To think UK hols are unappealing this year?

Had booked (pre COVID) a self catering holiday in the UK in August. Just had notification from the owners that all soft furnishings and extras have been removed and we are to take our own bedding, including duvets. Later check in and earlier check out too. Completely understand why the owners have done this, not their fault. But my holiday is not the lovely holiday I had booked. We have decided to cancel and lose our deposit. Just feel a bit sorry for myself as we had to cancel our overseas holiday in May. Worried for the UK tourism industry as to me that is just not appealing. Would rather stay at home.

Booked my UK holiday yesterday. TBH I think the above is a small price to pay to be able to get away for a week, go on different walks and spend some family time together. We’ve been WFH, so home doesn’t always feel like “home” at the moment.

AnnieMaul · 02/07/2020 17:32

As you say it's understandable, but the additional precautions don't really make going away very appealing at the moment. It's become more of a change of scenery than a holiday in a lot of cases it seems.

I don't blame you for cancelling if you're having to lug all your own bedding and then bring back all that extra washing, no comforts.

Out of interest, were they offering a reduction in price for the reduction in services/facilities?

I think uk holidays are unappealing most of the time. I really don't see that taking some bedding makes that much difference to a holiday really.

I sympathise with this. There’s a gorgeous self-catering place that DP and I go to occasionally and the whole reason we love it is all the little extras like the board games, dressing gowns etc.

We did consider booking but we’re not people who go out walking in the rain so if the weather is bad we’d spend it inside watching TV which is exactly what we’ve spent the last 3 months doing at home!

We’ll save our money and hold out for hopefully being able to get abroad. Price is also a factor and when we can do 4 nights in Barcelona in the middle of August including bags, H10 hotel with BA holidays for £250 each it just doesn’t make sense to pay so much to stay in the Uk

For me, it's the reactions of the locals which will prevent us going anywhere in the UK this year.

OneForMeToo · 02/07/2020 17:38

I can’t wait to be honest and the more people who are put off will selfishly make it quieter for me. I really feel for those who have booked caravan parks at £1,000’s due to facilities which will now be closed and are not getting any type of discount id be fuming as there are huge price differences between just accommodation and a bustling site.

We camp though so it’s all our own stuff and used to lugging our own bedding around.

OP, your not alone. TBH no holidays look appealing anywhere this year, and I could quite honestly do with less time with the DC and DH! Our 20th wedding anniversary trip to Iceland was cancelled in April, we couldnt go in our May half term camping trip and our week of SC in Scotland has been cancelled; this was offered and we took it due to uncertainty regarding the Scottish border (we live in England).

I am totally fed up and exhausted. Been WFH in the corner of my living room, on rubbish Wi-fi, with bored dc. All my work has been deemed nationally critical (Defra), yet progress is so slow I can not see how I am ever going to have any time off again!

I wouldnt be too bothered about taking my own bedding, I would probably take sleeping bags to save on space. However I would want to know what they mean by "all soft furnishings and extras". Will there be a sofa? Curtains? Kitchen equipment? TV remote? It all seems a bit extreme.

Incidentally I looked at booking a holiday cottage and the changes were

  • hand sanitizer next to books and dvds so you could use it if you wanted to watch/read them.
  • you were asked to put all duvet covers, towels etc in a laundry bag when you leave
  • extra cleaning materials provided
  • load dishwasher before departure.
  • open windows in departure

I don't go on holiday for a few cushions and a throw. I'm really pleased we booked somewhere and am excited to have all the children and their partners all together for a few days of dog walking, swimming, nice meals and birthday cake.

boredorboard · 02/07/2020 18:03

No, no discount offered.

I'm not really the sort of person who enjoys camping type holidays with sleeping bags although I appreciate many love that.

To me a holiday is a luxurious experience and I am happy to pay the going rate for that sort of holiday. I had already thought I would take our own bed pillows but not all bedding and towels. For me that is a step too far.

Luckily I live in a beautiful part of England so will have a home based holiday this year.

A UK holiday has never been more appealing to me. Months of the same scenery has made me desperate for a break.

Covid has meant I've worked long hours so I intend to walk, swim, cycle and have much needed quality family time.

Soft furnishings, organised entertainment and making new friends isn't top of my list.
