Maybe Encourage him to become a computer programmer making car games, rather than driving cars.

Google the entry fees and show him.. Dh's 'hobby' with his hobby accessory is 800 quid for one occasion!!
Shock
And the licence /accessory /parts /repairs /safety outfit etc on top of that...

Mind you, if he built a F1 stock car he could go racing with those guys, they get winnings paid as cash and a £4 trophy too. He'd have to develop some unique life skills to settle in with the crowd though. It's not for dafties.
