Rat problem!

A couple of months ago we heard a constant scuffling, scratching sound above the living room celing. Called out pest control, he ripped up some floorboards in the bedroom above and we were told rats are getting into the cavity wall. The chap caught a couple and filled any obvious entry points with wire wool and cement. The problem went away for a while but the buggers are back, this time above the kitchen ceiling. We are mid terrace and kitchen is an single storey extended galley. I believe they are entering from the roof. Next door is a poorly maintained rental property and the tenants/previous tenants have a huge pile of junk in their yard resting against the shared wall (our kitchen wall), which is possibly attracting rag, who could be climbing up into our property from that junk or a drain pipe? I don't really know the neighbours properly, so not sure how they would feel if we told them to clear their mess and let us access their backyard to assess our kitchen roof from that side. We bought our property under a year ago and spent thousands doing it up. But this rat problem is driving me mad Sad I can't afford another pest control call out. Don't want to remove the kitchen celing either as that will cause a lot of mess and headache. I give birth soon and feeling stressed. Any advice? Anyone been through similar?

Contact your local council's environmental health office and let them know about the problem. They will contact your neighbours and tell them to clear up the mess. They won't say who has made a complaint to them. Good luck.

We have loads of rats where I live (I think the proximity of 3 big stables and the number of people keeping chickens in their gardens may have something to do with it).

We've twice had them in the house (a semi), both times they got in where small sections of mortar had come away from the brickwork. They can get through surprisingly tiny gaps and are very good climbers, and you're could be right about them getting in via the kitchen roof.

Get some ladders and have a good look at the roof, the guttering, where the roofing felt tucks under the soffit, any points where pipes are attached etc. Do the same all around the kitchen wall. Sometimes, you can see a sort of grubby mark that builds up where they keep coming and going (they have very oily coats, apparently). If you can identify and block the access points, that should stop them getting in.

The other possibility is that they are getting into next door, and coming along the wall cavity into your property. If this is the case, you will have to get the council involved as the owner of the adjoining property will have to remedy that.

I'd also recommend that you check the pipes under your sink and to the washing machine for signs of having been gnawed. Last time we had them in the house, I woke in the night to a loud hissing sound. When I went downstairs to see wtf was going on, I found a fountain spouting away under the sink and the kitchen ankle deep in water.

The fuckers had gnawed through the plastic hose that takes water to the diswasher and it was gushing away like Old Faithful.

Afterthought: as you're in a terraced house, it might be an idea to inspect the roof space, too, in case they're coming in that way.

Try one of those sonic plug in things
We got one when we heard scratching noise, no droppings or anything but there was something there we could hear it
We just leave it on all the time no and there's no problem

Another afterthought: if you know anyone who has a terrier, the dog will tell you where the rats are getting in. Let the terrier loose, it will sniff around, get excited, and fixate on the spot that smells most of rats.

This was how we knew we had rats the first time, my lakeland terrier was trying to dig up the kitchen floor!

We seem to have a rat problem too at the moment. I saw one in the garden a few weeks ago. Then this week I am starting to see more and more cats in my garden loitering. Pretty sure I have a nest near my shed!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I've heard a lot about those sonic plug ins, I will look into that. Local council is utterly useless in getting rubbish removed in public areas never mind private land. I will give them a ring though if tenant/LL dig their heels.

@LakieLady that's awful about them causing flooding in your kitchen! I did suspect they may be coming in from next doors cavity wall again. But the pest control guy blocked all the holes on his last visit. My DH took up the floorboards from that same bedroom and everything is in order there. I had him also check the kitchen and bathroom pipework from our yard and nothing seemingly suspicious. I do think you're right, I need him to get a ladder and access next door's yard to check our roof from that side. It could be a small hole in the felt or a broken tile which the buggers are using to get in. Worried about all the electrics

@roses2 I'd check inside the shed too. We have recently demolished a small outbuilding because it was infested. It was leaky and horrible, not worth keeping. The amount of rat poo that we found in there bleurgh.

Try buying rodilon online. It kills pretty quick compared to other stuff.

TARSCOUT · 05/07/2020 00:23

Because restaurants etc closed rats have been being braver and venturing further for food. I have seen 3 in last 2 days. Check under kickboards in kitchen. This was where ours were coming in. Check under decking as well.

I've stopped feeding birds because of seeing them in our garden. Shame as i loved feeding birds.
