To feel like the worst mother today

Today has just been awful and I need to say it out loud - I feel like a terrible mum.

8 month old DD fell off the bed today. She has very suddenly become mobile and is super speedy. She hit the carpet with a thud and she bumped her head too (side of forehead). Cried immediately for about a minute and then settled down, absolutely no marks/bumps/bruises, just calm and content, her usual self. Doctors said to watch for vomiting, drowsiness and unusual irritability, none of which she has, and everyone is satisfied that she is fine....but how do I know for sure? I've checked on her twice already tonight and feel I won't be sleeping at all.

Fast forward 90 minutes and DS 8 went to play on his bike out the front, suddenly started screaming. He has crashed face first into a metal fence, blood everywhere. Get him inside where he has split his lip at the bottom and punctured it as well with his teeth, and also looks like he has damaged his front teeth. Trip to A&E with him for stitches and a brace for his teeth (and instructions to get an xray in case he has further damage and needs a root canal), got him home calm, dosed up and tucked up in bed around 9:30pm.

DH is asleep and I am wired, can't stop googling both kid's problems and wondering if I should check on them both overnight, if I should have taken DD to A&E as well, wishing I'd made different choices today and these accidents wouldn't have happened.....

I just really need to offload, having a real wobble about my parenting when both children have had accidents today! Has anyone experienced either of these accidents and it's been fine? Or can anyone help me stop freaking out so much? Please?

Just unfortunate the 2 things happened on the same day, baby is fine you know what to do and look out for if she’s being sick or hard to rouse and your son has had Medical care unfortunately just part of being a child and being on a bike.

I have 4 sons and I’m a paeds nurse so I’ve seen a lot of accidents and my own have had a few, dont best yourself up, take care of yourself

DS is enjoying jelly and milkshakes and says he is feeling okay (although says his lip looks gross which it really does!) And DD is fine this morning so I'm satisfied that she has survived with no injury at all, thank goodness.

I can't express how helpful it is to know that I'm not alone - logically I know, but emotionally I felt like the worst person in the world yesterday. Onwards and upwards now (and maybe a small gin later)

Welcome to motherhood! If you don’t feel like the worse mother in the world at least once a week you’re not doing it properly Grin.
I felt like this all the time but somehow my children have managed to grow up ok.
Just look after yourself op and try not to stress.

Both babies have fallen off the bed, both fine. My youngest had carpet burn on his nose at 1 MIL didn't catch him in time.

My oh had an accident like your DS as a kid, his whole jaw basically hung off, they fixed him up and you can't tell he had such an accident

If it makes you feel any better. My dad dropped me down the stairs when I was about 18 months. He said I bounced pretty well, and wasn't obviously any worse for wear. :)

Then when I about 2, I was in the buggy at the top of a hill, but mum forgot to put the brake on as she admired the view. The buggy rolled all the way down the hill, and face-planted me into a thorn bush.

Luckily I was too young to remember either of these events.

A few weeks ago DS rolled off the bed... as I span round to grab him, I completely slipped over on the floor and took DD (toddler) out too! We were all there in a pile sobbing, but all fine now!

DH balanced DS on the foam changing mat on top of the toilet seat when he was 10 weeks old, and unsurprisingly he fell straight off onto a hard tiled floor (I blame sleep deprivation, DH isn’t usually that stupid). Both were hysterical, but no damage done.

DS also managed to wriggle past DH’s leg and dive headfirst down the stairs when he was about 14mo - we were about to set off on holiday and DH had a suitcase in each hand so couldn’t grab him in time. I heard every bounce of his head on the stairs. Luckily only the half landing (5 steps). Huge egg on his forehead for about a week. But again no lasting effects.

Totally not a terrible Mum! These things happen sometimes and accidents are things we just can’t control unfortunately.

I fell off the bed at 6 months old while in my Grandmother’s care and I turned out fine! I think I did anyway Grin but seriously, things like this happen often but I get your guilt! We never want to see our little ones in pain.

Try your best to have a good night’s sleep and it’ll all be forgotten about tomorrow Smile

I’ve had the baby rolling off the ged thing.

I accidentally elbowed my son in the mouth and chipped his (adult) tooth.

Bed not ged

Sugarhouse · 05/07/2020 00:54

Oh gosh op these things have happened to us all it makes you feel terrible but it doesn’t make you a bad mum. I’m sure they will both be fine bless them. Try not to beat yourself up over it accidents happen and we can’t prevent them all
