To wonder when all the cars on our roads turned monochrome?!

I was recently flamed by some colleagues for considering buying a red car. I was told "you won't get let out at junctions", "people will automatically think you're having a mid-life crisis", "you'll get gobbed on by passers-by" etc ...

It got me thinking - when did we drain the colour out of car choices? Is this an envy thing, a "tall poppy" cut-down?

For reference yes, it is a 4-seater sports coupe, but there aren't many of the type I want to buy, and especially fewer with a manual gearbox. The one I found is in post-box colour red.

My point is, literally every single person in that group chat, male and female, has a monochrome car. Three "gunmetal grey", two black, one white.

My neighbours all to a fault seem to have grey or black. One has a blue people carrier and I love them for it, it's so good to see some actual colour on the street.

Yes this is trivial, yes I'm sure someone will be along to tell me about their yellow Cinquecento they once owned, or their current forest green Discovery or whatever. If so, you're of my thinking and this post is not to you.

I'm just curious - is it a PCP thing, as in, if you have to hand it back, does resale count in terms of having business grey colours?

I go to supermarket car parks in my bright blue estate car and I notice the stares, it's quite amusing - its as if people take umbrage to the existence of the thing. Everywhere else? Is a sea of grey, silver, black, more black, and a few white Kias or whatever was in vogue a few years back.

AIBU to wonder why people don't buy colourful cars any more? Would you automatically think "knob" if you saw a person in a red coupe?

I know somebody who drives a car in poo brown Grin
They really wanted a blue one but the dealer offered them such a great deal on it, they felt it would be foolish not to buy it.
He says it's always easy to find in a car park, as hardly anybody else drives one that colour.

MulticolourMophead · 06/07/2020 20:36

The only reason my current car is black, is because it was the best car available in my budget. As it's a second hand car, there was no other colour choices available.

Since I don't have a budget that stretches to a new car, I therefore can't choose the colour.

If I did have the money, I fancy a bright metallic blue. Some colour, in any case.

KingOfDogShite · 06/07/2020 20:38

My cars are bright red and bright blue. Both of my neighbours have a red car too.

I find everything grey seriously dull.

Praiseyou · 06/07/2020 20:41

The car I have was only available in black, white, silver or grey.

Alaimo · 06/07/2020 20:43

I have a red fiesta. It's second hand, but I think the red ones are/were cheapest, because I see lots of them around. Mostly from around the same time as well (2015ish).

I did test drive a metallic brown Fiesta as well. It was actually marginally cheaper, but while I am willing to put up with most colours, in the end I decided not to buy it because I hated the colour so much...

lifestooshort123 · 06/07/2020 20:44

yes - always wonder who buys cars in “poo brown
Or metallic bogey green...

I didn't choose the red car, my previous one got written off week 2 into lockdown and I needed a car. Mechanic had this one, looked good (I trust him) and now it's mine.
nb I'm not precious about cars

Boomclaps · 06/07/2020 21:55

My first car I bought myself was a bright red golf. After that all neutral, but not because I wanted neutral just because I buy used and run my card until they die and so I never have time to browse and it’s always a panic to find and buy

grumpymummy72 · 06/07/2020 22:14

I've got a bright red mini convertible and DH has a bright blue Qashqai. Shrinking violets we are not. Love them both and don't miss our previous silver/grey cars at all, particularly in car parks.

grumpymummy72 · 06/07/2020 22:18

And both mine second hand/pre-registered.

Runnerduck34 · 06/07/2020 22:28

I love red cars, its statistically proven that brightly coloured cars are involved in less accidents and its thought be be because they are more visible.
Fashions in car colours come and go, I currently have a white car and before that I had a black car but that was because of availability more than anything else!! If you can, pick a colour you love , unless its really wacky which might affect resale value, just go for it!

crimsonlake · 06/07/2020 22:30

This monochrome trend has actually been going on for several years. I have always had blue or red cars, must say it makes it easier to find in car parks.

Badgerstmary · 06/07/2020 22:35

I’ve noticed over the years car colours have become more & more bland but I enjoy bright cars. My current car is bright yellow, extremely easy to find in a carpark & reminds me of the sun, & sandy beaches. My last car was Shrek green, again, easy to find. Ds’s car is grey again though, but to be fair he wanted blue, but there were none available.

NoMoreMrNiceGaius · 06/07/2020 22:37

We really wanted a different color when we bought the car but it cost a ridiculous amount extra, I dont remember exactly how much but I think around 4-5000 euros. So that might have something to do with it? The standard colors when you get a new car are all the ones that have no personality and will appeal to as many people as possible, like the magnolia walls.

Educationwhateducation · 06/07/2020 22:40

I have a metallic blue Focus and DH has a red Qashqui Smile

Toothsil · 06/07/2020 22:40

I have a brightish blue car. DH has a midnight blue, purely because that was the colour available in what he needed at the time. We've had mid blue, burgundy, white, black, grey, brighter red - it's all just depended on what was available at the time that suited our needs.

LuckyMarmiteLover · 06/07/2020 22:46

My mini convertible is Caribbean Aqua - most definitely not drab monochrome.

EasterIssland · 06/07/2020 22:50

I had a light green-blue hatchback. When baby came I wanted a suv in red. The suv I wanted was 120miles away in red. Couldn’t justify it so went for white as it was in my town.

Most of my friends and family in Spain have it in grey.

bumblingbovine49 · 06/07/2020 22:55

I've had two red cars, one black, one turquoise,.one aubergine colour and one grey/ silver ( current one).

I miss the really colourful cars you got.in the 70a and 80s.

mrwalkensir · 06/07/2020 22:58

FudgeBrownie2019 our youngest is also a keen yellow car player...and we were discussing the sad lack of colourful cars yesterday GinDaddyRedux. We have one that is bright red, and one that is bright safety orange. Grey and dark blues can be lovely, but almost invisible on busy motorways in dodgy weather

Welcometothe36to40Box · 06/07/2020 23:01

Red cars statistically have more accidents. This has been proven year after year
