I've news that I can't really discuss with anyone

I was referred for psychotherapy a couple of weeks after a very difficult conference call with my keyworker, care coordinator and psychiatrist where I had to call on all my strength to advocate for myself.

Today I found out that they will take me. The waiting list is 12 months but now in my early 40's, it's 30 years overdue. What the psychiatrist has referred me for is trauma therapy and has queried (not diagnosed) PTSD (along with a few other diagnoses).

I just wanted to tell someone, that I'm so happy to finally get this opportunity to maybe address my issues. My life has been one fuck up after another.

I can't really discuss it with family as the trauma relates to my family. So that's that really. Just wanted to tell someone. Smile

I just want to be normal - whatever that is (not me lol).
I'll give it my all, that's all I can do. All I could ever do.
The trauma has affected my life in so many horrible ways, that I couldn't even begin to recount them.
Hopefully I hit it off with therapist too.

Meant to add: it's lovely to hear some good news for once! :)

gavisconismyfriend · 02/07/2020 01:47

That’s great! I waited a year for similar, but it was so worth it. Life changing. So pleased for you.

justilou1 · 02/07/2020 03:12

Great news! I want to give you even more encouragement by letting you know that I’m about a year ahead of you with this process. (Abusive childhood and sexual assault as a teenager)... I have had years of psychiatric and psychological “talk” therapy, which helped up to a point, but chose to do EMDR therapy to face up to my C-PTSD and embrace a normal life. It’s made an enormous difference, and you can be very proud of yourself for choosing to make this very brave step!!! (BTW, am 48 now, so similar time-frame!)

Nancydrawn · 02/07/2020 03:38

That's fabulous, OP. Congrats--and well done!

FFSFFSFFS · 02/07/2020 03:59

Excellent news.

If you wanted to - you could do some reading the meantime. I recommend Pete Walker's book on Complex PTSD as a good insight.

Sunnytimesahead · 02/07/2020 04:06

Hi OP,

That's wonderful news, I really hope this is the start of a great new chapter in your life. You deserve much happiness. Best of luck with the therapy.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 02/07/2020 04:17

Sincerely hoping that the therapy gives you the tools you need to eat with your trauma. Congratulations.

How funny, I was going to recommend that as well. It's such a good introduction to the idea that there's nothing wrong with you, and how C-PTSD impacts you across all parts of your life, but how you can heal and grow.

Also Homecoming by John Bradshaw, Will I ever be good enough? by Karyl McBride and Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Lindsey Gibson are all really good books, which will give you some insight into how you can heal with help and support.

EFT tapping, which you can learn from YouTube is also a good way to help you regulate your emotions. There are tons of videos for how to heal from trauma.

So pleased for you OP. You have amazing strength to fight for this. Good luck Flowers?

sazza76 · 02/07/2020 06:37

Really pleased for you OP. Well done on advocating for yourself, I speak from experience in saying I know just how hard that can be. I agree with others who say that its likely to be a bumpy ride, but it really can change your life. Good luck

Fabulous news, it will be hard some days and other days you will leave feeling 10lbs lighter. Therapy is the best thing I ever did and it allows you to really reflect on your current and past relationships and evaluate if they are suiting you.

Best of luck with it my dear, I hope you find relief and comfort ❤

Thedogscollar · 02/07/2020 08:15

Lovely post. Good luck with your therapy I hope you can find your resolution and some peace. Flowers
