I just messed up a job interview

I just really messed up a job interview for a job I really wanted by panicking when they threw me a curve ball question. I should have anticipated it, but I didn’t and although I corrected my (fairly catastrophically) wrong answer at the end, I feel like I can’t stop kicking myself.

My partner says I need to let it go and just be prepared for that question next time, but I can’t stop fretting.

It was my absolutely ideal job too.

I guess I know IABU because it’s done now.

Adding a comment just to see if you get the job. I bet you do! I'm assuming it was a webcam interview too. They're always tough. Sounds like you held your nerve well. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about it, and at least you corrected your answer at the end so they are aware that you did know the answer. They will also take in to account the fact you are nervous.

So many people balls up interviews.

My most recent job interview, I could barely speak and I just explained at the end that I was so sorry but I get really nervous in interviews, and they somehow gave me the job. I couldn't believe it. So you never know!!

Good luck!

Just to update - they emailed today. Didn’t get it 😢

Ah well, dust off and start again I guess.

Thanks for all the replies.

Chalk it up to experience, you'll get there!

Littlemeadow123 · 09/07/2020 18:15

Sorry to hear that.

Everything happens for a reason. It must be because there is a better job out there for you.

MaggieAndHopey · 09/07/2020 18:25

Sorry CathyTre. Hope you find the right job soon.

CathyTre · 09/07/2020 18:43

They’ve said to get in touch if I want feedback. I feel like I should but I feel a bit anxious about it.

Oh sorry OP. This is going to be me tomorrow! I had a perfect interview on Weds but spectacularly messed up one question. I am so cross with myself. There are certain rules to know and I wasnt e
expecting to have to recite them so I knew the larger groupings. So annoying as I should have just learnt them by heart. It is the only thing I got wrong.

Hope you find something else you want soon.

Whitepriv · 09/07/2020 18:53

@CathyTre I interview a lot of people and that genuinely wouldn’t bother me, especially as you knew the answer and corrected at the end. Everyone expects nerves at interview stage 👍

I understand your reluctance - I would feel the same. You might end up with some generic feedback anyway, but it could be something that reassures you - if there was someone else with more experience for example (or even an internal hire, though they prob wouldn't admit that). They definitely won't say anything that will upset you - it'll either be useful, or confirm what you already suspect, or just be bleh.

Sorry, maybe not that helpful a response!

MaggieAndHopey · 09/07/2020 19:03

Good luck @FilthyforFirth. I hope you're wrong!

Mummyshark2019 · 09/07/2020 21:49

I don't think everything will hinge on one answer. Let's just see what they say tomorrow. Fingers crossed. X

Mummyshark2019 · 09/07/2020 21:50

Sorry! Just seen your update. Deffo ask for feedback.

PaperMonster · 11/07/2020 07:02

@CathyTre - been looking out for an update but missed it! So sorry to hear that you didn’t get the job. Fingers crossed something with your name on turns up soon. (I didn’t get mine either!) xxx
