New workplace scheme

Just seen a new work place scheme by the government where they will pay employers to employ young people age 16 to 24. This is obviously to help prevent unemployment in that category.
AIBU to think this is bad news for anyone not in that age group? As it will cause employers to just take on/have a preference for that age group? My DH has just been made redundant we are in our 30s we have a mortgage and two young children to feed. I'm already worried about how he is going to find another job and now I am more worried.

I think it depends on the industry but will it more affect entry level jobs as most people in that age bracket will not have the experience/skills for the middle range or senior roles more suited to people further along in their careers? But I suppose it depends what jobs you’re looking at.

That's a better way of looking at it thank you @Sparklesocks. DH was in a management job but his industry isn't doing so well at the moment so not likely to find a job in it. Obviously not ideal and he is mainly looking for management roles but is happy to do a lower paid job as long as it pays the bills.

Best of luck to him. I’ve been made redundant in the past so I know how insecure it makes you feel - but I’m sure he’ll get something else. Maybe something better! And chances are the new scheme will take a while to be up and running so I’m sure he will have found something by then.

The new scheme is geared towards the age group that was worst hit by the pandemic job-wise. I feel sorry for them as they have their whole life in front of them. They've had a lot taken away from them e.g. clubbing.

YABU. This is more aimed at encouraging employees to continue offering entry level positions, usually with training involved like traineeships, grad schemes, entry level jobs etc. Nobody is going to pick a kid straight out of university for a management role because of £1000.
