Should I buy cheap glasses?

Okay, first world problems but I had some beautiful Laura Ashley champagne flutes for years. A friend came over last year and broke one.

Accidents happen, so I didn’t think anything of it and used it as an excuse to buy some pretty LSA flutes.

We had drinks in the garden a few weeks ago and after a few drinks she broke one of those too! Now I have 2 sets of 3 glasses and I can’t find anywhere to buy singular ones.
I thought about buying some cheap ones to give her but I’d feel a bit crap giving my other friends the nice glasses and handing her a £1 one. I could give everyone cheap glasses but then I’d barely ever get to use the pretty ones and I like them!

So more of a what would you do?

I'm a glass breaker I'm afraid. I would always and only buy cheap ones in the knowledge that they'll only ever be temporary 😉

Build an "eclectic" collection of mismatched naice glasses. You can often pick them up in charity shops for very little.

I was going to say I bought cheap glasses and I've been wearing them for years - but that's the wrong sort of glasses!

Pelleas · 02/07/2020 17:35

I thought this was going to be about spectacles!

I wouldn't notice whether a glass someone gave me was cheap or expensive, so I'd buy the cheap ones every time.

A tip - they often have incomplete sets or odd glasses going for a song in charity shops so it's worth looking to see if there is a match (or near match) for any sets you have broken

RedSheep73 · 02/07/2020 17:35

Oh no, you need to get good ones for your eyes, much more important!

Pelleas · 02/07/2020 17:35

x-posted with the last two posters saying more or less the same thing!

DatingDisasters · 02/07/2020 17:36

@NetballHoop Actually I quite like that idea. But then I’ll feel obliged to get her round to break some more (and that will be painful to watch) to make space for my new interesting ones.

I probably should have specified what type of glasses I meant in the title, but perhaps I need to consider some cheap eye glasses for my friend when she comes round. That might be a fix.

If I were glass breaking friend I'd feel relieved to be given the cheaper ones. I'd keep the expensive ones for myself and get some mid-range ones for socialising when a few drinks are likely to be consumed.

I have not cheap but not too expensive very lovely habitat stemless glasses. I dont have any stemmed glasses anymore. It's te way forward.

DatingDisasters · 02/07/2020 17:52

Can you get nice stemless champagne flutes? I have some lovely stemless wine glasses I picked up in a sale from Anthropologie but naturally, a different friend managed to break one of those Sad - so nothing seems to help!

Maybe I should change my friends rather than my glasses. Grin
