To not want to report this person for welfare fraud

I've recently been made awake that a friend of mine is claiming a payment that they shouldn't be claiming and aren't really entitled to. The person told me themselves, almost bragging to me.

Although I think what they are doing is shitty and I don't agree with it at all (the smugness made it all the more annoying) I don't feel like it's my place to rat them out. I confided in another friend, and without giving them details of who, they believe it is my place and that I should report it.

My issue is, I feel like if I do report them then it's obvious it was me because they told me.. Although the way they were going on they've probably told lots of people. I seriously just don't think it's my place to do that to anyone. I really just wish I didn't know.

Am I obliged to report it or is it none of my business?

Yes, I think YABU and you should be obliged to report it.

TARSCOUT · 07/07/2020 13:41

Just think how.much money would be available to those genuinely in need if people claimed only what they were entitled to. Report them.

ResumetonormalASAP · 07/07/2020 14:10

Report - the money that this person is taking shoult be spent on someone who actually needs it

IndieRo · 07/07/2020 14:15

I would report it OP. I'm in Ireland too and the amount of social welfare fraud is disgusting. I'm not sure if you will have any luck though as I have previously reported the same person a few times and nothing was done about it.

MrsAJ27 · 07/07/2020 14:22

I wouldn't report it. It is your friends business and if she gets caught thats down to her!

RoisinD · 07/07/2020 14:35

Thèy more than likely will be caught. The e350 was given to most who applied without any proper checks. These are being done retrospectively. Previous employer will be contacted and if they just quit without being laid off they will have to pay it all back. Think there are a few who are going to get a shock over the coming months.

Oh right, I didn't know that 😳 I definitly won't be reporting so if that's three case as it's clearly going to bite her in the bum regardless. I've heard there's loads of people refusing to go back to work as their too happy with the 350. Not very wise at all.

not a lot actually when you compare it to tax evasion but its still morally wrong

It's obviously bugging you so dob them in.

Sounds as though it's a bit of a loophole created by a well-meaning government scheme not thought through properly.

But you mention DP - they're not married? then she needs her own income.

They are not married. She had her own income but decided to quit her job in order to claim this benefit that yes, is exactly that you said it sounds like. I think it's annoying because it's a benefit for people actually affected by covid and who need the money to feed themselves and their families, not people who would rather quit their jobs and sit at home. If it was discovered that she quit her job purposely to claim it, her payment would be stopped and I'm pretty sure she would owe the money she has taken back, as she wasn't entitled to claim it.

I'm not going to report it, I still don't think it's up to me to do such a thing and I'm not comfortable doing it to anyone really. But yes it is annoying.

Why would you ever report? Seems childish and petty. No one's in any danger. I'd not even consider reporting.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/07/2020 13:21

I am 100% certain they aren't entitled to it, it's a benefit for people who are out of work due to covid, this person quit their job to claim it because its actually a little more than they were earning. They are fully capable of work and they were not put out of work. They just saw an opportunity and took it

In that case - and since you said they don't need the money to survive - I'd definitely report

And please don't rely on some government "scheme" to catch up with such folk, because too often they simply don't work

formerbabe · 08/07/2020 13:23

No I wouldn't report

I enjoy minding my own business
