DIY/Home Improvement Advice - WIBU? Boring thread (sorry)

My DH and I live in a bit of a money pit but it’s a nice house and we’re getting stuff done slowly.

We have 2 DS - 2yo and 7yo

Our bathroom is crappy but we can’t afford a new one for a few years. However it needs some works done to make the floor watertight as the grout is degrading.

I want to remove the mastic and replace it, fill the grout lines and put down vinyl, new bath panel and mastic round the whole floor. Id also paint the bathroom ceiling and the tiles and add a few bits and bobs like new towel rail and shelf.

We also need to repaint the kitchen ceiling after a leak.

We have had a quote for the work - prob around £800 including materials and new fixings.

I want to do it myself. I like DIY, am ok at it and none of these jobs are especially difficult I don’t think.

DH wants to pay someone else to do it.

YABU - Pay a tradesman

YANBU - you could and should do it yourself.

Sorry for boring thread Blush

Def sounds like something you can do

finished31 · 08/07/2020 15:58

Do it yourself....it's not like you are turning water off or drilling.

£800 is a lot of money and it cost a fraction of that.

Oooh! Yay!! Not a drip feed but FIL is super handy and on hand for advice and assistance too so this feels really doable to me...

£800 is loads. I'd def give it a go yourself and if you mess it up, then get a professional in to fix (I'm a tradesmans nightmare Grin )!

That’s what I think.

I would do everything apart from fitting the vinyl.

It is a pain and will end in divorce.

Darkestseasonofall · 08/07/2020 16:03

I'd probably let DH pay someone, unless you're both furloughed, simply because it'll take you a week to do it whilst looking after small dc, whereas a trade can have it done within a day.

BertieDrapper · 08/07/2020 16:03

I would def do those jobs myself. And I mean by myself... no help from DH as he'd just get in my way 🤣
If you are unsure about any of it, there will be a YouTube tutorial somewhere!

MuchTooTired · 08/07/2020 16:06

I’d definitely say do it yourself including the vinyl which is easy to put down. YouTube is your friend!

Lolz - this has been a thought but FIL will help...

We aren’t furloughed but toddler has childcare with a CM and older DS wouldn’t be hard to distract - I’d just ask him to help and he’d be off.

To the posters saying YouTube is my friend... this is why I think I’m able... it all looks so easy when they do it...

Right - I’m making a list and I’m doing it! I don’t work Fridays so could start then.

I laid vinyl as I hated the bathroom tiles. I watched a few videos and made sure my knives were sharp. I paid £60 for it. You can motivate up a bathroom for a fraction of £800.

Dessicator · 08/07/2020 16:36

Meant titivate not motivate

Merryoldgoat · 08/07/2020 18:16

Thanks all - ordered vinyl, equipment, a few fixtures and a bath panel for a total of £250

Time to get cracking.
