AIBU to ask buyers to pay for Chancel liability insurance?

Selling house and buyer's solicitors have said that there may be a liability on thour house for Chancel repair and have asked us to pay £125 to cover cost of indemnity insurance for our buyers. AIBU to think the buyers should pay for Chancel repair insurance themselves as it would be for their benefit?

We paid £19+VAT for a detached house...

Buyer pays, and it should be less than £125. The chances of you needing to claim are very remote but I would get it if you have had a positive chancel search - worth checking, as some lenders ask for chancel insurance regardless and rely on solicitors doing this search. Basically if the property is nowhere near a church, you are unlikely to need it.

My son paid that insurance for his flat he bought a year ago.
It seems to have been £5.03!!!!!

Nothing to do with location. It's about whether the property was historically part of the estate owned by the lay rector of a parish.

Jumping on an old thread here, but I’ve just been quoted by my solicitor “The one time premium fee is £165.00 and there would be a procurement and activation fee of £48.00”

did anyone not purchase via solicitor and go elsewhere by themselves ?

The idea of potentially having to pay thousands to the church at some random point in the future might be a bit of a scare for many buyers. I'd say it's a small price for the seller to pay to reassure them.

It is a good while back however, I think we DID purchase from the solicitor. I do remember there were two options. One covered us. The second covered the property in perpetuity. The figures were possibly more than you quote though not significantly. We were moving very fast as there was a completion deadline from the vendor (a company relocating staff) and we had a bit of a bargain. In the midst of spending money hand over fist (or so it seems when moving!) we did not shop around.
