Cancel culture - they are real people

Pitterpatterpotter · 08/07/2020 18:15

AIBU to hate ‘cancel culture’.
The people who social media suddenly decides are cancelled are real people with feelings, often victims of fake news or speculation.

A friend of mine has been ‘cancelled’ recently and it’s been heartbreaking reading and hearing abusive and bullshit comments about someone I know. In my opinion it’s bullying and it’s a part of social media that I hate at the moment.

It's not just the far left though, it's liberals too. Seen tweets from liberals such as James O'Brien who don't agree that there is such a thing as a culture war and woke.

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 09/07/2020 10:13

It's the dualistic viewpoint that is so damaging.
In or out.
No room for how people actually are which is neither all good nor all bad.

No room for discussion, no room for nuance, no room for people for being real people who get somethings right, somethings wrong, change their mind, hold opposing views at the same time.

It is a puritanical- style movement with no founding precepts apart from mass hysteria and viciousness wrapped up in deception of being 'for the people'. I hope the woke - wake up soon.

Violetparis · 09/07/2020 10:39

Great post myohmy

Flopjustwantscoffee · 09/07/2020 10:46

Theres quite an old stereotype (with some truth) about the right seeking converts to their ranks, and the left seeking out traitors within their ranks. This is true times 100% right now and its going to be massively damaging to the left than the right (admittedly these are both broad often shifting terms)

ImaginaryCat · 09/07/2020 13:24

@Smileyaxolotl1 I probably didn't make that clear, I meant the majority in the room at the time. So while certain opinions and belief sets have currently captured the 'Twittersphere' those voices get to dictate what opinion is correct.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 09/07/2020 14:03

imaginary
Yes I see what you mean now.
It’s definitely true that it’s easy to find yourself in an echo chamber on social media. Since BLM came to the fore I started following quite a few centre-right black activists and I pretty much only see views that I agree with on Twitter now which is almost definitely not good for me.

BentBastard · 09/07/2020 14:10

@PurpleGhost

I find that the only people who are ok with cancelling others are the ones that think their views are absolutely correct so they'd never have to deal with being cancelled.

Although the bar is so high now that really, no one is safe.

We need a like button for posts like this.

There has always seemed to be to be an authoritarian part of the left in the UK and elsewhere and this is using the black lives matter movement as an excuse.

Agree that you should not be targeting anyone based on their husband/wives' politics. We don't target any of Boris's mistresses for example.

AryaStarkWolf · 09/07/2020 14:23

@Violetparis

I'm on the left and can't bear it either, think it's nasty and ridiculous. It's also very damaging to left/liberal politics.
Yep same here
PablosHoney · 09/07/2020 14:32

What does it mean??

BlooperReel · 09/07/2020 14:35

Cancel culture is toxic, vscious bullying, equally I despise that so many feel they ahve to prostrate themselves and beg forgiveness for any perceived transgression to try and avoid falling victim to the Twitter mobs.

More often than not its women, who apparently can have no independent thought or feeling of their own anymore unless its sanctioned by leftwing puritans. What's hapening to Jodie Comer at the moment is appalling.

PablosHoney · 09/07/2020 14:37

What is being cancelled?

BentBastard · 09/07/2020 14:41

@PablosHoney

What is being cancelled?

People are being "cancelled". It basically means them getting no platformed, they're work being boycotted (or them being sacked if they're employed). They're whole
Life going viral over social media for them to get abused and threatened.

That sort of thing.

Apologies for the double
Post and wrong use of they're (which was sodding autocorrect not me!)

AngryPancake · 09/07/2020 14:43

I don’t even understand what this ridiculous turn of phrase is supposed to be? How can you cancel a person? It’s not an order or an arrangement.

If it means just ignoring someone and it going back to the “oh come on guys everyone ignore Dan when he comes in the room!”
Kind of thing then it’s a bit pathetic because presumably the people involved aren’t all 12.

Otherwise maybe people need to stop giving so much shots about social media.

PablosHoney · 09/07/2020 14:43

Ahh I see, that’s appalling! Thanks for explaining.

orangesandapplesandpearsohmy · 09/07/2020 14:45

'I agree and it's why the removal of Katie Hopkins from Twitter was worrying.'

MASSIVELY DISagree on KH - she broke the rules of the site with her hate filled, tabloid bait and therefore they kicked her off. She's free to air her views on any street corner and those who want to go and see her can do so.

Uraflutteringcunt · 09/07/2020 14:47

Cancel = condemn, vilify, erase and bully a person who disagrees with you.

I’m not down with peer pressure so I won’t be cancelling anyone.

KarenMcKaren · 09/07/2020 14:49

The woke search for things to be offended by and when that fails they search for things to be offended by on behalf of others. Their passive aggressive wail of #bekind means nothing, they don't care about being kind, they care about being in control. They don't want to build inner resilience, knowledge and strength. They want the world to change for them. They want people to fall in to line and follow their narrative. Or failing that then to simply shut them up. The people foolish enough to be part of that will soon learn that their time will come and they will be cancelled too. If you stand up to them they either block you and try and dox you, or their heads explode with an overload of rage and 'hurty' feelings. Keep on poking the woke I say. Help them deal with the real world. It's the kindest thing to do 🙂

MrsTribbiani · 09/07/2020 14:51

I’ve found the ‘cancel culture’ terrifying, right from when universities started ‘no platform -ing’ people.

Universities.

Cancelling DEBATE.

Terrifying.

SharonasCorona · 09/07/2020 14:56

Apparently Jodie Comer has been cancelled today.

Cancelled from what? Twitter users questioning her choice of boyfriend (which I don’t agree with) doesn’t mean she has been cancelled.

If you’re using hyperbole regarding Jodie Cromer then I doubt what you’re saying about your friend is too as well OP.

Hingeandbracket · 09/07/2020 15:00

Cancel culture is a wank name for a wank phenomenon.

The problem with that is all the other people who regularly break "the rules" of twitter and are ignored. Trump is one, but there are plenty of others.
