To move up north for a big but cheap house!

Just that really. I l live in Hertfordshire- south east and very expensive part of Uk. Budget is around £270,000 and around here that will get me a small 2 bed/ poss 3 bed. But have looked at properties in York which I know is lovely and the will get me a 4/5 bed with massive garden, playroom, utility etc!

Has anyone on here moved far from friends and family to get more value for money on a house? did you regret? I have a 2 year old so obviously it would be hard to not see grandparents and friends but other that that not sure what I would miss! I also work from home so wouldn't need to worry about that.

We both moved up north from south London..Looked at York , been going there at least twice a year, beautiful place..We live in Barnsley now, after renting first, the walks and views are amazing, our neighbours are lovely and made us welcome from day one.Barnsley has around 13 districts,
The people are really friendly and we love it.

Yes, moved from north london to the east midlands.
Bought a bigger house with lots left over.
However unless for me it's harder to find a good paying job. The salary are less here

It’s not the best place for sarcasm, being an anonymous messaging platform where no tone or intonation can be detected.

I live not a million miles from York and sorry, but I am massively struggling to believe you'd get that in a semi decent part of York.

York is lovely, you are right, but it is also freezing cold in winter in a way surrounding areas are not, and the city centre has a nasty underbelly after dark. Loads of tough bouncers on the pubs etc.

claireb707 · 09/07/2020 20:33

Er funnily enough yes not sure who you could possibly mean though 🤔🙄

Try very hard.

I’m well into the North and £270k wouldn’t get you a flat here, unless it was in a really rough part.

vickimum · 09/07/2020 20:42

We moved from London to Derbyshire when our son was very young as we were attracted by what we could get for our money there. We went from a tiny 2 bed flat to a huge barn conversion, with 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a guest annexe, huge garden and double garage. Unfortunately we just never found a group of friends there where we felt we fitted in, so we moved to the Cotswolds to a tiny cottage. We’ve never been happier to be quite honest. We love our life here. A larger house doesn’t necessarily tick all of the boxes.

Just seen it's Driffield. Driffield is not York, very different.

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/07/2020 20:46

ShellsAndSunrises where on earth are you?

IusedToBeYoung · 09/07/2020 20:50

We moved just an hour north ish of herts and best thing we ever did. Main reason was needing more house for less money (family of 5 in a small 3 bed now in a large 5 bed for not a large amount more). We actually chose a nicer area as we have school age kids but if that wasnt an issue we could have got even cheaper just 10 minutes away! So much happier now we are not all on top of each other. Of course we miss family being around the corner, but in reality we didn't see each other as much as we'd like as life was too busy. We have a wonderful network up here now and enough room for family to stay when they do visit so more quality time rather than a quick cuppa. Didn't affect work though for us and only added 20 mins on to london commute which we only do occasionally for work so not a great issue. Wish we'd done it years ago!

PurpleFlower1983 · 09/07/2020 20:50

£270,000 won’t get you much in York! How far out of town are you going? YANBU though! It’s great up North!

WhipMaWhopMa · 09/07/2020 20:54

What on Earth are you talking about? York centre is pretty mild. I grew up in S. Yorkshire (in a very, very expensive and "posh" bit where you might be able to buy a 1-bed flat for £270k), and it snowed a lot there. I've not seen proper snow in York since about 2011.

Anyway, I do agree that it's rough on Friday and Saturday nights in town. Lots of stag and hen parties from Newcastle come to invade. A bit like the Vikings all over again.

DameXanaduBramble · 09/07/2020 21:02

Northerners are known for their —honesty— rudeness disguised as ‘honesty’.

‘I say what I like and I like what I bloody well say’. ‘Take me as you find me‘. Both thinly disguised as meaning you’re really quite up your own arse.

There, fixed it for you.

AriadneCrete · 09/07/2020 21:02

I don’t know why people are getting offended about the “acquired taste” comment. For someone that’s lived their whole life in the south, it is an acquired taste. I would say the same of the south too!

I bet if someone said where I live (London) is an acquired taste (which it is), people wouldn’t have been so defensive!

DameXanaduBramble · 09/07/2020 21:02

Strike fail but you get the gist.

DameXanaduBramble · 09/07/2020 21:04

Northerners are defensive because in the whole they have a huge chip about not being from the south.

Rosehip10 · 09/07/2020 21:05

why does every thead on "the north" always have patronising people using the term "oop north" - especially people who have moved, e.g

"I moved oop north from that there London, and have never regretted it"

sussexoldspot · 09/07/2020 21:07

I'm from Grimsby, live in Sussex and can say quite emphatically that my taste for the South has taken some acquiring. I'd be back up North like a shot, Yorkshire's a wonderful part of the world (don't tell any Grimberians I said that)

HairyToity · 09/07/2020 21:09

I live in North East Wales, our house cost us 270k in a rural village and its lovely and spacious... Both sets of parents live within half an hour of us though..... One of the mums at my son's school moved up here from Kent for her husband's job, and her parents sold up and followed within 18 months. They wanted the cash from their home down south to retire on.

I'd consider Shropshire too.
