Fucking cat (not mine) outside howling in the wind. Should I bring it in? Yes or no?

Woke up and went to get a cup of tea. I can hear there's a cat outside howling and it's wild out there. Been howling for attached least the 10 minutes I've stood here. I'm in a second floor apartment, I bloody hate animal owning culture, I have no real means to care for a cat. But it's howling. No other animal noise so it's not mating or anything, just sounds upset, really horrible.
I'm thinking I could empty a box, put a picnic blanket in it and put the cat in there in the bathroom for the night. Should I? YANBU yes just get the damn cat already, YABU no leave it be it's probably ok. For reference I've lived here five years and never heard a cat yowling outside before.

Completely agree with Greytexpectations.

Howling/yowling cats do not need to be rescued! They are looking for mates or fighting.

pandafunfactory · 05/07/2020 10:16

@RyanBergarasTeeth what are you doing with two cats in heat? Neuter your pets!

FromDespairToHere · 05/07/2020 10:51

One of mine yowls. It's just the way he miaows. I don't have a catflap and there have been occasions when he's not come in before I've gone to bed and then he yowls to come in in the early hours. Leave it, op, it's just being a cat.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 05/07/2020 11:07

I always come on these threads in hopes of seeing a cat pic or 2. I know that this is not in the spirit of this particular thread 😬.

MashedPotatoBrainz · 05/07/2020 11:13

I think you only really hear one cat yowling if they're fighting. Normally only the dominant cat. The other one is usually silently going 'oh fuck, oh fuck oh fuck' while pretending it's not there.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 05/07/2020 11:19

I'd go down and check it out to see if he/she is injured or in pain.
If he is still hanging around after a day or so, maybe take to a vets so they can see if he is microchipped.
If not microchipped, look for posters or local social media posts for missing cat.

It's tough, I have a cat who is basically feral! I'm sure my neighbours think I'm terrible when he stays out all night wind or rain but the bastard literally won't come in unless he's ready to and often pisses off for multiple days at a time.

Every few weeks he decides he wants a cuddle for the evening and will come in. Then it's straight off out again and we don't see him for God knows how long. It used to worry me when the weather was bad but I'm just used to it now. He lives by his own rules, there's just no changing him.

WildfirePonie · 05/07/2020 11:28

Just leave it OP, it might start marking your flat if you bring it in. You do not want that!

bitofasleuth · 05/07/2020 11:41

My cat is elderly and has dementia. She wakes us up several times in the night by yelling. She then demands to go out, where she paces up and down the garden yowling her head off. We try everything we can, but nothing will settle her. Once she's searched the garden for her imaginary kittens she will come back in again.

So if you are my neighbour, I apologise.

Same here - I had one of my neighbours laughingly tell me she feeds my (scrawny-looking, greedy, ancient cat) tuna because she feels sorry for him. He’s on a special diet, she could have killed him. I absolutely guarantee that her pity and love for my cat would have stopped short of paying for the vet bills if she’d made him ill. She knew he was my cat too and never asked if it was ok. I blame Facebook, everyone wants to show off about how much the love animals instead of just leaving them the fuck alone.
Millicent10 · 05/07/2020 12:12

I’ve got 3xcats and my advice would be if the cat looks healthy (good weight, good coat) and has no injuries just ignore and it will go home. A cat howling outside doesn’t mean that it is ill or that it hasn’t got a decent home.

CloudyGladys · 05/07/2020 13:12

Are you sure it was a cat and not a fox?

If it happens again tonight, just ignore it - put the radio on if it helps.

PotholeParadise · 05/07/2020 13:29

The problem may have been that it wasn't a fucking cat, but an entire tom who dearly wanted to be a fucking cat. Grin

I had a lot of yowling outside from entire toms this year because my kitten's neutering qppointment had to be postponed due to lockdown. She promptly reached sexual maturity and started going into season.

Elieza · 05/07/2020 13:40

Did you find the cat OP? Was it injured or did it bog off smarting when you arrived? Grin

styleseeker72 · 05/07/2020 13:52

This is destiny, OP. You're meant to have this cat. Grin

RyanBergarasTeeth · 05/07/2020 14:46

@pandafunfactory maybe i dont want them spayed? They are pure bred bengals and house cats with the potential to breed purebreds.

pandafunfactory · 05/07/2020 14:51

Yup that's what the world needs, more expensive kittens.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 05/07/2020 15:02

Well if we are playing that game we dont actually need cats at all full stop.

pandafunfactory · 05/07/2020 15:06

It's not a game. As the people who spend time rescuing cats and kittens from harm will tell you.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 05/07/2020 15:26

The problem is with people with non purebreds allowing theirs out to breed ferrals and abandoning them. We have rescued a load of strays one last week in a bad way we shipped off to the vets where its now waiting to be adopted. The problem is not with purebreds being bred.

Muppetry76 · 05/07/2020 18:40

My cat is a furry fucker. Was out all night in the howling wind and rain, and I heard him yowling at asshole o'clock. He has free access to the house via catflap and his food bowl is filled at bedtime. Asshole.

Did you investigate OP?
