Deficiencies post birth/breastfeeding?

I have been suffering with insomnia, severe fatigue, weakness, numbness, diarrhoea etc since baby's birth ten weeks ago. I have MS so the doctors just assume its all to do with that and ignore me because my bloods are ok. But I am certain i am low in something. What is logical to be low in at this stage? I suspect B12. Anyone else have this? The only thing that eases it is feeding less and giving formula, and i'm trying to avoid this but it's breaking me.

Did you use gas and air at the birth? It can delete B12. Just ask your GP to check again, and get a copy of the results too as something may well be borderline.

Are you taking a calcium supplement? How was your iron level post birth?

How was your birth? Insomnia is linked with birth trauma and lack of sleep makes it more difficult to process that trauma.

Has your vitamin D been checked? Low vitamin D is linked to MS.

I'm guessing you've had your iron levels checked, but did they check your iron stores (ferritin)? They can be low whilst your iron levels are normal. Ask for the actual results as levels on the low side (sub-clinical) can make you feel awful, even if technically in range. Low iron stores can make your hair fall out, I also slept terribly when mine were low and had no energy. Also found breastfeeding depleting.

Are you still taking a pregnancy/breastfeeding supplement? It might help.

Iron looks normal but I had it tested a month ago, might well have plummeted by now.. Yes I did have gas and air. I'm taking a multivitamin but i have absorption problems so maybe it's not cutting it..

Are you taking breastfeeding supplements?

I found the pregnacare ones good and boosted my system a bit. Especially if I didn't have time to eat or eat properly

Also make sure you are getting alot of fluid. Sounds odd but lack of fluid does.werid things to a tired and exhausted mind

You need to know your actual test results and the ranges not if they are "ok".

Also if you are low in any vitamin and/or mineral you need to take a supplement for that particular deficiency not a multivitamin. So for example if your iron levels are too low you need to take an iron supplement that will have more iron in it then what you get in a multivitamin.

Have you had a blood test - after having my baby I felt the same and had an overactive thyroid have you had that checked?

Cornberry · 08/07/2020 08:32

They did check my thyroid and it was normal. Had lots of blood tests. The thing is I know they are often not very accurate, which is why I am asking. I am taking a multivitamin.
