Parking - to be totally fed up with this situation

I really know this is a small matter in the grander scheme of things - but it is really stressing me out - appreciate any advice/guidance but don't want to lower myself to their levels!

I live on a road about a mile from town that is not resident controlled parking (although some other roads in the area are). I have a drive but the road outside is quite narrow and used by a set of flats maisonettes next door who have garages but no off street parking.

Every Weekday a van pulls up and parks at the end of my drive and waits while his mates (up to 5 a day) turn up and park - they then all pile into the van and head off for work returning 10 hours later. They park right up to the end of my drive on both sides and all down the street blocking it for all in terms of visitors deliveries and hampering my visibility in leaving the drive.

I have tried polite notices asking them not to do this and even a stern notice telling them not to do this and that I would involve the authorities if this continued - the leaflets are shredded and thrown around the street

I have spoken to the council who said that although it might be unreasonable to the residents to create a "Park and Ride" as they termed it in our street they are perfectly entitled to do so and that we should just put up with it.

While it may not be technically illegal (which I am currently checking) but it is clearly unfair and detrimental to residents -none of the Park and riders are local and probably don't come from the same town.

Other than get over it - which I may well have to do - any advice or simialr experiences sensibly resolved appreciat

could you see citizen's advice bureau? they would be able to help with legal aspects.

fransmom · 26/09/2007 19:23

and it's FREE

fireflyfairy2 · 26/09/2007 19:26

Traffic cones?

flowerybeanbag · 26/09/2007 19:28

VV annoying but I can't see there's anything you can do about it really, if they are parking legally, i.e. not on double yellows or whatever. The council would probably applaud something like this as a green initiative, saving emissions and cutting down on congestion.

No comfort for you of course.

southeastastra · 26/09/2007 19:30

you could ask the council for controlled parking, that's a pain but it would stop them.

bogwobbit · 26/09/2007 19:32

Are they blocking you from entering or exiting your driveway?
Are they parked illegally in any way - yellow lines / on the pavement or whatever?
Is it a private road?
If the answer to all of the above is no then I'm afraid they're entitled to park on a public road (providing they have valid tax discs) no matter how annoying or inconvenient it is to you.
Think you may just have t o lump it.

cluelessnchaos · 26/09/2007 19:37

I think your best bet is to be nice to them, so when you have a dleivery due or friends coming you could ask them on those days to leave a space

sazzybee · 26/09/2007 19:40

It's a public road so there's no reason they can't do that, however annoying it might be to you. I live near a tube station and my street (until we got res park) was full of people parking and getting the tube. If I were you, I'd lobby your neighbours to hassle the council to make your street res park.

That's the only suggestion I have other than get over it

MaureenMLove · 26/09/2007 19:41

I agree really, being nice might be the best option. Although, could you try parking your car at the end of your drive for a few days? They might get the message!

whiskeyandbeer · 26/09/2007 21:06

yep you are being unreasonable. it's a public road and provided they are doing nothing illegal they are entitled to park there just as much as anyone else.

ChantillyLace · 26/09/2007 21:18

Agree with the others I'm afraid, there's nothing you can do though the suggestion of parking in the road yourself is an option.

We had the same problem in our road with students but the road is so narrow the council have now put double yellows along the whole road.
