Am I wrong to believe that not everyone visiting a pub this weekend will end up in A&E?

We've reserved our usual table for Sunday in one of the pubs we choose to visit because our dog, who's a rescue dog and scared of people, can hide. I'm nervous about it, but want to get some sort of normal back. If it works out, we'll have a couple of drinks and lunch, and all will be good. We've not been there since February. The idea that everybody visiting a pub tomorrow is only going there to get drunk is stupid. Pubs/bars have long had regulations in place where they're not allowed to serve people who seem to be drunk.

The majority of people wont. A small minority will act like idiots and get blind drunk and start a fight... like they do on any other saturday. Of course the media will blow this out of proportion and start speculating multiple lockdowns and second spikes galore...

Sparklesocks · 03/07/2020 23:11

Of course not everyone will. I don’t think anyone believes that. But chances are there will be a minority who get carried away and possibly get into a fight, or stand on a table and fall off etc. It happens in ‘normal’ time at weekends so I think it’s inevitable to happy on ‘super Saturday’ too. Even if there are time restrictions they might drink before they hit the pub, or after.

My friend is opening her bar back up tomorrow. I’m driving so won’t be drinking alcohol but going along to support her. This has been dreadful business for the hospitality trade.

Smelborp · 03/07/2020 23:14

Of course the majority won’t end up in A&E. However, some will.

People will probably stand too close to each other. Emotions may run high due to anxiety about being around other people or being out for the first time in months.

Some people may have Coronavirus and pass it on more than they would have in lockdown. It won’t be at numbers that will statistically be seen in the next week or even two, but once those newly infected go on to infect others, you might start to see a new increase in a month or so.

This isn’t something that has an effect in the very short term.

healththrowawayx · 03/07/2020 23:16

I don’t think you should go if your dog’s going to be scared, there will certainly be a decent amount of people around.

UltimateWednesday · 03/07/2020 23:16

The press will make it look like it's been carnage. The reality will be that most people will have been for a friendly drink/meal and that some of the usually more lively pubs will have had a bit of bother.

ShinyRuby · 03/07/2020 23:18

My dd works at a pub/restaurant. There are so many rules & regulations in place, you have to book a table, it's for 90 minutes & you aren't allowed to go up to the bar, everything is ordered on an app. So I really don't think there'll be any hoards of drunks around!
I've booked a table in a city centre pub for lunch with a friend in the week, again bookings only & table for 90 minutes. Contact details taken as well. I'm expecting it to all be a bit strange but if that's what we need to do then fine.
There's bound to be a few incidents of drunken behaviour but I think it's probably easier to get wrecked down on the park with your own booze than it will be in a pub!

Yes I’m expecting drunken snaps on Sunday morning in the media. Like what they did on ladies day at the races
BigBadVoodooHat · 03/07/2020 23:23

The idea that everybody visiting a pub tomorrow is only going there to get drunk is stupid.

Nobody believes that every single person going to a pub tomorrow is going there to get hammered or that every single one of them will end up in hospital.

So no, of course you’re not wrong to believe that not everyone who visits a pub tomorrow will end up in A&E. Confused

KaTetof19 · 03/07/2020 23:24

YANBU but maybe a small number of those who are normally bad drunks might listen and reign it in tomorrow.

I doubt it though, the minority who are badly behaved when drinking will be unbearable tomorrow. It'll be our turn on 13th July so I'll be watching to see how it all pans put. My sister is dreading her first few days back in behind the bar.

I'm not convinced that the social distancing measure will enocourage people to get inebriated.

People on a mission to pickle their livers and get raucous will probably find more pleasure in the DIY methods they've made do with for months.

I'm sure the majority of it will be disappiintingly civilised.

Anyone up for betting which city is going to get shamed by the media?
The Brummies?
The Scousers?
The Mancunians?

So many opportunities for righteous scorn not seen since Midlanders had the audacity to flock to the beach on a hot day...

Evelefteden · 03/07/2020 23:35

I think there will be more people in the streets tbh trying to get pubs

The Manchester lot (my old stomping ground)
PeppersYellow · 03/07/2020 23:43

Prob not a n 'e but some may end up in icu if some get drunk and forget to social distance. The name Super Saturday has been suggested by some to be changed to Stupid Saturday can't think why or what is expected then...

SwelteringInTheHeat · 03/07/2020 23:45

Of course most people will just go for lunch or a couple of drinks. Just like on New Years Eve, most people will control themselves and go home, but you will have a minority of idiots.

Most people I know won't be going near a pub or bar for a few weeks yet.

notangelinajolie · 03/07/2020 23:50

Most people won't end up in a&e. In fact most people won't be going out. A few may catch Corona and a few may pass it on but at the end of the day we all have to be careful and I think most people will be.
We can't hide forever - do whatever you think is best.

Purplephonecover · 04/07/2020 00:21

I have friends working in A&E, one in north wales and another in London. They are preparing for admissions like New Year’s Eve. I hope that this doesn’t happen but suspect that it will. Please reign it in people. Parents of teens, please keep them home.

All police leave is cancelled.

If your dog is so scared of people he needs to hide please don't take him to the pub. He does not like it. It's harmful and of no benefit to him.

Pubs aren't open in Wales!
TARSCOUT · 04/07/2020 01:08

YABU taking a scared dog to a pub. I am one year on with my rescue and this is still unthinkable.

PyongyangKipperbang · 04/07/2020 02:06

Pubs/bars have long had regulations in place where they're not allowed to serve people who seem to be drunk.

You do realise that that law prevents me serving you a second drink if I served you the first one because I know you to be affected by alcohol? Of course no one would do that, but if you follow the law to the letter, thats what we would have to do.

And how do you judge it?
A person who can nail a bottle of whisky by lunchtime can drink 10 pints and be unaffected but a person who only drinks at Xmas can be all over the place after 2. Who should I refuse to serve? Would you like to be the person who says no to either of them?! The 10 pinter could be happy and peaceful and go home all happy and the 2 pinter could smack the waitress. While you get a hunch for the obvious ones, sometimes you really cant tell who will kick off. I have seen a stone cold sober person attack someone in a stomach churning way, turned out he was a steroid abusing weight lifter who hadnt touched a drop in years.....

somm · 04/07/2020 22:46

Okay, now i'm feeling bad about my dog. I should explain, it's not really about him hiding - it's about him having a quiet spot, whilst trying to get him used to people after a very long life lived in kennels. There are only a couple of pubs we take him to, and it's for that reason. As our fourth rescue we've learned along the way with each dog what works for them, and hopefully how we can enhance their life.

I hate to think I'm making life worse for my dogs.

Also, we've had him since April last year, so we've learned a lot about his character over the months. He was eight when we got him and, with his background and character, I think he may well have ended his days in the greyhound sanctury he ended up in. He's not a pet, he's an idiot, but he's loved here.
