Firstly, I am posting for traffic as I need a quick answer.

I have been offered a TA position in a primary school. What does the pay £21,000 FTE mean?

Does it mean I will only be paid for term time, divided by the 12 months?

Whats the difference between pro-rota and FTE? Are they the same?

FTE is full time equivalent so that's the salary if the position is full time.

If it's not full time the salary is prorated to however many hours you'll be working.

Prorata means reducing the salary to the proportion of hours.

So if you're only doing 20 hours you can find out what you'll be paid using an online prorata calculator

My hours are full time I think, 08:30 until 4:30, five days a week. Does that change things?

Its normal to list it like this as some people ask to work PT so even thought it's advertised as FT, they specify that if it was to be offered PT, it would be prorata.

I would expect the salary to be worked out based on term time only and then spread across the year. If they've offered you the job, ask them what the pro rated amount is and if it's annualised.

I’m a teacher so used to recruitment in this way.

It means you need to reduce the pay by around 3/4 as you will actually only work 39 weeks a year rather than 52. It may then need reducing further if you only work 32 hours (common for TA’s) rather than the 37.5 or 40 the advertisers salary is based on.

I think that if if it’s £21, 000 and you will be working 39 weeks not 52 weeks then that’s about 70% so that’s about £15,000 ish.

Obviously you then need to take off tax, National insurance etc so take home pay must be about £1000?

(Please check these figures - they’re just a rough calculation !)

If you are working 39 weeks you will be paid 39 weeks plus holiday as you have to be paid it as you aren't allowed to take it in term time so you will actually be paid for something like 43 weeks or whatever.

When I worked as a TA I was paid for 37.5 hours a week 43 weeks a year (39 weeks of term time plus 4 weeks holiday), my salary was then split into 12 equal monthly payments.

As a TA, on a FTE salary of about that, I was bringing home around 950 every month if that helps. :)
