To think it's a miracle the British Army ever gets any recruits

No wonder the Army is so under strength.

It has been DS1's dream to be an Army Officer since he was about 11yo. He wasn't particularly academic and had to work really hard to get the ALevel grades needed to make an application to Sandhurst.

He made his application at the end of 2018 while was still at school. There was endless toing and froing over pieces of information they were "waiting" for but that he had already sent and that they had acknowledged.

He finally got to the medical stage in June 2018 and was deferred because of very minor hearing impairment. He met the standard but they wanted the cause investigated. Saw a consultant in Sept 2018 who took 2 months to advise him that he was considered unfit for service, despite having met all their published standards.

He appealed that, which took another 5 months but he was eventually successful. And given a date in June 2020 for initial selection, which of course was cancelled (OK, that one isn't their fault).

They restarted selection on 1 June and he was promised a new date "within 10 days" but he's just finally, after very many phone calls received a date in September. However as his medical is now 12 months old, he has to do another one so he's back to square one.

If he was even a tiny bit less committed to this he'd have given up long ago and meantime, it must have cost the taxpayer a fortune, multiple trips to Wiltshire by train to see various doctors. And still he's no closer to getting in and they are no closer to successfully recruiting.

Unbelievable isn't it op.

My niece is in the army and I've spent years watching in disbelief.

She would appear home unexpectedly for the weekend. Given last minute leave as off on Exercise Monday, Monday comes, it's cancelled.

Huge preparation for trip to Canada, out there two weeks and sent back.

Training for three month tour, tour cancelled.

Put on non changeable shift pattern, changes the next week.

Holidays booked, leave cancelled.

Promotions promised, then cancelled.

Move her to Wales, move her back again. Need her in Edinburgh, relocate her to Yorkshire.

We have spent years joking at the utter chaos coming from those who are the most disciplined and highly trained.

The system itself is hideously flawed, and the staff are usually temporary workers for whom their is no comeback if there is a delay in processing applications. My son is in exactly the same place, even after serving in reserves all through uni

Yes! He gets a named contact and no one else can possibly help him, then they disappear, no one tells him they've left, then when he does realise everything's gone quiet it takes ages for them to tell him who the new contact is.

My DH was rejected from the RAF for hearing.

Has your DS tried the Royal Navy?

YgritteSnow · 07/07/2020 16:20

I'm ex army. If I had my time again I would have joined the Navy.

okiedokieme · 07/07/2020 16:21

Not my experience at all. RN not army. Everything has been very professional and smooth. Very happy dc but it's via the technical degree route so maybe less competitive?

Waveysnail · 07/07/2020 16:22

I'd go RAF over army

Etinox · 07/07/2020 16:23

Apparently the recruitment is outsourced. It’s very chaotic.

BanburyBun · 07/07/2020 16:23

I identify with so much of what you said! It took my son 18months to get from application form to Catterick for basic training. Now that he is through training (which was very well organised to be fair) his schedule seems to change every other day...he’s back and forth between home and base continually. I just hope the training and transfers promised materialise as promised...

Inthebelljar · 07/07/2020 16:24

DP is in the RAF. Much better organisation, people, and processes. They’re very understanding and helpful. Can’t recall any time his leave has ever been cancelled.

UltimateWednesday · 07/07/2020 16:31

Yes, I like to think it's because this part is not actually run by the Army, it's outsourced to CAPITA

The Navy's hearing standard is higher than the Army's

Our son was stuck in a posting that didn't 'do anything'.
It was because the Corps was full of NCOs with only 2 or 3 Years left and they wanted a quiet life. They got their way but the soldiers learned nothing for 2 years.
