I genuinely hate it with a passion, honestly it's ridiculous.

When I was a child, my mum ironed everything, even teatowels. The ironing board was always up with iron in situ and it was treated like a dangerous animal - she was always screaming at me if I went near it. When I was about 11,she threw a fit over being the only person in the house that did any ironing, so she tried to show me how. I still have no idea what I did wrong, but she went absolutely INSANE with rage at me, and two things happened, she decided I could never again be trusted with the iron, and I swore I'd never do it again!

Since then, I've made do with line drying, making sure things are always folded or hung up immediately, and anything that gets particularly crumpled doesn't last long in our wardrobes.

The problem is, within a year the DC are going to be wearing new uniform/starting new activities which are going to require clothes being ironed, and I'm starting back to a job which has a smart dress code. I know you can get those no iron shirts, but only in limited colours so it's not going to work.

I'm going to have to buy a bloody iron and ironing board and I'm actually dreading it. I've no idea where to start or what to do, I don't even know where to store the bloody thing in our tiny house, and I am absolutely resentful of the hours and hours I'm going to waste ironing.

We did actually have an iron in our student house, I used to pay my housemates to do mine Grinbut despite being very clean and tidy students, it got weird brown marks inside of it which came out onto the clothes and ruined them, wtf?

Is there anything I can do to make this easier? Any particular type of iron or board? Or anything that makes it faster?

I used to work with a number of younger people who were very proud of never ironing, they honestly believed it didn't show! Even 'non-iron' clothes look shabby, technically everything is non-iron I suppose.

RedPanda2 · 02/07/2020 10:39

Never ironed, another vote here for hanging shirts in the bathroom to steam them. My clothes don't seem to come out of the washer crumply though.

GrumpyHoonMain · 02/07/2020 10:40

I had a similar upbringing. Mum used to get so angry I not only never ironed I also made sure my clothes weren’t in her ironing pile as it invariable resulted in a beating sometimes. I now have an iron that doubles as a clothes steamer.

BusyProcrastinator · 02/07/2020 10:42

I don’t iron. I have a professional job.

I hang shirts on coat hangers to dry. Wear nice jewellery as a distraction/dressing up marker. Mainly I wear dresses that don’t need ironing.

IwishIhadaMargarita · 02/07/2020 10:47

I haven’t ironed in two years. I detest it and I have better things to be doing. Do you look at people and notice of their clothes are ironed or not? I don’t so people are probably not looking for creases on me. If something really needed it I would get the iron out!i suppose.

My mum ironed everything and still does And used to iron everything before packing it for holiday and take a travel iron too. It’s again something I could not be bothered with.

Same, mine never come out crumpled and if hung right then what's the issue? DH works away a lot and has a travel steamer which he uses for work shirts which can get crumpled in suitcase.

Even if someone noticed a couple of lines or something in a top of mine, I really couldn't care and if they did then that that's their issue, I'm not standing there on a Sunday evening ironing everything for the sake of it. Life's too short.

Ginfordinner · 02/07/2020 10:48

Can someone let me know which are these magical washing machines that produce crease free clothes. Tumble drying, line drying, hanging on hangers still doesn't produce crease free clothes for me. To be fair, I do wear a lot of cotton, and I really dislike the look of creased clothes, so maybe I am fussy.

britnay · 02/07/2020 10:51

I don't iron. Shirts are hung on coat hangers straight out the wash. If someone wants something ironed then they can do it themselves.

Potionqueen · 02/07/2020 10:51

Decent ironing board and steam generator iron. Honestly cuts ironing time in half.

BlackeyedSusan · 02/07/2020 10:53

when we separated, ex got custody of the iron.

aafter a few months I thought I really ought to buy one just in case. Well I have lost it. It is somewhere in the flat put away at the back of some cupboard or other. (a decade on)

I have nbought another, only because we got a moth in that ate my woolies, so now I iron them before putting away to hopefully fry any wildlife.

When I went to a fubneral I travelled so ireoned there.

loubeylou68smellsofreindeerpoo · 02/07/2020 10:57

Weirdo here GrinI love ironing

Rainallnight · 02/07/2020 11:01

I don’t iron either. DD starts school in Sept and I’ve had the same thoughts as you. And I read that interview with Angela Rayner who said her mum was neglectful and never ironed anything so she always looked a state. That made me a bit Blush

trappedsincesundaymorn · 02/07/2020 11:01

I haven't ironed anything in 20 years. Exh was a military person (RN), he always did the ironing as he would constantly tell me I was doing it wrong...one of the many reasons he became an exh. Since our divorce I haven't touched an iron and it will be a cold day in Hell before I will again.

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 02/07/2020 11:02

I am a fairly senior civil servant. Always in bloody meetings with various other department heads. Have just been promoted so can't imagine I am that badly turned out ... yet I probably ironed 4 items last year. It's just not a necessary activity.

I have also had 3 kids go through nursery , primary and secondary without a single need for an iron. Again - not known for their scruffy appearance . In fact eldest DD was chosen as deputy head girl.

Why waste your time. ? Keep an iron for emergencies by all means.. but regular ironing, no way. The only exception I make is sheets. I love ironed sheets so I send them out to be done every three months.

TwoBlueFish · 02/07/2020 11:05

Life’s too short for ironing. My kids are 16 & 17, I think I’ve ironed their school shirts once. I just buy the easy care no iron ones and hang them up straight away. I very occasionally iron something for me if it’s a special event but I’m pretty bad at at. My husband used to iron everything before we met, he now doesn’t iron anything either.

My friend taught her kids how to iron when they started high school, it was then up to them if they wanted to iron their uniform or not.

MrsT1405 · 02/07/2020 11:12

I dont like ironing, but it's not that much of a chore. I've got a huge steam iron tning, put the telly on and dash it through. I do mostly mine. Dh mostly his , but not that bothered either way. I dont bother too much about the backs of stuff or being too sharp but it looks a lot better. I iron tea towels to sterilize them for drying stuff or using in emgencies. I'm sorry but un ironed stuff looks scruffy....yes you can tell. Ds used to do his collors with his hair straighteners and wear a jumper.

GeneParmesanPrivateEye · 02/07/2020 11:18

I don't mind it. Ironing board takes a couple of seconds to put up, once a week - I get a brew and a boxset and it's pretty painless to be honest!

I don't do stuff like bedding or whatever, just the essentials.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/07/2020 11:18

I don’t mind ironing. We have a sort of alcove by the kitchen window, and the board is just up there, unless we have guests. I listen to the radio and watch the birds in the back garden.

I don’t do bedlinen, dish towels, underwear or anything like that, but pretty much everything else gets done.

HaudMaDug · 02/07/2020 11:35

I've no idea where my iron is nowadays. I've hung my shirts on a coat hanger straight out of the washing machine to hang on the line then steam in the bathroom while I'm in the shower smooth out creases.

My ironing board however has been a god send as I've used it a standing desk for years now. Great for working in front of the fire in winter. Wink

mogtheexcellent · 02/07/2020 11:39

I dry most clothes on hangers so no need to iron. I dont even own an iron.

Mind you I live in Jean's and tshirts as does DH. Dds uniform is non iron and does not crease. If I had to wear shirts etc I would outsource. My smart clothes I wear for weddings are dry cleaned.

SimonJT · 02/07/2020 11:46

I wear quite a bit of cotton as well.

Everything here is tumbled until a little damp, then hung on hangers straight away. If I get it out and hang it creases are rare, if I leave it just a few minutes clothes are fairly creased. I have a utility room so it can be hung in there without getting in the way.

No idea if my machines make a difference, my washing machine and tumble drier are both miele.

Greydrapex · 02/07/2020 11:48

My daughter school skirt is pleated. I’ve no idea why the school chose it as less than half of the girls have ironed skirts and the look awful.

I’m also iron everything. I don’t like it though! I’ve got a big steam generator iron which makes it 100% easier. I could never go back to a regular steam or iron. I put a good film an Netflix which also helps 1

MatildaTheCat · 02/07/2020 12:02

If you live in a hard water area ironing water is a good idea but buy cheap as it goes pretty quickly.

I don’t mind ironing most things but not a fan of formal shirts so those go to the cleaners for wash and iron. When DC were at school I bought short sleeved shirts which got much less dirty and if taken off overhead can be ironed like a t shirt which takes literally seconds.

I’m always surprised by people taking hours over it, I must be quick. I also love ironed bedding so am ace at folding it really tightly with DH and ironing whilst folded. It’s super king so a total pain if not done this way.

I listen to the radio and have no issue with it but can leave it all set up which probably makes a difference. Try to adjust your feelings to it, you presumably clean the loo and do far worse jobs all the time. Smile

RhodaDendron · 02/07/2020 12:39

I have a smart wardrobe comprised entirely of things that don’t need ironing. Lots of shell T-shirts and stretch trousers, blazers, formal dresses. Occasionally I accidentally buy something that needs ironing and it’s quickly consigned to history.

My dad did all the ironing growing up and DH is gutted I won’t do ours!

yelyah22 · 02/07/2020 12:44

Haven't ironed anything in years, except for a funeral! My partner has a steamer thing for his work shirts that works well though.
