Is this still how we talk/educate girls?

DD is not quite at puberty stage , but definitely on the way there. We talk about it quite a lot(and we have talked about bodies, periods etc since she was little) but I thought I'd get some books too that we can either read together or she can read by herself.

Luckily I read through them before giving them to her.

One of them in particular is focused on looks, repeated gorgeous, fabulous ,babe comments, matching knickers and how jeans will fit much better once you grow.

They call breasts boobs, who knows why.

AIBU that 9yos (the age they claim most girls start puberty) don't and shouldn't care about matching knickers, skin care routines or how their jeans are filled.

YANBU.

The word “boobs” is awful just for starters.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 03/07/2020 20:21

Two more.

I gave up after these pages. Even there is other information that is good/useful, I don't want my daughter to start getting these messages already.

Bladeofgrass · 03/07/2020 20:21

What a load of bollocks! Why do boys get to be 'confident' and girls 'attractive'
And that's just for starters, they whole thing is shite and should never be given to any child/teenager.

rosiejaune · 03/07/2020 20:22

YANBU. Try the Robie Harris books (different ones for different ages).

AbsentmindedWoman · 03/07/2020 20:26

Ugh. Reading that made me uncomfortable. Seems very dated, as well.

It's a misguided chatty attempt at trying to reassure girls they're not fat when starting to develop, I think, but it's just done all wrong.

Backbackandforth · 03/07/2020 20:39

“They can turn the plainest girl into an attractive young woman” 🤢

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 03/07/2020 20:42

Burn that shit. Who wrote that!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 03/07/2020 20:44

Could you helpfully name the book and author op?

Wow..... what a message to give young girls 🙄 I really thought we had moved past this ...

Igotthemheavyboobs · 03/07/2020 20:48

Yanbu! And boobs Hmm

Everyone knows the most appropriate name for them is titties!

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 03/07/2020 20:48

Which book is that? I want to get one for DD. Not that one though...

IAmMeThisIsI · 03/07/2020 20:49

Haha! Who has written this load of shite? Wonder if they discuss vagazzling on the back page!

bluesapphirestars · 03/07/2020 20:50

Ugh, that is awful. Trying to be generous, I suppose they are trying to encourage pride in their emerging sexuality rather than embarrassment but it does miss the mark!

Mrsjayy · 03/07/2020 20:51

Good god turns the plainest girl... what book is this?

DorothyWasRightTho · 03/07/2020 20:51

Envy ohh no!
It might be a little old for her right now but I highly recommend Girl Up by Laura Bates, covers all sorts of topics in a no nonsense and funny way

Grim. You need to tell us what book though, so we all know which one to avoid.

Brieminewine · 03/07/2020 20:53

Where you got them from?! The 1974 library archives?!

HoneysuckIejasmine · 03/07/2020 20:53

Gross.

minipie · 03/07/2020 20:53

This is awful.

I've just told my 8 year old daughter this information, thankyou babe! She took it very well as she is rather mature. Xxx[/quote]
Ah good, glad to be passing on all my wisdom to the younger generations.
