Do they think we are stupid

Hi,

this is my first post. I have joined in on some discussions and now I'm starting one.

Please take it lightly, it is only meant in fun but nevertheless I am annoyed so here goes....

Covid19. Yes, we all know about it and boy haven't the TV ads really embraced it to sell us a story.

L'oreal because we are all worth it especially now. Eva Longoria saying she isn't ready for grey hair when it's perfectly obvious she is fully grey :)

Virgin media using child actors I have seen in TV adverts to talk about how they connect schools with children. I find this really annoying. Why couldn't they use real people instead of actors pretending to be teachers. Do they really think Joe public is thick?

Supermarkets using Covid to advertise when they must be making money hand over fist telling us how caring they are.

I think I watch too much televison LOL

Don't most people have grey roots by 45? I have loads of greys at 33. So for me, not really a surprise that she would need to dye her hair.

pictish · 07/07/2020 08:06

Imo the salt and pepper effect is more ageing and scruffy looking than just being fully grey. That’s the stage I’m at at 44.

pictish · 07/07/2020 08:07

sophie agreed. Absolute filth.

chipsandpeas · 07/07/2020 08:30

@EatsShootsAndRuns

Eva Longoria is only 45 so may have a few grey hairs, doubt she's fully grey. What about the similar adverts with Davina (who is actually older than Eva so may have more grey) or Holly?
im 43 and would be fully grey if i didnt dye my hair so can quite believe her advert
Wrongdissection · 07/07/2020 09:13

The Eva Longoria one really irritated me, she’s been advertising for L’Oreal for ages, so surely she should have just been dying her hair with the box anyway during lockdown since she’s been peddling it for years as if she used it!

Wrongdissection · 07/07/2020 09:14

Oh and I’m 37 and have completely white hair. And have done for at least the last 10 years with signs of grey for at least 10 years prior to that.

Haggisfish · 07/07/2020 09:24

Apparently Eva Longoria has been fully grey for year’s and dyes her roots every two weeks.

Haggisfish · 07/07/2020 09:24

Years not year’s

One of the best parenting moves my wife and I made entirely by mistake was not having free to air TV. I didn't like the BBC licencing behaviours so refused to get a licence, so all we had was Netflix/Amazon prime. So all our DDs have ever watched have been on demand with no adds (a lot of Wiggles).

DD1's friends mum was telling me how her son is telling her how much he says 'i want x' or 'i want y'. My daughter has never uttered those words, and I'm sure it's because she's never seen an advert for a toy or anything like it. When I see those ads now I think how pernicious they are and they were a normal part of my life growing up. So yes I agree OP, the ads are appalling and they should be canned. I wonder how many of the issues young children have today are caused or contributed to by the jealousy and avarice those ads are designed to produce.

Ellisandra · 07/07/2020 09:33

I don’t watch much TV - and what I do is mostly streamed, so I don’t see many adverts.

I don’t really care though. A particular advert might not be persuasive for me - but they clearly are for some people. Yes, companies are using Covid to increase sales (sometimes to try to restore them). That means, that an ordinary person like me, who gets paid for managing the packaging orders for L’Oréal (j don’t Grin but as an example) is still getting paid. So I don’t mind companies pushing their products.

Doesn’t matter how many times Persil show people crafting - I don’t care that I haven’t spent lockdown doing that.

Doesn’t matter if companies say, “we’re in this together” - I won’t be more likely to buy from them.

It’s up to the public to have some cynicism and grow their own thick skin.

...
Oh well if that's the case she is exactly the right sort of person to be doing that advert.

Erm, I started going grey in my teens and both of my daughters were the same. I'm totally white haired now at 56 and would definitely have been very grey at 45. Of course you don't see many actresses in their 40's with grey hair. They dye it!

The op is weird though. I wasn't ready to go grey in my 40's either and dyed it. Still had mostly grey hair though underneath all the colour.

knittingaddict · 07/07/2020 16:41

Sorry, bold fail.

Laiste · 07/07/2020 16:46

I get you OP.

We're all treated like idiots by the media, the government, and a lot of the people around us as well to be honest. Thinking they are convincing us they're all cavorting around having a wonderful life by posting on FB. And so many people lap it up.

It's all bollocks. You realise that as you get older. You only know you. If you meet someone who is truly honest - treasure them.

simonisnotme · 07/07/2020 16:58

I loath the toothpaste one where the 'dentist' says the 'white shinning armour' starts to wear away and the 'under layer' shows through
its utter bollocks the enamel on your teeth cant frigging wear away Angry

Gazelda · 07/07/2020 17:05

I understood that advertisers block booked a certain number of slots in advance to get the best deal.
So Sainsbo's probably had a load booked and thought it might look crass if they were pushing tinned toms or easy shopping experiences. So they had to shoot some ads at short notice that reflected the reality of the current supermarket world.

knittingaddict · 07/07/2020 17:52

Yes, it can

Oliversmumsarmy · 07/07/2020 18:03

I hate all the “we’re in this together” ads. Ooooh it was hard but we all stayed indoors and did lots of cooking and we got through it together

Well if we had all stayed in and did some cooking why aren’t our infection rates zero?

Who comes up with those Nationwide adverts? They are the most cringe fest awful things and am sure they can’t be doing the bank any good.
