universal credit question

Internshipquestion · 08/07/2020 12:33

Hi,

So I will be training as a teacher from September, the wage isn't that high, so I am eligible for universal credit whilst working.

I live alone with my young child, so will get help with housing and childcare. Due to the high cost of childcare things will still be tight with this help.

My dad has kindly offered to gift me money each month to help with living costs. However, I am unsure if this will clash with UC, or is my dad allowed to gift me money each month to help with living costs, if its okay is there a maximum amount or not.

thanks!

Are you eligible for student loans?

Internshipquestion · 08/07/2020 12:36

I'm not doing a route where I get student loans, its salaried from day 1 on the unqualified teacher pay scale.

I think technically it counts as income. Be careful.

Internshipquestion · 08/07/2020 12:40

theres no clear guidance on it, so it's really hard to know. I dont want to commit benefit fraud, but the extra money will be really useful if i can have it without causing problems

would it only count if it made saving over 6k?

Money from your father would be classed as 'voluntary payments' and would be ignored.

I'll see if I can find a link for you to reference it.

Here you go

AnotherEmma · 08/07/2020 12:47

PS It wouldn't be counted as income but if you are saving some then you would need to update on increases to your savings if they go over £6k.

Internshipquestion · 08/07/2020 12:48

thank you!! @AnotherEmma its unlikely to make my savings go over 6k so i think it should be fine!

Even if your savings did go over £6k, you would still get UC, it's just that the amount might be reduced slightly.
